There was a lady mentioned on the news who was employed at Macy's Department store for 73 years! Can you imagine staying with a company that long?!?!? She worked in the accounting department so clearly she was probably better paid than any clerk on the sales floor was. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/business/2012/09/macys-longest-serving-employee-retires-after-73-years/ Could you ever imagine being so happy at your workplace with your co-workers, conditions, and wages to stick around for a lift time?

I think she must be 93 years old now assuming she works at the age of 20 years old. That is such a long period of time and experience, I personally would stick to a company that treats me good, but I haven't found one yet, hopefully online job which I am doing now last long than a decade.

I worked for one company for 15 years. They moved from NJ to FL and I couldn't afford the transfer. If I was able to I would still be working for them. So yes, I can see doing this. My Dad was in the Army for 49 years, my husband for 21 years in the Navy - lots of people have been employed with the same company for long periods of time. She would have been on top of all the benefits because those are company wide when covered. Salary on the other hand may not have been as good as you might think. Years ago the salaries were very low and with normal raises throughout the years she might not make what someone new in her position would expect to make. She loved her job and was able to make ends meet and retire so it worked for her. Who knows, her husband could have had a great paying job and she just loved working for Macy's. It was more family oriented years ago than the work force is today.

I think that's possible provided that the person is satisfied with the work environment and she's not the breadwinner or doesn't need to work really hard to support children through school and all. Perhaps she's a valuable asset with the company, that's why she has better pay and better treatment. 73years means that she's been there since inception of the company. That makes her a really important asset. I think I could stay with a company for my whole life, provided that I enjoy what I do there and enjoy the system of how things work and I don't see any problem or conflicts among the people and the environment is just great. Have a great mylot experience ahead!

Wow! That is a long time. I thought my 14 years was long I think that people from her era have a very different work ethic than people born after her though. That may have something to do with it too. It is hard to imagine being in one place that long but I guess time flies.

Now that is what you call dedication and I hope she got a sweet retirement package from that deal(never-mind the amount of vacation days so most likely built up). Good publicity for Macy's as well having someone work for you for that long shows you most likely have a good work atmosphere. I can't picture myself working where I work for longer than 5 years never mind 73(although the reason is I see myself going further through a large company and progressing etc). Thanks for sharing this.

That's awesome! Maybe she really get well along with other people/co-worker. Being loyal to your job/company or "anything" will give you something in return =)

I can imagine that. Where i work theres people that have been there for 50 years or more and I work in a hospital. I guess if you really like you're job and co workers you just stick to it instead of changing jobs where you're not happy. My dad has been employed at the hospital going on 30 yrs i been there 16 yrs. Some days I don't like my job but I stick it out because some of my co workers I can stand help me get thru the day and the ones that don't I just ignore them.

Wow! I couldn't believe it. Her dedication is truly rare. I don't think I could even stay that long in a company, my normal threshold was usually 2 years before, I would then quit a job after 2 years because I would feel like there is something else I was better suited at than just earning a wage to pay the bills. Though in this company I'm in now, my threshold has been increased to 4 years .

That's great. And they treated her really well, too. They say they'll find things for her to do as she doesn't want to totally leave. I worked for a company for 21yrs. If they didn't finally get sold I'd still be there. I enjoyed reading the article. She's a pretty sharp lady.

After reading the article that you've shared, I was only left admiring the lady. She must be really happy and contented with Macy's to last that long.

She maybe satisfied and contented with her job with the people and the employer. That's really a loyal employee the company is lucky to have her.

yes I could, I wish I was able too, my health stopped me. My boyfriend I think will work til the day he passes on. He loves to work and be around people. He would just be bored at home.

She must be one amazing woman. I hope she was rewarded well for her loyalty. And I wonder what kind of discount she got at Macy's. At one point do you say, oh just take it! lol

Wow! I don't think I could have stuck with something like that for so long. We recently had a gal retire from the bank after being there for 60 years....I thought that was alot!

hi 3SnuggleBunnies wow thats a real record.,I doubt if I could ha have stuck around for that long a time. It was really nice that they'all honored her too like that,. I am really impressed. I stay ed working in the l ibrary for 23 years and then was forced to retire as the second in comm and did not like an "Old lady working'in my library" well the two wrongfully fired me citing' age as thew onl y reason, Headquarters of the co unty libray system came dow n hard on the manager and her lady ? assistant, firing both for invalid dismissal of me on grounds of my age.,sadly headquarter notified me in the hospital but I cou ld never work again shelving books as I had injured my shoulder so 'badly it could not beset,so had to have an artifical shoulder joint replacement.

I suppose she must have been paid enough to outweigh any hatred of the job. If she spent most of the career in the accounting department she probably did a lot of the bossing around, and not much of the being bossed around. I don't think I could stay that long in a job, but who knows.
