Updating your location in Facebook with Facebook Places

Facebook has a nice features where you can update where you've been, where you're headed and where you are now. The features known as Facebook places. This i think, the feature in facebook that i rarely use. I usually update my location when i go vacation or when i go on a business trip. It usually pretty helpful to inform people that i want to visit, also people in the office so they are updated about my current location. It might come in handy if they need something to do with a branch that i visit.
Off course you shouldn't over use this function because it can be use by bad people to fool people that you know or even to fool you, since they are know about your current location.
Do you use facebook places often? When and where do you usually update your location in facebook?

I don't ever update my location on facebook because I don't feel that people need to know where I am at. If I went on vacation or visited a site that might be of interest to others then I might consider using the places feature, but generally I like to keep that sort of information off the internet. Those people that need to know where I am will know because I will tell them, but everybody does not need to know.

Well like what OpinionatedLady said, i also totally agree with you. I also think that the reason facebook use facebook place is to make people share their location when they are in a special place. It was never meant to be share in every minute of your life. Over using this feature is dangerous.

i usually update my location in fb. im just fond of tagging places and friends i have been with.

Well do you update your location in facebook a lot zaskasahagun? How often do you do that? And in what occassion you usually do that? Do you ever found problem because you update your location in facebook often? Did people who read location is all your friend in real life? Thanks for sharing.

lordcaocal2025, the thought of someone knowing my every move creeps me out! I do not us this locator feature on Facebook and really have no plans for using it in the future. Seems it is loved by many of the younger folks and techies but it just isn't my cup of tea.

Well yes, some one knowing our every move it's a very creepy thing. And make them know where you are and where you go also creepy. But off course there are exception. Using it for once or twice a month is okay, and off course set the status to be viewed only a certain people only.

Well can you tell us more utopia96 about the reason why you don't really use the facebook place location. Why you don't want to use it? Is it because security reason, or it is because you just don't like it? I agree with you, facebook always update new feature for us.

No, I don't update my location in Facebook coz I don't want anybody to know where I am. I wasn't paying attention about that before, and I posted a status in my FB using my phone and one of my friends sent me a text message and asked me if I was still in that certain location, and I was surprised and asked my friend how did he know that I was there, and he told me that I just posted my status in FB and below it my location showed..

Oh i see, well it is not okay if you always updated your location every time you update your status, it might also dangerous because people will know where you are. But i think it is okay to updated it every once in a while. Anyway, thanks for sharing this with us chcgale.

I personally have never updated my Facebook location. Not because I haven't wanted to, but because I'm not sure how to or if it's just something available for smart phones. But I notice people on my News-feed that say they're in a current location and it's actually the completely wrong area & it's been quite a few people who say they're not actually where Facebook is saying. I'm not sure if you've personally had problems with updating your location or if it's just some of my friends.
Can you update your Facebook places without a smart phone?
Have you had any issues with it saying you're in the wrong place?

Well i don't know about this. I also updates my facebook location using smartphones, so i can't really give you information about that. And yes, i do find people update their location at the wrong place. I also don't know how they use this, and i think it is stupid to do that.

Well if that what happened, then i think the blame should be put to either the phones have a GPS malfunction or the Cell Phone Cell Operator that he used are having a problem. I know this because i also have a problem with my GPS back then. It always located to the old place i visit and never updated. When i changed my simcard, it work perfectly.

I personally dont update my location on facebook. I feel that people dont need to know where i am every minute of the day. I also feel that by publicizing my location or locations it would make it VERY easy for a stalker to learn my habits - places i go and when...as well as thieves to know if i am home or not.

Well that is right saundyl. Updating your location often will make VERY easy for a stalker to learn your habits. Also it will give guidance to thieves about what time you are not at home. But off course updating it every once in a while it's okay since it is not a habit. Off course you should still share it to the person you know personally only.

Well yes, you are right. Having a lot of friend in facebook, especially people that you don't know personally will make you have less privacy. Off course, having only people that you know personally doesn't guarantee your information 100 % safe. Some people some time broke the trust we gave them for a little price.

I have started using this feature on my phone when I am out and about in various local public locations such as when we visit the local beach. I recently used this function while on the laptop too when we were travelling in the USA so that friends and family knew which city we were in at any particular time.
I do not use it however when I am at home as I do not want the whole world knowing exactly where I live. I am happy for them to know which city I live in and even which part of the city, but not the street or anything.

Well that is exactly what i meant. Using it wisely is good. Off course you should share only to people that you know and trust, when you share your location. Don't want the whole world to know that you left your home empty. It could lead some trouble back home.

I actually hate this function. If I want someone to know where I am I will tell them. Not everyone needs to know everything at all times. My life is ,my own. Not to mention as you said there are bad people out there who can and will use it to steal from you. My Brother in law was doing this. He would know when his cousins where out and go to their houses and take little trinkets no one would notice where gone. The same with his Grandparents and Uncle. (he lives with my in laws) It took months before people caught on. I wish they had called the cops on him he really should be punished but they want to keep it in the family which means ignore his bad behaviour yet again. But that's it though. Even people you should or think you can trust might not deserve it and this function allows them to stalk you.

Well thanks for sharing OpinionatedLady. Well it is really bad for your brother in law to do that. I think some one should punish him so he could stop doing thing like this. And yes, i also agree that people that we think we can trust might not deserve the trust.

I have some friends who do that all the time. I know when they're at the gym, eating their lunch, or whatever. Do I really need to know every little place they are at? It's like a GPS thing on Facebook! I don't use that feature - because first, I don't have the kind of phone with web access - so I can't update on the road. And I don't need people to know where I am . . . they might find out after the fact when/if I post it on my status later on. And I especially wouldn't clue anyone in on the fact that I'm not home - in case anyone wants to sneak in here (although I don't think they would - I know everyone on my FB).

Well you should talk to your friend about that much2say. Tell them that using facebook places feature almost every time they go out is a very dangerous thing. It can make bad people know your schedule and they can use it to do some crime. Using it rarely is okay though.

Well off course it is inconvenient to be known by all of our friend where we are every time. But it is not about using this facebook places futures every single minutes, it is about using it in the right time. Off course the right time definition can differ for each individual.

I also don't use facebook locations.
I don't know what people can do with that information.
If , for example , someone want to break into my house , if he knows for sure that i'm not at home , he might use it for his benefit.
Some people can maybe track my habbits of where I go and when I go , and can also use it to think where I will be later , what I will do...
The only time facebook used this function for me was to inform me about someone near mexico who was trying to break into my account on facebook , they showed me his coordinates. I changed my password immediately.

Well if someone want to break into your house, they might already tail you and watch your habit secretly. So it is doesn't matter if you update your location on facebook or not. What dangerous is, when people actually don't have any bad intention to you,but seeing you update your location almost every day, it will give them the intention to do just that.

Well i don;t think people who update their location is a spam, off course if they updated it too much like every hour or two, then it could consider to be spam. Off course updating location seem not really interesting for some people, but for other it might interesting. Especially if our friend is in other cities where we can ask them to bought something back thing that are only exist there.

You are right , it can get some people an idea they didn't think about.
It's like letting the cat to be the guard of the cream.
It is just so unnecessary to do in my opinion. When most of my friends update their location , I just delete or hide the notice , it is so not interesting me...I see that as a spam.

i do not believe to update my places on FB. i think it is not required to let the entire social circle know where i am right now. how does it matter to them? FB has a lot of features which are useful for specific purpose however, we should not it just for the sake of it ....

Well thanks for sharing your opinion about facebook feature the facebook places with us shwetat195. Well off course we should use all the function in facebook with a purpose. If we use it wisely, then i think it is okay to use this function. People have different need, and i nice feature like this might come in handy for many other people.

It seems like one way to inform those close to you of your current location without spending so much on calls and emails. I have not used that feature yet but I think I would want to try. I like informing my relatives on my where about and sometimes it takes too long for me to inform all of them. Facebook is a good place to change.
