Man Ticketed For Laughing Too Loud

United States

A Long Island man gets ticketed for laughing too loud in the comfort of his own home! Now, I see nothing wrong with laughing in your own home. If it's true that the neighbor was making fun of this gentleman because of his disability, then why weren't charges made against him? Wouldn't that be considered bullying? So what if the guy has a sense of humor, some times that is what we need more in our lives. Maybe the gentleman figured there was no need to fight the neighbor, because he turned him in for laughing too loud, so he just laughed it off! I don't think the man should have been ticketed just for laughing too loud! What are your thoughts? You can read the details at this link and decide for yourself www.nypost.com/p/news/local/it_laughable_sEXykGNgabFDCNlGvdXuBK

That's absolutely ridiculous and the judge should throw it out of court AND issue some sort of punishment for the neighbor who complained for being a nuisance to the court. So we're wasting our time of these petty things instead of dealing with cases that really need hearing. How disgusting. I love to hear people laughing. I admire the man who was laughing. Would his neighbor rather he respond with violence as so many people do? He should count his blessings that the object of his scorn and derision has a sense of humor and is not violent. I'm willing to bet that at least half the population would punch that man out instead of laughing.

I too find it completely backward and completely disgusting. When someone is not allowed to laugh within their home, what is the world coming to? Shouldn't we have the "persuit of happiness" in the USA at least, yes we do! So that was a constitutional right that I see was broken and ignored and thrown out of a court case. It will only get worse with things like this happening.

It is so silly the man was ticketed for laughing loudly in his own home. The man is disabled so he might have a strange laugh. I consider it to be bullying. Good luck to the disabled gentleman. I tell my children be happy and laugh at funny jokes.

I agree with you maximax8 maybe if more people were happier we'd have less health problems and less crime. Why I say less crime, well, at least this gentlemen didn't beat his neighbor up for getting him a ticket for laughing too loud! Thanks for responding!

hbiu stutgodee I think that so appalling an sickening as that poor man as enough problems on his plate without his neighbor making constant fun of him. To indict anyone for laughing is stupid in my line of thinking. If the neighbor had kept his own trap shut and not heckled the poor man nothing would have happened. I think the laws there are totally all screwed up.I really think they should be ashamed f or making constant fun f him myself.

It is a sickening thing. Why not let the man enjoy himself and his life with some laughter, albeit a little loudly? Its his home not a public place like a library. I would understand perhaps in a place like a church or library, but your home?! No way...

I totally agree with you Hatley! In my opinion the neighbor is bullying him and there is no need for bullying him. This man has nothing to cause any harm in any one, however, the neighbor that has a problem with his laughing is the one that is causing problems. Good thing it wasn't me that got the ticket, because I would have done more than laugh at him! Thanks for responding!

I agree with you echoforever, it would be different maybe if he was being too loud in a public place, but still it was just laughing and he was in his "own" home. May be the neighbor was stalking him to get him in trouble?

Wow! That's really dumb to arrest someone to laugh when they are being made fun of. The other person should be arrested for calling him a retard. That's hate. This is what clogs up the court systems. Nonsense.

I would call it a hate crime but I bet the law wouldn't. It seems its only a hate crime unless a protected group like gay bashing or race bashing. There should be protection for people with disabilities. The man laughing should prosecute the bully.

It's just a shame. Yes? I would agree with discrimination for sure. The next time that bully starts taunting him he should press charges. I'm happy that he has such a happy heart about him and is not made to feel less of a man by that bully.

It is nonsense because something more should have been done concerning that hate you mention. Hate crime? Perhaps. And it was thrown out.

I have to tell you, my 16 year old daughter had a teacher last year who told her she thought she (my daughter) had a disease because she laughs too much. She was even sent out into the hall a few times. I told her to have that teacher call me because I think laughing a lot is a whole lot better than the opposite. It's the BEST way to go through life. Honestly, I think a lot of people are jealous of happy people.

My girls and I do a lot of laughing together. We can find the smallest thing to laugh at. I love it when they're in that kind of a mood. Love it even more that these girls (almost 17 and almost 20) are so close and have such fun together. I can hear them laughing from anywhere in the house and it warms my heart.

I agree with you patgalca, some people aren't happy unless they're making some one else's life miserable. I hope your daughter still laughs at things she finds humor in. That could be very depressing to hear from some one that you can't laugh or you laugh to much. That should be a lawsuit for mental anguish, not being able to laugh. Thanks for responding!

That sound insane , why would police waste their time ticketing someone for laughing especially in their own home . Those people are not standing up against real crime but they want to pick on someone that is laughing in his own home . Those police and the neighbors should be the ones getting ticket .

I agree with you on this one silver, the cop and the neighbor should get a ticket the neighbor for wasting the cops time and sending him out there for such a crazy ticket and the cop a ticket for giving such a ridiculous ticket.

This is the first I'm hearing about this and I can't believe you can now get a summons for laughing in your own home. What is this world coming too? I think its a crime that the guy who called the cops can get away with calling this guy a retard and other names. What a shame that he has a disablity and can't live in peace with his mom. The cops were totally wrong in giving this guy two summons for laughing at 250 dollars each. That is outrageous and I hope the whole thing is dropped.

Wow, a ticket for laughing too loudly? Now I'm scared to laugh who knows I may get a ticket. That is ridiculous would they have rather the two neighbors get into a fight instead? What was this cop thinking to give him a ticket. I really haven't heard of any silly laws or people getting silly tickets for such as this but this just takes the cake. What next a ticket for belching too loudly in your home? Oops better be careful a cop might be down the street.

Those people in that community must be stunned , if they cant laugh too loud anymore , without the fear someone will report them . Loud belching defiantly may fall in the the ticket category

I went and read the above article and it is really an extra ordinary story. Singapore is famous for 'fine' country and they summon many many things. They even banned chewing gum in the country. Holding a mobile phone while in a moving car, the driver can be compounded too. Surprisingly, this thing can happen in US. I think with the economy situation globally, people are stressful and easily agitated. I believe there are better way to solve the issue.

I totally agree with you Iriene people are very stressed and agitated now days and instead of laughing things off(which laughter has been proven to be good for your health)a person is ticketed for it? What is the world coming to? Thanks for responding!

Is there anything that a person cannot be ticketed for these days? Seriously, I don't think that a person should ever be ticketed because of the fact that they had a really good belly laugh. Just as there are people in this world that are soft spoken, there are also people that are very boysterous. People should never be allowed to be punished because of their natural disposition.

Thanks for sharing the link, i really feel sad, the person is disabled, second-he laughed in his home, he did not do any think wrong; so why should he be ticketed?
• United States
8 Mar 13
Thanks for responding Professor, that's my point why was he ticketed, not given a warning? Why was the neighbor "picking" on this gentleman, was he afraid if he picked on some one that didn't have a disability he might get beaten up? Some people are very rude!

I think the equitable thing to do would be for the disabled man to file harrassment charges against the neighbor, both should be found guilty, and they should share a cell for thirty days. Maybe then they would learn how to understand each other.

I like that idea laciice charge them both and put them in a cell together! I remember growing up and if we said hateful things to our brothers and sisters we had to hug them. Those two should have to hug each other for a while too!

This situation does seem to be a bit extreme. Your home should be your refuge and the place you can feel safe to be yourself. I can not see how laughing too loud in your own home can be something to receive a ticket for. It does seem absurb and a waste of ticketer's time.

When I look at this article with its headline, one purpose jumps to mind. Like many comments are reflected here, this article is somehow meant to shock, irritate, and provoke the feelings of disgust to authority. Some people may think "What is wrong with this country?" or "What is wrong with our justice system"? or something alike. If I try to look closer, there are more than one way to look at this: - The detective that issued two tickets should be the one that get charged for inefficiency. It seems like this detective does not have anything to do. So, this detective might as well charged this guy for 'disturbing the peace'. The person could have act as a mediator to parties involved. We do not know whether this guy ever got warning. The article did not mention anything about it. Still, there is other better thing to pursue, instead of just wasting resources. Maybe, this county does not have enough case on their workload. Who knows! - The laughing out loud guy is also to blame. Let this be a lesson, regardless of the outcome. It is mentioned that he has disability, but we don't know if his disability has to do with not being able to exercise consideration with his neighbors or his environment. Can he turn his tone down? Can he try to avoid situations that would make him laugh during certain period of time? Someone should try to help him out including his mother.

Nothing new STOUT jodee- I have been charged many times for doing the same. People do not see my sense of humor but feel that laughing is not for sane people. I stopped laughing and ignored community which like to see sycophants but not simple humor loving guys. I am sure I am going off the way in present contest but that was the only way I could express my views. Cheers.
