Finding Money

I was wondering what people think about finding money. I was on a shopping street recently and there were six other people walking around me. I saw a £20 note lying on the street and picked it up. I wondered if I should have shouted out to everybody, asking if they'd lost any money but then I changed my mind because I thought everyone might try and claim it. Now I feel a bit guilty that I didn't ask anyone.

Unfortunately, if you had shouted, at least one person would have claimed it was theirs even though it wasn't. You can always hand it in to the police, and they can wait to see if someone claims it.

i agree that others might be quick to claim it. if you feel bad about taking it, donate the amount somewhere or buy something for someone that they really need or would help them a lot.

@MALUSE thanks. some like donating to church and charities, but others prefer helping directly and in practical ways.

You don't know if the person that drop the money was still around the area. If you saw someone drop it and then you can give it back.

@redurnet. You did the right thing to pick it up and not say nothing because anyone could of lie and said it was their and the person who drop it probably not around that area no more.

I didn't see anyone drop it, it was just lying on the ground. I think that if you do see someone drop money and pocket the money it could be considered to be theft.

Each one of us has to live with our own conscience, so no one else can decide for us what we should or should not do.

I wouldnt feel guilty. Lol good for you! I havent ever foubd that much, at most a quarter or dime or penny. Some guy in my city qas recently on the news because he returned a bag of $7000 he found to the police station. Apparently it was supposedly a guy who was putting a down payment on a house who lost it. Not sure why the guy didnt use a check or money order though!

It makes us feel bad when reminded of how the one who lost it might have needed it so badly...

People in America tend to keep loose bills in their pockets and then when retrieving one bill others fall out unseen. If they need money they shouldn't keep their money in their pockets but in a wallet or something similar so they know what is coming and going. I figured this out years ago.

In a situation like that I might keep it too, or like you wondered at least ask people to check their pockets. But, probably the person that lost it was long gone. I wrote a post similar to this about a year ago because someone found a hundred dollar bill in a purse they decided to buy. If I found a larger bill, I'd let the authorities in the city know, but not share with them the amount. Then if they had someone call and ask them, I'd hand it over unless too much time had passed by then. I've never heard of a shopping street before. I imagine it's a location with an outside shopping mall type thing?

That's interesting, thanks. Yeah, I think I would definitely hand any larger amounts into the police. I know that not everyone would do this though.

I found £35 in the alley next to a Waitrose supermarket last year and gave it in to their management. It seemed likely that one of their shoppers had dropped it. I often spot coins lying in the street and am torn between the old 'Find a penny...' adage and the possibility that if it stays on the pavement in an area with homeless people then maybe one of them might find them.

That's an interesting way to think about lost change and a good idea.

I'd like to think that if I lost money someone would hand it in somewhere. But this doesn't happen very often! I found someone purse a while a go and did everything in my power to get it back to them. They were very thankful x

I have found a couple of wallets before and handed them in to police or to lost and found. I used to work in an entertainment venue and I found so many notes I lost count. I'd always hand them into the work office (unlike many of my fellow workmates) but nobody ever claimed the cash because I guess they never realised they'd even lost it.
