Comes a time in life when........

Grey toilet - Grey toilet and grey seat!!

One needs a new toilet seat . Sounds easy does it. You go to the store and buy one. Well NOPE, not that easy it seems since I needed a grey one.....yes a GREY one!! Sounded like I was looking for something out of the ordinary when I went shopping. Nobody had them and some guy at the Hardware store even told me that I couldnt find one . He said I should change everything to white. Like I can afford to buy a new toilet, a new bathtub (mine is a whirlpool) a new shower and two sinks!!! No way!! I dont have that kind of money at moment to buy all that. So I went to a specialized store that sells plumbing equipment only. They did have one at $44. . I know I could have bought one for $8. just about anywhere but they were all white and I cant see a grey toilet with a white seat........no! So I had no choice and paid for it. No theres nothing fancy about my toilet seat, its very ordinary and made of plastic. Do you find that when companies decide that we all have to go in a certain color that they sort of push you to change everything in your house because THEY say its all white now and not grey (or other color)?? Have you ever tried to find something in a specific color to be told that they didnt make it anymore because.....it wasnt in fashion anymore? Are we all expected to change everything in our houses because THEY say so?

Haha! Toilets, my favourite subject lol. We have an extremely old-fashioned BLUE bathroom suite and the toilet is one of those big ones that sounds like Niagara Falls when it flushes..there's so much water in the cistern! It has a wooden seat because the blue one..well, I dunno 'cos I've always known the wooden seat so I guess it broke. Now, this toilet is the bigger version. They tend to be a lot smaller now and yet our derriers have become bigger (go figure) so that part doesn't make sense to me. If the seat broke we would probably have to take it to B&Q as I don't trust the shop to actually sell what we want. Taking the seat in ensures a new one would be the same size..but it wouldn't be blue, it would have to be a pine, wooden jobby. What do I think of my bathroom suite? Not a lot! In fact, I'd love to bulldoze the whole house.

Good luck with your painting! A few years ago we had tiles put on the walls. In retrospect we should've had all white but no, hubby and his Dad picked out the "ones on offer" so I'm now stuck with tiles I don't actually like that much. Serves me right for not speaking up at the time!

Your favorite subject?? You're too funny. Wow, I havent seen a wooden seat in a very long time here. Never had the pleasure to sit on one either!! I guess my toilet must be an old one too. Not sure how much water it uses as I dont really care and most people do fit well on my toilet.......I think . I guess your blue is older than my grey though. I bet you wouldnt be able to find a blue toilet seat anymore. I know the shop I went to have only one grey left. They do sell them on the net, someone higher up sent me a link but the problem is that you cant measure them to make sure it fits. I dont like those new toilets where it barely has water to flush it all out.....some have a system of one flush for number 1 and two flushes for number 2.....how silly is that!! I dont mind using less water when I have a shower but not when its time to flush my toilet!! Bulldozing the whole house down.....mmmm maybe its time you moved lol. Im planning on changing my whole bathroom.....but keep the grey appliances in there though. I'll paint the whole vanities (3 of them) white and the walls a pale grey. Ive seen a picture of what it will look like and I'll get to it in the Fall. Now its sorta pinkish and purple....uglyyyyyy!!!! You might want to paint the place. Surprising what paint can do !!!

I've just spent the last four days stripping the wallpaper and paint off the bathroom walls. It was a truly horrible, messy job I wouldn't wish on anyone! Now I have to sand them down and paint them. I'm so tired that I'm going to leave them until next week. I might have a bit more energy by then!

That's a hefty sum of money for a ... toilet seat. Well, in the offline world, sometimes that happens. But, as our friend 3honor says, the internet can be a powerful friend when searching unusual stuff. Because as you say, "they" always offer "standard" items.

The only problem with that is that UK toilets and seats seem to come in odd shapes and sizes. It is very difficult to find a replacement unless you can see the exact one you want 'in person'. It may be different in other countries.

Yes its a hefty sum of money for a toilet seat . Thing is, I did buy one years ago but had to return it as it didnt quite fit right. I measured the old one and had my measuring tape with me to make sure it would fit this time around. The internet is a great place to buy things but you cant use your measuring tape sometimes to make sure it'll fit. Our toilets also come in all sizes here too. I think they do this on purpose

Of course! That's the same with anything that should only be purchased once in a lifetime! Manufacturers have us over a barrel!

I haven't had much trouble finding toilet seats because I usually stick to basic white, but I have had trouble with other things. One time I wanted, really wanted a white teakettle. We looked everywhere and no one had one. One day about a year later we were up in one of those little bitty towns in the mountains of Wyoming and happened to stop by a hardware store, and lo and behold - a beautiful white teakettle! You find the perfect thing in the strangest place sometimes!

Ive learned my lesson and will stick to white from now on for bathroom and kitchen appliances!! You're right, we do find what we're looking for in the strangest places sometimes! Im happy for you that you could get to have your white teakettle.......even if it was years after, better late than never, right?

I never have this problem, I always bring mine home and paint them, so it doesn't matter what color they start out as. But black is a little harder then other colors.

Yes I do tole painting and then finish it with several coast of varnish I've never had one chip. I sure had fun in the kid's BR when I painted theirs. I use to change it every so often at least until they were teens, then they didn't think it was so funny. I can hear them now, Oh Mom what have you done, now none of our friends can use the bathroom. Door slams, Mom laughs. I think the one like the open mouth of a Lion really got to them.

HAHAHAHA, Oh I can see it now, the lion's opened mouth haha, this is cute! But yes Im sure if your kids were teens at the time, they didnt like it that much!! Well I wish I would have started my discussion BEFORE buying my toilet seat. What a great idea!! I could kick myself for not having thought of it before!! Thanks for letting me know. Come to think of it, it would be nice to do something fun for the downstairs bathroom.......mmmm now you have me thinking !!

LOL this reminds me of when I went to buy one several years ago. I went to so many stores to find the right one for the bathroom. Once I picked out the one I found best they did not have it in stock. So I had to go to so many like stores and it took almost the entire day. They tried to get me to change my mind but none of the others would have matched the washroom color also and I was not about to select the ones they had. I think there are makers today who feel we should upgrade everything each time we need one thing.

I know how you must have felt!! Yes they want us to upgrade every time they decide to change the colors or style. They were also trying to get me to buy a whole new bathroom.....in their dreams Im not going to spend that kind of money when what I have is still in good condition.

I think the bathroom is the most fun to decorate. Anyway it fits my sense of humor, that of about a 9 year old.

You're right, you gave me some idea there with your other post about painting the toilet seat. Ive noticed that people who have kids will decorate the bathroom in a fun way.....for the kids, but why cant I do the same even if we have no kids I'll keep that in mind thats for sure. I wont forget about painting the toilet seats in a fun way

No not toilet seats, or colors. I have some track lighting in my house that have gone out. These are the types where the ballast is included in the unit. Of course I couldn't find any replacement parts at Home Depot or Wal-Mart at $12 each. When I finally found a similar one, it was two-towns over (about a 45-minute drive), and each was $35!

Same problem for me with that type of lighting. We had to take the other ones down and install new ones. This is how they make money from us.

My 'inherited' bathroom suite is peach, with a wooden toilet-seat. Like you, I can't afford to change it to a white one. Right now I am stripping all the old paper and paint off the WC walls so I can paint them. The trouble is what wall-colour goes with a peach suite? I don't want to use white as it will make it look too boring and unfinished in such a small space. If the suite had been white I could have used any colour under the Sun! I'm even more frustrated as I am an Artist! The vagaries of Fashion in anything is only for the well off!

I feel for you!! I know what its like to be stuck with a color and trying to match the paint to go with it. I want on Sherwin Williams site where you can upload a pic of your bathroom and pick any color so you can try it. Thats where I found that light grey with everything else white (vanities) with grey appliances looks great. Heres the link if you're interested: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/visualizer/

You're very welcome and I know that one is working because Ive been toying with it for my kitchen, living room and bathroom of course . Its very easy to outline the parts you want to "paint". You can have more than one choice of color or outline in the same picture. For example, you can pick #1 for the walls, #2 for the floor. I think you can go up to 5 if I remember correctly. Have fun and hope you'll share with us when you make up your mind?

Thanks, Magical! I'll have a gander at that one. I did try another site that has a paint planner but it wasn't working!

Typicall answer of a salesman to tell you to change everything in white! I am afraid that in the world we are living now we are daily forced to take it (buy everything new) or leave it (pay a lot extra for something that is not worth the price). Over here we were forced to buy dvds (no records anymore so you can throw your recordplayer away), you are forced to buy a new tv otherwise you can't see the broadcasted programms anymore, etc etc. The only way to make money is to change everything each time again (clothes, furniture, computer programs, cars, etc.) And if you make it in a bad quality as well you can be sure you will always have customers again. BTW I never saw a grey one over here but will keep my eyes open from now on.

Yes thats right, they expect us to buy everything new nearly every year. There is one store here still selling records and record players for those who dont want to listen to cds. As for tv's, they are now all changing to HD and fortunately, they sell the little box that makes it all possible to keep your old tv and still get the benefit of watching all the HD channels. The box is about $100. so they say. Everything is made cheap now and wont last more than 5 years max!! Its this way with everything now. I thought that as the technology got better, everything would, but its not the case. Now if you have satellite to watch tv, well if its raining, you wont get the signal. It used to not matter before, rain, shine, sleet or snow, you could always watch tv! I used to have a "automn gold" fridge and stove that I bought in 1976. I changed it all last year for white appliances. The salesman told me that my new stove and fridge will NOT last me that long and it was best to not get the most expensive ones. For once I did get a great salesman and wrote a letter to the company saying how happy I was to have been served by him......of course I didnt say what he told me about the cheap appliances . I dont want to follow that fad that says I have to buy everything every year or so. If its not broken, I wont change it.....period!! I found my grey toilet seat, had to pay $44 for it but it'll last me until my appliances break and I have to change it all.
