My b/f has had a stomach virus. I have locked him away in a room and enter only with Lysol...but anyway..when the onslaught of his illness happened, I went to the pharmacy here to get something to help. There is a pharmacist there that is super nice and always watches out for people and make suggestions or answer questions when you ask. I trust him and that says a lot. I ask him and describe the symptoms, vomiting..etc. He says..well...Pepto Bismal might help a little but what will really help is motion sickness medicine. I just stood there a minute and I asked are you serious? He said yes and he came from behind the counter and handed me a chewable tablet form of motion sickness medicine. He said that since he was having trouble keeping stuff down to have him chew a tablet and see if it worked. Well..I got the Pepto too.. He was aggravated when I first brought it in but after a bit more misery, he tried it. Didn't throw up not one more time!!!!! Still didn't feel great..but much better. I was amazed..I actually doubted it too. Have you ever tried something when you were sick that you thought was silly and it worked? Ever had a medicine suggestion that was weird but you tried it?

For that particular ailment we use ginger, as in ginger ale, Vernor's is the best. It also works on motion sickness. We buy candied ginger in the grocery store and chew that for nausea, or motion sickness, or for arthritis pain or for a cough at bed time. Nothing surprises me, really. So was it Meclizine that the pharmacist recommended? That is what we use for vertigo, etc. At least before we knew about ginger.

I used to find it in the oriental foods section at the store, but now we get it in bags in the same place we get raisins. It is peeled, cut and dried and sugared a little. I tried to make my own from fresh ginger once and it was much more work than I wanted to do. My daughter finds it too "hot" and so she buys ginger/lemon tea. Stash makes a good one. The tea is very soothing and makes you feel warm all over. Meclizine will make me very sleepy but it does help. My brother took ginger when he and his wife went on a cruise last year, and did not get seasick at all. It did not make him sleepy either.

That was it. The chewable version. There was a little lady there working that followed me back before the pharmiscist that said she used a tablespoon of baking soda and water..that it tasted terrible but it worked for her. I had some baking soda at home so I thought we might try that if it didn't work. I'll have to remember that ginger...where and what form do you get it in for use GardenGerty?

I hope your b/f has a speedy recovery my friend, a stomach virus is never wanted, but especially before Christmas. When I had a stomach bug I was recommended kaolin and morphine, it was white stuff in a brown bottle, it tasted yukky, but boy did it settle my stomach. Sometimes when we are ill and are in pain we will try anything to get better. When I was young and had a bad cold, dad would always tell me to have a hot toddy, the taste of whisky was awful and it burnt the back of my throat but it did have a way of burning out the cold virus.

Sounds like that kaolin and morphine would rid one of most issues..lol. My grandmother used to make hot toddys when I was young too. I would go to jail for that now I guess. I do remember them helping though.

No but it makes sense that you use something like motion sickness pills. Since it does the trick for others who have motion sickness I bet it would be helpful for the flu...same symptons...good pharmacist!

I know! I was very surprised. I would have never thought of that. It, of course, didn't treat the illness itself..but it sure helped with one of the symptoms.

Where were you when everyone in my house had a stomach virus? That was just last week. I will have to keep that in mind for the next time it happens around here. (Hopefully that will not be in the near future!!) I don't normally experiment with medicine, but I know my sister will take Benadryl instead of Unisom when she can't sleep because they have the same active ingredient and Benadryl is so much cheaper.

Oh...I wish I had been sooner with this one for you. It didn't stop everything but it stopped the vomiting so I could get some liquids down him. Chewable tablets lilybug and it doesn't have to be the expensive stuff Dramamine. It can be the off brand as long as it has the same active ingredient. Benedryl has always made me super sleepy when I have taken it. I can see why she would use it if she has trouble sleeping.

Actually I was planning to make money on this discovery of mine. Oranges help one lose weight a hundred percent. I experimented with it and bingo it has worked for me. Don't tell any one. I will be charging people soon to part with this information!

Actually, oranges helped me lose my weight, too, after giving birth. I practically lost 30 lbs in 2 weeks. I was not really aware of what the oranges can do. I just happen to like to eat them that time. My mom even told me that I was kinda weird to be eating as much fruits after giving birth when I should have been eating them while I was pregnant.

I know I have heard of these pills being good for a lot of things. The only problem is around here, you need a prescription. I know I have had these around before to help when I get migraines, and might have to remember to ask for another prescription again. I am sure he is feeling a lot better now, but Glad to hear you found something that was able to help some.

About all we can do for these viruses is to treat the symptoms. I remember when I was young and would get the winter illnesses. My mom would fix me honey, lemon and whiskey and it really helped me. I would sleep like a baby. When I woke up I felt better. I thought it was nutty but it worked.

That is so helpful of the pharmacist. Sometimes you need to think outside the box. The medicine may contain an ingredient that does help to settle the stomach and reduce the vomiting. I can't recall trying something like that but I think there was one time when I had the flu and my mom told me to sniff on eucalyptus essential oil and it does help with my blocked nose.

Thanks for sharing. I really like the pharmacist at the store I go to. He is always willing to help out and looks out for medicine mixtures that might not be the greatest thing. Doctors make mistakes too I guess.

I am not that experimental with medicine coz I am afraid I'd kill myself if I wouldn't take a medicine that I really need. The Pepto could somehow help in preventing him from throwing up, but I am not sure if it has taken out the bacteria that is causing him to vomit. You might as well take him to the doctor to be sure that he is fine.

He is actually doing alot better. He took that motion sickness medicine and didn't throw up anymore! I was surprised. I am pretty funny about medicine too Jenny. My daughter used to have to take that motion sickness medicine when she was younger and riding the bus. She would get sick at her stomach and get a headache if she didn't take it. Since I had seen it before, I knew it was safe. Thanks for responding!

I know throwing up is not fun but, if the body has some sickness and needs to throw up, I would let it throw up. Maybe some viruses and bad chemicals will come out. The body has its immune system and it fights the viruses. It takes time and the body needs some extra sleep for the effort. Plus, who knows what a doctor would say about it? Maybe a special treatment would be required and the medicine you gave was not the right thing ? I suggest healthy and light food like vegetables, fruits and some rest. My instant medicine for the blockage in the nose will be a lemon. As soon as I suck the lemon, my nose gets free and the snot goes away for some moments.

There are always a ton of breakthroughs it seems. I am always very cautious of the new stuff. I usually like for something to be out for a while before using it myself.

That is a good point stringer. If it were food poisoning or something like that...it would be bad to stop the throwing up. It didn't stop everything as far as passage goes but it did stop him from throwing up. That lemon idea is interesting..I'll have to try that.

Thanks, JenInTN, I like your discussion. We have to be aware of health solution and think carefully before we try them. We also better learn as much as we can because, information keeps accumulated with more and more experiments research.

Hi. I have gone your story. That you obtained medicine from pharmacist, who may be qualified in pharmacy and medicine. Therefore whatever he must have suggested is the perfect medicine on the symptoms you have stated. Once I had a cough. I took medicine after consulting physician. but no progress. Then I went to on pharmacist. looking my heavy cough he gave me some tablets and told me to take it. I took it as he directed. To my surprise within two day I got complete relief. Even today as and when I get troubled with cough I take the said medicine.

I would have never thought of it either but it certainly brought him some relief and allowed him to keep some vital nutrients down. I was really worried about him becoming dehydrated and you know how they are with you when you go in with a virus. They say to just hang in there and let it run its course anyway. Merry Christmas

That is a remedy to keep in mind, it sounds harmless at any rate and it worked. Soem years ago I had a headache and felt a little sick when I was on holiday in Greece. I was given what looked like a concoction made from boiled daisies. It tasted OK and it did the trick. Later on I realised that the flowers were camomile which is good for the stomach. So it was not a weird idea after all.

It probably seemed pretty weird at the time presented as a concoction though That camomile is a very common flower for ailments. I have always saw it in processed form though..never the real deal. Thanks for sharing.

Sometimes we feel bad because we think bad , we think negative. It is not cause by physiological problem but it is more of psychological problem. We worried for things that didn't happen yet, thus giving problem .

That is true Angelpink..I find it fascinating how strong the human mind is. Negativity can certainly make you feel bad. My b/f can be negative on occasion compared to me but I think this was truly a case of a nasty virus. The motion sickness did work for his throwing up though. Thanks for the input.

When I was 12 years old I suffered from heavy cough. I had been to physician, took medicine as he prescribed. but, no progress. The I had been to one our known pharmacist's medicine shop. Looking my condition, he gave me some 4 tablets and told me to take twice a day. To my surprise within two days I got complete relief from cough, which I could get from medicine prescribed by physician. Therefore the medicine given by pharmacist can not be wired medicine. Because he is graduate in pharmacy.
