I Don't Get It...

It amazes me how much some people absolutely hate their jobs. For example, this person I know wants to have a career as a teacher but she cannot even stand children...Why go for that?? Why not go for something you love to do? With no patience and no love for children, being a teacher is a TERRIBLE idea! I just don't get it. Do you know someone that is going to get into a career they know they hate already? Why not go for something else?

The idea that I had to go to college to get a job in a field I loathe is one of the reasons I planned to kill myself at age 18! Now I know the Only work to do is something you like. I have had the same job for many years Why? Because I love it. The worse job for me would be teaching. I have no patience for children and I do not want to teach anything!

I agree, if I have to spend so much money on school and use up so much of my time, I will MAKE SURE it is a job I love! Otherwise there is no point in wasting so much time and money! That's good that you love your job. I miss my last job a lot but they shut down. See, I would LOVE to teach. I love children and I have the patience for it. =) I just don't want to stop Home Schooling my kids for it...

teaching is not limited to children, there is adult education, technical training and college courses where people teach as well. In my counselling capacity I teach adults as well. I would not have the patience for children either.

Well the person was referring to teaching children, young children at that. Which could affect the children in many ways that are not good... I don't understand why anyone would choose something they don't like when they have a choice to do something they do like! Otherwise why go to college? You might as well settle for any job instead of wasting so much time and money...

I think that these kind of career choices that are clearly not the right choice are actually a lot more common than we think that they are. I know that when I was in school there was more than one teacher that I had who was not a good teacher because of the fact that they really didn't like children and didn't care about their future. The reason that I think that people do this is because of the fact that they see the career direction that they are taking is something that will give them a comfortable life and a lot of people also tend to think that they will eventually grow to enjoy the job that they have.

I know, I had plenty of teachers that acted like they were miserable being near us kids! Why do that to yourself? I don't understand it at all! Yeah, it is a secure job and everything but that's clearly not a good reason to work with children. Children can be affected by such decisions. I think it is unfair to punish children like that...

when i was young, i didn't know what career i would prefer in the future. Even i didn't know what a career would ask for and what career was proper for me. I suppose many person choose a wrong major when enter colleage, they have not make a through prepartion. When they have realized it, they found they have no chance to restart and some have no time or no courage. So they have to do a job which they doesn't like, they have no choice, i think. Especially, nowadays finding a job is not so easy, so many people prefer to have a job to do first rather than find a favourite job, no job means no money to earn.

Yes but once your close to being done you should have an idea of what you want to do. And if you know for sure that you do not like children, why would you try to be a teacher??? That just does not make sense to me! Jobs and careers are two very different things. With jobs yes we take what we can get but a career is something we should enjoy since it is long term...

Well, people need a job to earn money to support their family or their living..that's why even though they hate it but they still do it. i think they want to change but they have not a chance to change it at all. Anyone likes to do favorite work and can earn money from it. But in this life, we can have what we wish, sometime.

I am not talking about a job, I am talking about paying to go to school for a career and choosing something you hate! Why would someone want to do that?? If I pay and bust my butt in school I am going to make sure it is something I will enjoy! Jobs come and go and yes we will take what we can get but a career for the rest of our life should be something we like...

I think the major reason people have jobs they hate or dislike is because that is all they can get. Maybe it is one of the few jobs they are qualified to do, or because they lack experience or education, that is all they can do. Or they might have gotten into the job because of the money & they don't want to leave it, even if they don't like it. I'm 22 & having a job I dislike is one of my biggest concerns about the future. My mother often suggests to me that I become a nurse, but I would hate to do it. I don't like having to be around people all the time, & I wouldn't want to touch people, especially if they might be sick. Ideally, I would get into a career that I love, but I'll even settle on getting a job I feel neutral about -- that is, I don't like it but I don't dislike it either.

I am not referring to jobs, I am referring to careers. When you have a choice and you have not finished school yet for it you should choose something you enjoy doing... There is no reason to go into something you hate! I am talking about someone who goes to college and can choose ANYTHING they want to do, why do something they cannot stand doing??? That is just a waste of time and money for college!!

I have known of lots of people who go into teaching for all the wrong reasons and honestly are not suited for it. They like having the summers and holidays off, they view it as a secure job. Usually there is a decent benefit package. Never mind the fact that the kids will drive you crazy and you cannot stand to be aroud them... just look at the pay package and days worked.

I personally think it is a terrible idea to go into any profession dealing with children that you don't like. It can effect the children which is not fair to them at all! It is horrible that people do that!

You are absolutely tight. One should not engage in a job that one doesn't like. In the long run it burns you out and can lead to serious health issues like hypertension and depression without realizing that its all job related. Enjoy what you do and it might add new lease to your life.

Yeah, going for a career that you know you don't like before you start is silly to me! Why waste your time and money? I don't understand it at all! A job is different, that is just a for now thing but a career is something you should enjoy for the rest of your life...

I think my kids had a few of these teachers! I remember going up to the school on a couple occastions wondering why this person is teaching school! I think some of them "think" they're going to like it and want to be teachers, and then find out this is not for them. Well, no one said it was going to a piece of cake. If you don't like it, OR, how WEIRD, you DON'T like kids, why are you in that field?????? Yes, it certainly IS terrible and makes it rough for the kids involved. I don't know anyone who ventured into a career that didn't like it. I do remember though many, many years ago (like 40 years or more), my father telling me that there was this guy who had a college education on a high profile job, and ended up driving a bus because he didn't like the other job that he wanted to make a career out of. At least he left, and ended up loving to drive the bus and meeting all those people. I guess it's just in the individual themselves, but I gave that guy tons of credit for doing that.

I have had a few like that as well and it is unfair in my opinion for anyone to be a teacher if they hate children! Your right, no one told them it would be easy and if you know you don't like kids you should NOT be a teacher! It seems like common sense to me but I guess not to everyone. Lol. Yeah, if you don't like a job then find another one don't make everyone else suffer for it! Lol.

A lot of people are motivated by money rather than by what they could actually achieve. I have a friend who is training to be a teacher just because it is an easy job to get in the country that I am living in at the moment. I wouldn't want to do this, because I would always want to be able to enjoy the job that I was doing. I don't earn all that much money for my job right now, but the good thing is that I know that I enjoy it and it doesn't raise my stress levels, and I would rather have no money and lots of enjoyment than the other way round.

Yeah it is sad to me. Here in this state though teachers don't really make a lot of money. I guess the reason is for the vacation time and benefits. I don't know... I would always want to enjoy my career. Exactly, the job I used to work at was not a lot of pay either but I enjoyed every minute I was there. That is worth more to me too! =)

I can understand working a part-time job you hate because it's not going to be your career. But to try to get a career that you have no interest in really surprises me. If you don't like kids then you definitely shouldn't have a career involved with them. It kind of reminds me of that show Beverly Hills Nannies. The one nanny's friend wanted to start nannying for the perks of the expensive families and she really didn't like children at all. I think you should do what you love and don't do something you hate.

I can understand that too but a career that you know you don't like? Why? If I had a choice in doing something the rest of my life, I would DEFINITELY make sure it was something I would LOVE! Why spend all of that money going through college if your just going to end up unhappy with your career? Makes NO sense to me at all. I agree, I would choose something I love to do.

I get to know one certain handyman who becomes more like friends now. I'm not sure if he hates what he is doing because he is really good at it and he has built quite a good reputation with his clients. But he is also a good cook and he always talks about how he loves cooking and some day having his own restaurant; so I often wonder if deep down he really wants to be a chef instead of a handyman...

That does happen with every day jobs, but a career that you know you don't like to start with is crazy to go for that in college! I would not waste my own time and money... Maybe one day he will be able to be a chef! That would be awesome. It does sound like that is what he would rather do...

people should be thankful they have a job, some dont have so they must treat their job like they love it with all their hearts. When you treat your job like this, your job will treat you like this as well.

I agree, especially in this economy people should be grateful for any job they can get. But to choose a career when you have the choice and you know your going to hate it, why do that? I don't understand it at all!

Because usually, people work only for them to make profit. Job for them is just literally a job. While others, work for passion. They choose their job to make earnings and because its their passion.

Choosing a career you know you will hate before you start is silly to me. We all have had jobs we don't like to make a living but not a career where we went to school and paid for it!

My father worked at a job for over 25 years that he hated and for one reason only to support his family. If he had a choice in the matter I am sure that he would have been doing something else but because he had a family with young children he did not have a choice. As for your friend that is a huge mistake on their part. They should choose a career that they enjoy all aspects of. I mean why would you want to be around kids all day if you cant stand them? Like a Doctor that hates the sight of blood why would you choose that career? Maybe your friend should see what happens to kids that are damaged by a teacher that hates kids. I used to have a teacher like that when I was a kid and because of her I learned to hate school at a very young age like 6 needless to say it did ruin my entire education experience. I just don't feel that person is being fair to the kids that they are going to teach or to them self. There are so many jobs out there why not choose one that you like to do.

Well to me a job you hate is different than going for a career you know before you start that you will not like. What is the point of that? I am sure it is mostly for the money aspect but I don't think that is fair to the children involved...Besides the fact that most teachers in this state don't make a lot of money like in other states... My husband has had plenty of jobs he could not stand and I get that, you do it for your family. Totally understandable! BUT a career is your choice, you don't HAVE to choose it. I just don't understand it and your right it could hurt the children's future!

I know a couple of people who got laid off from their jobs, and are now going into retail, but absolutely hate it. They just have no choice, as jobs are hard to come by. But for a young person embarking on a career, he or she should have it all figured out even before they leave school. So that they don't end up hating what they're doing.

There's actually a way. If she loves to teach but can't stand children, she could choose to be a college lecturer or at least a high school teacher. They should be easier to deal with. Unfortunately, not all people are lucky enough to have a job that match their passion. There is not much opportunity, and yet they need to live their life. While I can understand their feeling, it actually counterproductive if they keep hating their jobs. People need to change their point of view, so at least it may brings peace to their mind.
