Do you cut the crust off your bread when you make sandwiches?

I've always been taught that the bread crust is "good for you" and usually I eat mine, but sometimes I just don't feel like it. Maybe I am part raccoon, but sometimes the outer part of the bread is just to dry for my taste. My husband, on the other hand, loves the crust on his bread. He will eat it even without butter or mayonnaise. Fortunately he always takes the ends of a loaf of bread and leaves me the center. Sometime I used to cut off all the crust from my half of a loaf of bread and save it to make stuffing. I don't know why we didn't think of this before, but recently we started working together even better on this...now when I make us a sandwich to share, instead of cutting it in half I cut out the inside and give him the outside. At first I hated to do this because I thought he was just being polite, but he really prefers that part of the sandwich! How about you? Do you think the bread crust tastes good? If you don't want the crust do you save it to make something else, or give it to another family member, or do you throw it away?

I think there has been only one occasion when I cut the crust off sandwhiches and that was because it was for a party tray. I think I likely just threw the crust away or else my dad ate them, lol. When I make a sandwich for myself, which is rare, I leave the crust on. i don't mind it and if it is a good quality bread, it is actually a nice additive to taste in the sandwich. I love the idea of cutting out the center. How brilliant. See, i just don't eat bread as a rule right now due to a diet I have been on since before Christmas. Over all though, I think crust is great, as long as it is not too hard. When I used to get whole loaves of bread, uncut or otherwise, I always took pieces beyond the crust, always keeping the crust covering the next slice of bread. This way, it keeps the moisture in, I think anyway.

Awesome idea, I have a magic bullet too. I love how you not only make your own bread but that you grind your own flour also. Good for you! Home baked bread is sooooooo delicious. The smell is heavenly. I love a nice thick slice of home baked bread, still a bit warm with butter and some made blackberry jam or strawberry. Ye-um! It as been ages. We used to make bread, buns, dough too. I can still smell the cinnamon raisin buns made with whole wheat flour, always. My sister and I used to do that and must again soon. We spoke of this a couple months ago. A must do here soon, my mouth is now watering. Thanks for your comment.

I am right now eating one of my home made 9 grain tortillas with cheese melted over the top! I like butter on bread, but jams and jellies I mostly enjoy in a smoothie ;-)

I don't eat a lot of bread either, although I do make my own, and my own tortillas and bread sticks and pizza dough, all with whole grain flour. I grind the flour fresh from flaked grain (groats) in the Magic Bullet Blender as used.

Good answer. I make the sandwich first and then cut the middle out for me and give the rest to my nice husband who likes the crusty part best.

I like the crusts, and some studies even indicate that it helps prevent cancer. Of course next week that will change.I would not waste the crust, though, if I did not eat it I would put it in stuffing or grind it up to make 'bread crumbs' for casseroles, etc.

Yeah, I eat the crusts, unless I'm making watercress sandwiches... I cut the crusts off of those because because they are 'tea sandwiches' and supposed to be dainty, hehehe. When I do that I feed the crusts to our chickens. The only bread I like anymore is pumpernickle, rye, sourdough, and Tandoori flat bread... my new favorite!!

We had so much watercress this summer because Whole Foods had the live stuff on sale in the produce department and I put it in an ice cube bin with some plant nutrients, water and an air stone bubbling underneath and it grew faster than we could eat it. I had tried growing it once before without much sucess, but that was before I learned a bit about hydroponic growing. What did you put in your dainty tea sandwiches besides watercress? Cream cheese? Olives? Did you use mayonnaise?

I have only used butter, but cream cheese sounds really good! I'll have to give that a try!

Hi, drannhh. Yes, I will eat the crust off of the bread. But if I notice that the bread is very dry around the edges, I will not eat the crust at all. I will throw the bread away.

Hello cream97. Is that avatar an impatiens and if so did you grow it in your garden? A gopher ate 2 of my impatiens plants down to the dirt, flowers and all, along with a forget-me-not, some larkspur, half a tomato, a jalapeno, and all of my red beans. He will not get any of my bread crusts. His days are numbered!

I know this was posted a year ago... but I still want it known that I looOoove bread crust. Especially when you make a toast, I like how crunchy it gets. Sometimes, I just tear the crust off and take small bites off it to enjoy the whole eating process even longer. And I used to dip them in coke (the soda) and eat them soggy. But I'm drinking less soda now so that only happens once in a while. Or I dip the crust in melted cheese. Crust is a must!

Thank you so much for reviving an old discussion, and with a new point of view. Yes, the crusts are really good when dipped in something. My dip of choice is hot cocoa, but here in the desert it seldom gets cold enough to be hot chocolate weather. Mmmmm, melted cheese. I hardly ever drink soda.

I forgot hot chocolate and coffee! I find myself looking through myLot friends' old discussions because, well, I'd rather not say, but I think you get the idea. I hope. Goodnight!

drannhh I quite like the crust when grilled (if you are talking about normal breads). Otherwise I do not like crusts of raw breads much. However, I do eat it for my mother always told that its good for health. Now, when I prepare sandwiches for my nieces I preserve the crusts for preparing minced meat balls.

My mum always told me that too, but in truth I don't think the crust is any healthier than the rest of the bread, unless it is full of seeds. That is different. I love the crust when it is grilled, too, especially with pesto garlic butter. Mmmmm, Romano cheese. Droool.

It mainly depends of the brand of bread... there are certain brands where the crust taste very delicious... so eat everything... but for certain brands... the crust are not soft or are too dry... i immediately remove them... and they just end up in the trash can... but for sure... for all types of pizza bread... i don't eat the outer crust...

If I couldn't pawn them off onto hubby who loves the crust bests (!) I would probably use them up in stuffing or maybe even make bread pudding. Of course the crusts would work OK for bread crumbs in meatloaf. I agree that some brands have a better crust than others!

No I don't cut the crust off but I tend to have a habit to eat it first before the center. I like food having a kind of raw taste and the crust tastes like that to me, personally, I quite like eating them.

When I do eat the crust I tend to eat it first too, not because I like it best, but because I save the best for last, although some kinds of bread have delicious crust. I just don't like it if it is dry.

I don't cut the crust off. but i have something in common with you - my husband also loves the crust! the sliced bread we purchase comes with brown ends on two sides. so he loves to eat the 'ends'. so i save them for him. i still eat the crust of each individual slice. and sometimes they are nice and crunchy after they are toasted. but i guess hotels and the like cut the crust off to look more professional. i think it's quite a waste unless they recycle the crusts as pet food or something.

Too kewl. I love Quiznos sandwiches but I get so annoyed when they cut the ends off and save them to feed the birds. Their whole wheat bread is so yummy and I paid for the sandwich so I think it is wrong for them to give the crusts away. Not that I don't like birds, but I think the birds would rather eat seeds. But that is why we have been going to Subway instead!

For myself, I don't, but for the kids - to get them to eat meat sandwiches, I do. However, instead of just cutting the crusts off, I use a cookie cutter and that gives a fun shape, and the entire inside of bread and no crust and they eat it up! Their favorite is a gingerbread boy shape! Don't even have to encourage them to eat, they just do!

Ah, the heels are hubby's favorite which is a good thing for me for except on the Quiznos sandwiches, I just will not eat them. Sometimes I eat the top crust and give hubby the bottom. I eat the tops off his muffins too on occasion. Thanks for stopping!

My dad was a mailman and when we didn't want to eat our crust he would say, "I walked as far to buy the middle as I did to buy the crust." So, we ate the crust, I like it because it gives the sandwich a border. My kids will eat it and dip it in ranch or their Kool-Aid. I've seen these lazy Smuckers sandwiches called "Crustables" at the market. Its for lazy kids who don't want to eat the crust from a PB&J, I about flipped, we had a friend who would buy them for their spoiled little kid. $3.29 for a sandwich without crust, good thing he wasn't my kid, he would be paying me to grocery shop for his little butt.

Well, when I was a kid we couldn't afford anything like that, but in truth what we did eat sounds a lot healthier. Hubby's childhood friend had a mom who used to buy him a Cream Puff from the "roach coach" every day after school, but that kid never amounted to anything. He also never shared his cream puff with hubby.

I have always eaten the crust and never thought about cutting the crust off the bread or sandwich. I like the taste of the crust too. I seems like a wast to cut it ff, but since you use it for something else i guess thats not a waste. I will save the heels for bread crumb of for dressing or stuffing.

Nopers it is not a waste when hubby is ready and willing to eat it. I don't like the heels in my stuffing either, lol, but I put them in because hubby does.

I used too, as a child I didn't like it and the taste was so horrible. I don't where, between those stages it changed but I found it much nicer especially with certain brands and where I hated the taste, I grew to enjoy with certain sandwitches. One thing I want my son to pick up, is we should try things before repelling ourselfs from it. Personally I think quite a few people tend to cut it off because it's harder, I know many around me who do and have never tasted it. ~Joey

Yeah that's true. Bread here seems to change all the time, so I know exactly what your saying. There's only one type of bread that doesn't change and thats a supermarkets "home" brand and the crust I'd say is one of the better things about it. ~Joey

Excellent response. I do eat mine quite often actually, and for the same reason. One never knows when one's taste will change, and the better the loaf of bread, of course the better the crust!

nice that the two of you can work together on a sandwich that way :) I eat hardy breads and really do enjoy the crust as part of the bread. on homemade breads the favored part, and the part that is always begged for from everyone, is the heal - and that is primarily crust...

I don't crust my bread off for I like the taste of the crust in the sides. Plus, it holds up the bread easier and it looks good. Specially if the filling is rather too saucy, it's good to have crust still because it keeps the insides in. And the crust don't absorb sauce all too well. In short, crusts helps the bread to hold itself together. So I like them and I don't cut them off.
