But i see many people who doesnt apply oil to their hair ,but their hair is still very strong and healthy. As far as i know we apply coconut oil to hair, are there any other oils which we can apply like coconut oil, please share the myths and facts of applying oil to hair, is it really very useful? i feel i can get a more valuable points here, as we have people here from around the world...

Actually I am one of those you are talking about. From my childhood I have never oiled my hair and yet it is smooth, shiny and soft to touch. The only hair care I do is shampooing regularly at a gap of two days.I use a herbal hair cleanser called Kesh Kanti by the renowned yoga guru Baba Ramdev. It does not let my hair fall or become brittle. If I apply oil,my head feels hot and I cannot tolerate oil at all since it leads to accumulation of dirt on my hair and makes it sticky.I think if we keep our scalp clean and eat a healthy diet including lots of green leafy vegetables, the hair can be kept smooth and shiny.Junk food needs to be avoided. If these tips are followed in my opinion no hair oil needs to be applied.

The fact that you only wash your hair every other day rather than every day also plays a part in not having to add extra oil to your hair for it to remain healthy and not get too dry. Some people think that they need to wash their hair every day for it to be clean, but this is usually counterproductive to having healthy hair. Our scalps produce natural oil, which keeps our hair from getting too dry and brittle, and washing our hair every day takes away the natural oil and often dries it out more than normal.

I have actually never used it myself. I was admiring a lady's dark and long hair one day, and a friend who was with me at the time informed me that it is customary among Indian to apply oil to their hair to have that gleaming look. I was told if I go to one of the Indian stores, I would find many different hair oil for that purpose.

I am an Indian and my hair is of real good quality but I have never oiled it from my childhood.I find oil makes my hair very sticky and I get a dull appearance.I have always believed in maintaining a proper diet for keeping the hair lustrous. Not to mention keeping the scalp and hair clean through regular application of a good herbal hair cleanser.

i have tried to apply oil to my hair before because they say coconut oil is good for the hair... i just noticed that it does not work for me though because my hair is already very oily only after a day of not washing... i noticed it really so i stopped putting more oil as it would be really greasy. Maybe you can use hair cuticle coat if you want your hair to be a bit shiny and less dry... it is oil like in texture but gives really a good shine to the hair.

Oil makes my hair very greasy too and my head feels so hot.So I have opted to shampoo and keep my hair clean to rid it off the dirt and grime it attracts. My scalp is also quite oily.

When I was small, my grandmother applied warm coconut oil to my hair once in a while before going to bet and wrapped my head. The next day she would wash it. She said that hair did not get frizzy that way. I have seen that in beauty parlous they have a sort of oil that they use to masage the hair when they give special tratments.

I never heard about applying oil to hair. So I wonder what you talk about. I also don't think that the very very very small amount of "oil" you find in shampoos is oil at all. If you buy here shampoo with coconut you won't find the oil in it. You might have hair masks but this is washed out as well. I doubt if it is useful. Unless you have very very dry hair or a structure that is might break. But if so then mostly vaseline is used.

Hi prashu! I also have a long hair and yes during my younger years, my mother would put some coconut oil to make the hair smooth and shiny. But now, my daughter and I use some hot oil products that are available in the market. But we only use it twice or once a month.

In Western society, oily, greasy hair means dirty, unwashed hair.. Some people suffer from excessive oils in their skin, particularly the face and head and careful washing more poften is required. My own hair has always been dry - healthy, shiny and strong but dry and wavy as well. I would buy oil treatment from the hair dresser and treat my hair overnight. The best thing is that I did not have to wash it too often. People with oily hair have to wash it regularly, which just makes it oilier. These days, now that I'm older and retired I use coconut oil on my hair. I don't see how it helps though because it has no residual effect.

virgin coconut oil can really do wonder on your hair. You also need to massage your scalp a little to stimulate hair growth. my grandmother told me this.

hi you are right, virgin coconut oil is the best , i too heard about this from my grandmother, actually people in the olden days used to use only the pure coconut oil, as they dont have so many brands/varieties available in those days, but still they used to have good hair

This is actually good for the hair. Like you said to gain strength and shine. You can even use olive oil if you want. I get oil in a tube(VO5 brand)and you just snip off the tip, heat it in a cup of hot water for afew minutes, then apply it to the head. No brainer.

The brand has been around for years here in the U.S.. You can heat up olive oil or whatever and use it. The heat just helps it do its job.

hello, I want to point out that I am Indian too. I do oil my hair, but the reasons Indians do it and others don't is due to our weather. Oiling is not necessary for the hair, actually, no matter what anyone says. It only benefits the scalp. And let me tell you, oil simply build a protective layer over the scalp so that the scalp can use its natural oils to give protein to the hair roots. And there are many types of hair oils that you can use, based on your scalp type. Your scalp is like your skin anywhere on the body, and it can be oily, itchy, dry, flaky or irritated. Coconut hair oil is traditionally the ideal one, but I find that it makes my hair dry. Other than that, we can use almond oil [which has a lot of vitamin E], or olive oil [which is great, but thick and therefore hard to remove from the hair], or even castor oil [shocking, I know, but it makes hair thicker]. Just know one thing if you are thinking about using castor oil, don't use it undiluted. it is super thick and even 3 washes will not remove it completely. just mix it with another, lighter oil, and use that. Another myth we Indians have is that not oiling your hair will damage it. That is not true, obviously. It is the heat, dust and pollution, chemical treatments, lack of proper nutrition and styling equipment that damages the hair. Fact is, no matter what experiments you do with your hair, you need to nourish it, and condition it properly. Eat healthy, use appropriate shampoo [coordinating with your hair type], use a conditioner every time you shampoo [yes, every time, because shampoo cleanses, but also removes essential oils, which conditioner returns to the hair]. Oil your hair once a week [and you only need to apply and massage it on the scalp, not the strands, but up to you] which you may wash off after an hour or two or leave it overnight. And once a week, do deep conditioning in your hair [very beneficial]. They do this at hair saloons but you can do it at home to. Find a good hair pack, apply it, and then wrap a hot towel around it for ten minutes, and then wash it off. Taddaa!!! i can go on about hair treatments for a few more days, but I guess this is much more than you asked for in the first place. Hope I didn't bore you...

Well, at the moment I know of only one thing that prevents white/grey hair. Or at least delays its appearance. Eat lots of Amla. Raw one, or the pickled ones. I am sure you know what I am saying? But you won't find it now, it comes in winter... Eat about 2-3 per day.

I think applying oil to the hair is present in our country alone. And this custom too diminishing among the youngsters in the name of 'fashion'. Applying oil to the hair would make our body cool. It is the only fact. Other than that it will prevent hair from drying or getting tangle. Nourishing, making it strong, blah... blah.... blah are for only business. Other than coconut oil, other oils are used like neem oil, castor oil. They gives our body cool and also antiseptic.

yes, its definitely related to climatic issues, but neem and castor oil has strong odour, not very friendly... thanks for the information

Yes they do have strong odor. But they are healthy. In the name of fashion these oils are vanished from usage.

So far as I heard hair gets nutrition when we send some fruits and vegetables to our stomachs.lol Fruits and vegetables can maintain upkeep proper overall hormonal functioning and saves our hair from being grey as well. Also digestion problem can affect our hair, skin and everything in our body. So never rear any kind of stomach disease.lol Anyway oil or shampoo can contribute to developement of hair being a sheild from dryness, sunburn etc.

I didnt start applying oil to my hair until a few months ago. I was using a type of creame on my hair to keep it from getting frizzy but it made my hair hard when the creame dried so the curls were like stiff. It smelled nice and looked good but I dont think it was good for my hair. I use an oil on it now its a morraccan oil or something like that. It works well to tame my hair and keep it from being frizzy but you cant use much at the top of your hair or it makes it really greasy looking. I use it mostly from the hair ear length and down. I have long hair.

I have relatives who do this but i personally do not as i do not like my hair too oily.. since my hair is already naturally oil or shiny that is.. ( not bragging here) but it will help especially if your hair is dry i guess. but i do not like doing it as i get my face also oily and i do not use coconut milk in the hair as what people do here.. but for some they like it

Hello prashu228 I have seen this practice in the movie, The English Patient. Also, I have read that both Samuel and David allowed Samuel to apply the oil to their head, which I assume also means that their hair was involved. I would be careful about some of the oils you may choose to apply around an open flame. That could be disastrous.
