Stop sending my call overseas

I know from a discussion on here ages ago, that you CAN ask to be transferred to someone who speaks english, or back to America, but I wish that America would stop outsourcing on customer service calls and just keep the calls here in the US. It seems like a lot of places that you call through toll free transfer you to another country, or atleast to a company where most of their employees are of a different nationality. It's fine if they can communicate completely with no problems, but it's when they don't understand that it's annoying. A lot of people are sort of antisocial, they don't want to be on the phone longer then they have to be. I am one of those people, and so while I will continue to be kind, I still wish that they would not outsource our calls, especially on things like our cellphone service. I want to be able to talk to someone and get it figured out in only a few minutes, not spend 30 minutes on the phone. How do you feel about this?

I don't care where they send my call. I've called centres at various times and often have more trouble understanding the ones in the same country as me (UK) than the ones abroad. It makes no difference at all WHERE the centre's located - it's the incompetent centre management hiring people who don't speak clearly that's the problem. Outsourcing isn't the problem: staffing and training is. I avoid call centres like the plague anyway. I always write: I want a printed record of all the communications (since I've been fighting a bank for over three years, you can guess why) and half the people at the call centres I've spoken to in the past can't do anything for me anyway.

Agree with you, yes it is the training and staffing that is where some businesses cut the costs. As about fighting the bank, I don't have any idea about the problem you are facing but what I can understand is that it must be a PITA .

You are mean..lol , that is the reason I stay away from freelancers. They are smart and can really get upto your nerve if they feel like it. Keep going, ;)

It makes me laugh now. No stress, no pain. Mostly because I *know* they wouldn't dare do anything legal about it... sure, I owe them some of the money but they've messed up SO badly (like still owing me about a year's insurance payments) - and they know it - that they just send rude letters, I reply saying "No, not until you sort out this stuff" and we go round in circles. How long does a debt last in the UK? Is it 4 years or 7 years? Either way, I'm getting close to the point where I can say "Hey, too late."

You can't help it. I am in India, and there are many call centres opened here. It is the money that matters, the salary they would have to offer is much more in USA than here. People here are quite fluent in English, there might be problem with some, but overall it comes out to be effective and efficient for companies. Same goes with other countries. So, you can't do anything about it, just hope when you call next time that someone with fluent English answers you. :P

No offense to you or your country, but too many americans want our call centers BACK in America. We want to be able to know that our problem can be handled. Those calls that are redirected to places like India etc may not be able to answer all of our questions or do all that they could do if they were in America, regardless of how well they speak English. From my experience with calling call centers, if I get directed to another country sometimes I have to be redirected to somewhere else and someone else just to get my questions answered, often times back to the US anyway, so why not just keep our call centers here, where the U.S. economy and people can benefit? Our economy is suffering enough, if the jobs were back here more people would be able to buy things, thus, keeping it open.

No offense taken. I know, English is not the primary language of people here. That is what am saying, if the people in US start working for less money, maybe you can have your dream fulfilled. ;) :P Yep, the economy in UK and US really went sour. Good luck :P

There are places that have completely lost my business due to this. When I call a motel three miles from me to make a reservation, and plan to walk in their door and give them cash, and I have to talk to two foreign call centers, one to find out if there is a vacancy and one to make the reservation, and then I cannot come give them cash, then they can take their rooms elsewhere. It is just too stupid. I live in a small town so that I can do business locally, this is totally unreasonable. Now the cable company routes all of its incoming calls to a call center state side. They say that is because they want the people in the office to talk to the people who walk into the office. Once that was explained to me, I was okay with that, but that is a call center only an hour from me, and they could answer my questions, etc.

The last big company I worked for (excluding the government) switched to outsourcing for call centres and software coding. It caused them SO many problems - especially the coding side. They lost far, far more money than they would have if they'd carried on paying the (relatively very expensive) pro team in Paris where I was based... and they'd have had their projects delivered on time.

That is the same way with me. When I make a call like that, I want someone who can understand me and I understand them and can speak plain English!

Not only that, but sometimes when the calls get forwarded overseas, our quetsions are answered because the people qualified to answer them are back here in the US, or somewhere else.

I abosultely hate that your in America but when you call somewhere like for examply At&T you get trasnfered somewhere not even in America and your like what the heck is this going on. I dont understand this because America is having so manyh problems with people being unemployed but now we know why because alot of our companies we use arent even in the united states or might be but with only one call center which is really wrong because so many people need help over the phone with certain things and we want to talk to someone with perfect English and no we arent being discremantory against other races and nationatalities at all its just we want someone who can speak english and no what we are talking about. I was just told through a At&t person that you can ask for someone in your country or that speaks english clearer through the person that was at my house and im glad he told me that because ill usually do that now because i want our dollars going to America not a differnt country because we are the ones hurting to find a good job and not be unemployed.

Yes, I just feel like we need to keep the calls here in the US, give our US citizens jobs, and not outsource the calls and pay people in another country to help us. There are so many people who are unemployed who would be THRILLED to have a job like that, if there were only some available. On a side note, I noticed someone has tagged my discussion as RACIST AGAIN.. and that irritates me. Just to let you know I did contact GAA, and if they think it IS racist, it might be deleted... However, I don't think it IS! grr.. sorry just irritated. Yes, do ask them to transfer you back to America, it might irritate them, but if more calls were being redirected to America, the companies would realize they need to hire more people over here!

For me I don't have no reason to follow in you because my husband don't work in that job.

Neither does mine, so I am not sure the relevance as to why you can't follow in this discussion.

What I really hate is to get a customer service representative that can hardly speak English. I've been known to simply say, "thank you" and hang up, then call back, hoping to get someone I can understand and who can understand me. I don't think it's right for companies to employ workers in other places when our citizens are going without jobs. They say it's to save money, but what good will money do them when no one can afford their service because they're out of work?

Cheap labor: Many companies outsource because of cheap labor. And because most people are aware of laws protecting them against workplace abuse, abusive companies tend to outsource to bypass these laws.

It is so agravating. I get upset and nervous when there is something wrong with my computer. I call tech support and usually get someone foreign but I can understand them. So one time I had to ask for an american speaking person and it took forever. I am always happy to hear an american speaking person on the other end of the phone.

I live in the UK, and a lot of our call centres are in India. I'm not very good at understanding accents, which means that I really do struggle when I am on the phone to people from overseas. I am okay at understanding people if I can be standing next to them face to face, however when I talk to them on the phone I just don't find it as easy to be honest with you. People always complain about the UK not having any jobs, and then they set up our call centres abroad which means that there are hundreds of jobs being taken by people in other countries providing services that could easily be provided in our own country.

Although I've talked to many incompetent call center agents in the past, I've also talked to a few who were very helpful and were able to get me through some issues that I had. I don't like it that people here in north america are losing their jobs because companies outsource this service, but I could certainly understand why they are doing this. They too must answer to their share holders who are also from north america. So in reality, the ones losing out are the middle class and below. Anyway, I just wish that whoever is hiring these people, make sure that they can speak and communicate well with customers.
