People Brutally Killing and Eating Stray Dogs

Philippines
February 9, 2007 9:35am CST
I just saw on tv this evening (Philippine time) stray dogs being brutally killed and eaten by some people. They mercilessly kill these man’s best friends by hitting them on the head with hard wood or dig a hole in their necks using knives. Poor dogs., they were already homeless, wandering in the streets trying to survive. I think this is not only happening in the Philippines but it is a worldwide phenomenon. I don’t know with these kind of people who would kill stray dogs or even steal dogs in order to eat them, or to sell them. I am personally against killing dogs for food. I love dogs. They are good companions. What is your stand on this issue? Do you eat dog meat?

yah its a common practice in baguio city and many other provincial towns. i think its a natural phenomenon, back in our barbaric days, our ancestors used to eat any animals they can hunt. how come there is a pity for dogs but none for the thousand pigs and chicken getting slaughtered everyday. its true that killing/eating a dog is morally incorrect, but still morals is directly proportional to culture. it may be wrong for others, but just a norm for some..

I know this sounds really, really evil...but what do we do here in the United States (and other so called first world countries). We think dogs and cats are "too cute" and baby kittens and puppies are "oh so sweeet" so we breed our pets, people will get puppies and kittens because they're "cute", get rid of them when they turn into dogs and cats. Not to mention the evils of puppy mills, breeding farms and horrific conditions because people HAVE to have a certain kind of purebred pet. 20 million animals are in humane societies in the United States alone, and most of those animals are put down. I'm not disagreeing with what your saying, but I'm just saying that's almost like the pot calling the kettle black. Who are we to condemn what other people do when we kill many more animals per year? And before someone says "oh, but we do it humanely"...have you ever seen some of these homemade gas shelters some of these humane societies use? It's deplorable.

Ewwww, that is horrid, I too can't understand why people would want to do that? Are the people that desperate and hungry to resort to the killing of an innocent creature? No I definitely don't eat dog meat, although I sometimes wonder about some fast food restaurants as to the authenticity of their meat, that's why I never eat in those places. It is very cruel and barbaric.

i don't think these people are killing dogs because they are dying of hunger. they can feed themselves but they just like eating dog meat. sometimes they sell dog meat to other people. They kill at least 5 dogs a day, and the killing is brutally done.

i saw it on the news too and i was about to post a discussion on it but you beat me too it. so im posting a response instead. i am against eating dog meat but the philippines does have a problem with too many stray dogs and its dangerous sometimes because some stray dogs just bite you out of the blue. its a public hazzard. i wish the government would do something about taking care of stray dogs. but only the private sector for animals rights are the only people who seem to care. the people who eat the stray dogs think that they are doing society a favor.

I have 3 dogs, and the thought of eating one of my best friends for dinner, makes me sick. I can't judge people of other cultures in other countries though. I don't understand their motivation for doing this. I don't know if they're starving, and need the food to survive. Maybe I wouldn't be so freaked about this practice. It upsets me, and I'm against it. I wish we lived in a world where it wasn't necessary for some people to eat dogs. Would I eat dog meat?? No way!!

yes some people eat dogs because they are starving. but not all people eat dogs because of these. some just eat dog meats because they like it and its less expensive. but how they kill this poor dogs is so brutal.

maximo primo, its not really about eating that is bad per se. What i am saying is that these people KILL DOGS BRUTALLY. In case you are not aware of this, there are laws in our country and i bet in your country too which prohibit the brutal killing of animals, cows, chickens, pigs, etc, dogs included, even it be for food. There are laws which protect animals (animal rights).

So eating dogs is bad, but eating cows is good? I fail to see the logic in that, cows and dogs are both animals.

I think this is absolutely horrible and do not know why people would want to do something like this to man's best friend and beautiful animals. This is very sad and shocking and hope that they can find a way to stop this abuse on dogs. I love dogs very much myself and would never kill a dog or eat dog meat.

That is horrible, I just cannot see anyone eating a dog. My goodness is it so bad over there that they have to resort to eating dogs. Although I think eating dogs are wrong, if a human being only means of survival is eating the dog I think its okay.

I think this is horrible but what I think is more horrible is why these people are in the possition to do this. Are they starving? Are they just cruel? Why are these dogs strays? Why isn't someone doing something to feed these people and find homes for the dogs? True story - 25 years ago in Texas, US there was a lot of this going on. I had 2 afghan hounds stolen from my back yard while at work. The male returned several days later but we never found the female. I ended up having to get rid of the male because whatever happened "freaked" him out and he turned very very mean. We suspect the people who stole the couple were going to do just as you said but Freddie (Sir Fredrick) managed to get away.

It's a cultural thing, and even if you value dogs as your friends you should respect that not everyone thinks that dogs are man's best friend. I was watching a show on how Africans eat monkeys. Now, I'm more upset about that because monkeys, chimps, bonobos, etc have higher order intelligence that is more similar to our own than that of any dogs. We have very simple criteria when it comes to animals: Food, or not food. Your price and mileage may vary.

In America, I don't know of ANYONE who would eat a dog. Personally, If a person is starving so badly to need to eat a dog, and the dog is starving and unable to find food or find companionship, I'd rather see the person survive. When it's for fun, that's a totally different story and unacceptable. But if it's the only way to get food on the table for desperate people. It makes me sad, not angry.

Then what must the Indians think of us for killing the most holy animal: the cow. It's all about how you see dogs (or animals in general): but in the end it's an animal like any other. Why is it correct to eat cows, but not correct to eat dogs? And imagine you're hungry, wandering the streets. You see this cow on the street, and you know it's not owned by anybody. Wouldn't you at least try to kill and eat it? It's exactly the same as killing dogs. People eat worse things when they're hungry.

the funny think is that this is not that surprising. i was always told from my reletives that eating dog was a tradition in the philipines. actually, when you hear the word "Black Dog" you think of filipinos. i know that its considered a 3rd world country and who am i to question the tradidtion of some countries. but honestly, when i first read the post topic i was like "and this is surprising because.." and just started laughting. don't get me wrong, i've never eaten dog and probably never would. i love dogs. but i'm not going to insult someones way of life. its just like eating monkey brains, worms, bugs and so fourth...in those regions its considered a good food either way. in life, everyone is meant to be eaten by someone else, thats how the food chain is. and humans so happen to be at the top. we can eat anything we really want to. from there, its just the taste that we have.

For me it's unacceptable - killing for fun. eating dogs is not normal unless they eat them because of starve. Same I think about hunting, this is just killing for fun...

Umm.. excuse me, but it is NOT a tradition in the Philippines. Only a small portion of filipinos eat dog meat, and most of us will not even try to see what it tastes like. Our country may be considered to be third world, but most of us that reside here are not.

My stomach turns sour just thinking of a dying dog. The most exotic I ever got was when I ate a locally raised goose! Dogmeat eating is a dying practice in the provinces but I would have to admit that the urban poor population is also guilty of this illegal practice (they'd rather eat dog meat that die of starvation)

Oh my. I couldn't eat dog, I don't think. I love dogs. I could see killing a stray dog if it was vicious or something, but I just could not take it upon myself to eat it. Ewwwwww. We have taken in several stray dogs around here until we found them a new home. We have also had some strays put to sleep because they were to vicious and had the mange or something.

vicious dogs should be put to sleep because they are threat to the society, but dogs in good condition shouldnt be killed or should i say massacred brutally. this is what is happening. 5 dogs or more being killed in a day.

Unfortunately you are right this does not just happen in the philippines and yes dogs make good pets but so do cats. However anytime you live in an area that has a very high population and the majority of people are so poor that meat is a delicacy then you eat what you can. In China the cats are victims in Africa the specialty is rats. If we could truly solve world hunger then it would not make a difference but out concern with a war that was started from rumors is continuously taking money that could well be used to help the hungry all over the world. Why can't we make love not war? It's just like here when we have an abundance of something and there is an imperative need to be filled your consciousness tends to say hey this might not be so bad. Remember when women and kids and elders were safe from crime? Well the lack of jobs and the threat of hunger now makes them targets too and that's a shame because I like women and children and elders they make good friends and relatives.

I don't eat dog meat so It is not my problem. There is nothing we can do If people continue to eat them. Some parts of the world eat snakes, kangaroos and rabbits. They could be pets too, but humans are partly carnivorous. So eating meat is not an eyebrow raising phenomenon, if you ask me. As long as I don't any potential pets in sight, I don't feel any guilt at all.
