Okay Another Religious Issue~~ About Buddhism And Reincarnation email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (11581)   ranked 42 out of 9,679 in religion2 years ago

Now anyone of any faith can jump into this discussion. It has to do with the concept of reincarnation.
I don't know why, but ever since I can remember I've ALWAYS believed in the idea of reincarnation...from earliest memory (uh, maybe from a past life? LOL) As I've mentioned various times I was raised in a Christian background--sum total~~my father was Methodist, my mother Catholic, I was baptized Catholic, confirmed Protestant, followed many of the principles of Unity and Science of Mind...studied a bit of Buddhism, Hinduism, and on and on...While not completely abandoning my Christian concepts I'm an openly admitted pagan/wiccan. Gee, have I confused you all?

So like I said, ever since I can remember have always believed in reincarnation even though, the concept of reincarnation doesn't exist in the dogma of Christianity...however of course is a belief in Buddhism and Hinduism--and I might add most of us on the pagan/wiccan path believe in reincarnation.

Now in fairly recent years, many Westerners have come to accept the idea of reincarnation...even Christians...But here's what I don't get and got me going here

I came across a discussion about reincarnation that got me going a bit ballistic as one responder said that the ONLY way one can reincarnate is to achieve Buddhahood....so like in other words, only Buddhists can reincarnate and only after Buddhahood or enlightenment??

That rattled me as this almost sounds like the same narrow mindedness as Christians who follow a certain sect of Christianity and believe that only THEY go to heaven.

Like I said..I have read up on Buddhism..but gee did I miss something??..is it true as far as the Buddhist religion is concerned that they believe only THEY can reincarnate--What about the rest of us who do believe in reincarnation??...not all of us will attain "Buddhahood" or the same "enlightenment" strictly from a Buddhist viewpoint.

What are your views about reincarnation? Believe it or not? If you do believe in reincarnation, does it kind of rattle your nails that this one person seem to suggest only those who attain Buddhahood can reincarnate?

As you've probably gathered from previous discussions we've had, particularly the one about the "butterfly spirit", yes, I believe in reincarnation.

It's not only the butterfly spirit, I have had certain "experiences", in particular places I've been drawn to, of having belonged there... having been there before, and I certainly have a close connection with several spirits. So, my belief in reincarnation is strong. The confirmation is all there, my friend, in nature's Wheel of the Year... we are no different. Our life, death and rebirth turns a circle, as depicted by Nature's yearly cycle, to my mind. We are born, live our life through lessons put in front of us, and all the while, our body ages, but our spirit doesn't, it just becomes wiser. Then, when our body gives up, our spirit goes on to the Otherworld, The Summerland, Valhalla, whichever you like to call it, where it rests, recharges on the lessons learned and then, when the time comes, is reborn into another body, in order to learn higher lessons of life.

Buddhists, Christians, Catholics, Pagans, whichever religion or tradition you wish to point to, are the same. Nobody is perfect, and to my beliefs, nobody is judged as to whether they are reborn or not. As you say, this is a form of narrow mindedness within a "higher" religion. Whatever we believe, and whatever people think of us and our beliefs, we are all humans, and all the same, trying to make the best of life that we can, and someday, we will all be reinarnated. I feel very strongly about this subject.

Brightest Blessings, my dear friend.

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (11581)   ranked 42 out of 9,679 in religion  2 years ago

Oh yes, I can definitely gather that you have a belief in reincarnation:)

You bring an interesting point about the Wheel of the Year, how in general how life on earth is born, then dies only to be reborn again. I've always given the Physics explanation of it which kind of states the same thing but from a science vantage point..."Matter and energy cannot be created nor destroyed, it only changes form."
Just by viewing how the universe and everything in it is recyclable is kind of proof of reincarnation..no?
I sometimes wonder if those who don't believe in reincarnation, could they be very new souls???
I myself think of myself as an old soul, don't you, who has been around quite a number of times

myLot reputation of 98/100. Darkwing (7519)   ranked 1,029 out of 9,679 in religion  2 years ago

Yes, both explanations are quite feasible and also, yes, I believe I'm an old soul too, and I think I may have been here many times. I get feelings in certain places that make me think I'm a part of that area. It's not always in this country, but there's something there.

Brightest Blessings.

Not only Buddhism, but most oriental religions advocate reincarnation. Now as you know, all the major religions of the world originated in Asia and so it is a bit surprising when you hear that Christianity does not advocate reincarnation. But the soul is definitely a part of Christianity, so why not reincarnation? I don’t know about Islam and its beliefs on reincarnation, though.
Now reincarnation is a fundamental part of the cycle of life, as preached by most oriental religions, including Hinduism. Its explanation is really very simple and logical. You first have to start with a belief in the existence of soul. All life has soul and all souls try to attain the supreme state i.e. of being one with the Universe. For this, a soul has to go repeatedly through cycles of birth and death and in each life, the soul has to strive to improve itself. A soul maybe born as a tree, an animal or a human being, it depends on its actions in the past life. If the actions of the past life was good, the soul gradually moves on from animal bodies to the human body (it is said the birth as man is the best for a soul). Now as a man, the soul strives to further improve itself, so that it can give up all worldly attachments, all the five sins of lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego. This takes many many births and deaths (as it is very difficult to overcome our sins) and if through meditation and abstinence the soul can purify itself, it no longer wants to come back to the earth and merges with the universe. This is the cycle of Karma and reincarnation. This is applicable to all but really each religion has its own beliefs, so one cant argue on this.
PS: while reading, this response of mine sounds very novice and childish, but I hope I have been able to explain what I wanted to say.

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (11581)   ranked 42 out of 9,679 in religion  2 years ago

You expressed yourself very well here sudiptacallingu:)
As far as no belief in general with the Christian religion about reincarnation, from what I understand many of the references about reincarnation were eliminated in their version of the Bible. There are those various Christian sects, not all, that don't even believe animals have a soul at all, that God only gave mankind souls...how sad I think...how can an animal NOT have a soul? Maybe many people who don't believe in reincarnation in general are new souls?? Is that possible, and they have to learn the lessons of life with each lifetime?

myLot reputation of 90/100. sudiptacallingu (7093)   ranked 562 out of 9,679 in religion  2 years ago

Yes, how can an animal not have soul? Don’t know about wild animals but you just have to look into the eyes of any pet animal (specially dogs and horses) and see how they understand, respond and reciprocate to love, how they ‘feel’ their duty, how they give their lives for their owners. Man with all his ‘soul’ would never do so. I think people who don’t recognize and acknowledge the soul are not ‘new’ as such, but they are unaware of its presence. Irrespective of their religions beliefs, regular meditation will make them ‘feel and connect’ to their inner self, which is their soul. If not for anything else, they can do it as a very rewarding exercise and they will get hooked to it. I am not a very religious person, but one of the foundations of my life is ‘never hurt a person’s soul for soul is part of God.’

Honestly I know nothing at all about the Buddhist religion but as for my belief in reincarnation or not - I'm not sure! One part of me would say it's possible I suppose, most anything is, and there have been times in my life that I've felt I had knowledge or experience that I know I didn't get in my life-time, possibly something from another life????

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (11581)   ranked 42 out of 9,679 in religion  2 years ago

Yes, maybe those glimpses of knowledge or experiences that you've had but not in this lifetime are possible links to your past lives:)

I have an open mind about reincarnation, since there is only one way to test the theory I will have to wait on a final decision and I fear it will be too late to make a difference here. Every religion has its narrow viewpoints and inherent beliefs. That is why religion just has no reality for me. Thousands of different religions all with different dogmas and beliefs and theirs is the only one that will provide you with ultimate salvation. Excuse me but why would I believe that god would carry that kind of prejudicial thinking for all eternity.

The way I see it enlightenment as they call it should come from within yourself not because your religion says so.

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (11581)   ranked 42 out of 9,679 in religion  2 years ago

Maybe one day people will realize too that basically all religions are really similar...all believe in a "higher" Divine creator, just call the creator by different names so like what's the fuss about thinking one superior over another..right?

Hi Pye,
Well, reincarnation makes more sense than anything else to me.
Can you imagine how many souls are out there? It would make sense to recycle, so to speak.
There is documented proof that some children can remember past events about people and places that they should not have knowledge of.
I am not sure I believe in the reincarnation until you reach the highest plane and then you stop.
I personally think it is just what happens to souls. How they live on and on..not in a Heaven or whatever.
But, right here on Earth.

I think it is a soul thing, not a religious thing.
Like believing in a certain religion to move on..bah..that is just a way for that particular sect to force others to believe in their way of thinking.

But, yes. It makes more sense than going to a Heaven with pearly gates, gold roads..etc.

Yes, I believe in God.

myLot reputation of 69/100. II2aTee (795)   ranked 360 out of 9,679 in religion  2 years ago

I appreciate and share this view with you. I often wonder how crowded "heaven" would be if all the souls of everyone who ever died went there. I mean if you think about the population of earth now, then think about everyone who has ever lived and died....

It would be just my luck that I die and get to the gates and theres a note on them saying "Heaven Full".

myLot reputation of 98/100. saigonwarrior (709)   ranked 172 out of 9,679 in religion  2 years ago

Yes, exactly!

We are not really sure when time here on Earth began, at least, I am not.

To think of all the souls, and not just human ones, that if were subjected to just one life would be astronomical!

Well, "Heaven" may not be full if it is a really, really, REALLY big place..lol
So, there is still hope for you.

Thanks for making me smile:)

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (11581)   ranked 42 out of 9,679 in religion  2 years ago

LOL--that's funny II2aTee...yes what a disappointment it would be if our "soul" went to those pearly gates and there was that sign of Heaven being full
Of course there's the question just exactly where our souls go, but maybe if the concept of Heaven is more the universe at large, well there there sure be a lot of room--you would also have to get into the idea that it's not just our souls...that is the souls of people who have lived here on earth, but any soul from any planetary system that has "intelligence"

I don't know if either of you are "into" the psychic Sylvia Browne who has written many books, including touching on the idea of reincarnation...some think she's a complete fraud...I don't...she does get into the concept that each soul does pick the circumstances of when to be born, to who their parents will be, and so forth...even the idea of what "kind" of life we will live to learn the next lesson
Any thoughts there??

myLot reputation of 98/100. saigonwarrior (709)   ranked 172 out of 9,679 in religion  2 years ago

Yes, I watch her on Montel if I have the time on Wednesday's. I did read one of her books a few years ago and visited her website. Very interesting.

http://www.sylvia.org/home/index.cfm

Her way of explaining things make a lot more sense than a lot of other books that I have read.

I don't agree with her 100%, but a lot of what she speaks on does make sense. I do believe that there are other intelligent beings out there, probably more intelligent than us. Thinking that we are the only ones seems kind of vain to me.

The truth is out there...

I think that was is true after we die, meaning that after the body dies, happens no matter what religion you follow. If we die, give up our body, and as spirit move to a new place, then that is true for every human being. Whatever happens, whatever you believe, the sun rises and sets, and a million other things continue to happen the same. Even if you follow no religion, the same will happen. Personally, I believe we continue in some form and may be able to reincarnate into something else. Like maybe another kind of being on another planet in a different galaxy. I don't care what religions say. You don't need them to have some association, relationship and connection with God or any supreme being. Its all the universe and everything is a part of everything else. I have no clue as to what happens after the body dies. Whatever happens, it happens to everybody.

myLot reputation of 69/100. II2aTee (795)   ranked 360 out of 9,679 in religion  2 years ago

Bravo. Very well said, friend.

The arrogance of some religions and individuals who claim they know the true truth!

No one knows. Everyone has their hunches. But the truth is, if someone knows the truth, they are already dead and unable to tell the living.

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (11581)   ranked 42 out of 9,679 in religion  2 years ago

Bingo you hit it! Yes I believe too, that no matter what our religion is, the spirit/soul winds up in the same place.
I can't help thinking that might be the real shocker to those who believe only their spirit or soul will go to Heaven then and the rest of us go to hell...LOL--can you imagine the interesting "conversations" or interactions between the soul who was a Born again Christian, with that of a pagan/wiccan/witch...hehee

myLot reputation of 99/100. sigma77 (4282)   ranked 916 out of 9,679 in religion  2 years ago

I often wonder what religion the "gods" and the spirit follow or would choose to follow. Think about so many religions who believe theirs is the only truth. It has to be that way so the fear factor can be invoked. Most religions are based in fear and punishments. What nonsense.

I don't know... I half-believe I was a cat in ancient Egypt--I possess many cat-like qualities not limited to but including being able to walk silently and unintentionally scaring people when they turn around...
Then, too, I've had the romantic conceit of having lived about a hundred years earlier, as a gypsy, who met an untimely end by strangulation--I've always had a deep crease across my throat.
My sisters always considered me weird, and probably still do.

myLot reputation of 96/100. BarBaraPrz (3353)   ranked 1,076 out of 9,679 in religion  2 years ago

I forgot to mention that, if reincarnation IS true, I believe this is my last trip around. I won't be coming back. At least, I hope not. I'm too tired.

myLot reputation of 92/100. novataylor (2142)   ranked 959 out of 9,679 in religion  2 years ago

Gpysy or not, you very may well have met your death by strangulation or some such thing in another life. I have a firm belief in this type of thing - one of my sisters believes she was hanged or strangled in a past life. I know I've been raped in a past life and have lived in a Nazi concentration camp. So many of our "idiosyncratic" fears or phobias and such things come from our past life memories, and also, I believe, ancestral memories. So glad to know I'm not alone in this!

Love your avatar, by the way. I, too, am a cat person and have a great affinity for them. Purrrrrr.

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (11581)   ranked 42 out of 9,679 in religion  2 years ago

Hehe....I see we both have that gift of scaring people to death since we move so quietly
Yes, I do think some aspects of our past lives do continue into our present...that's a real interesting point about the gypsy thing BarBaraPrz. Have you ever had dreams of such a life?

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (11581)   ranked 42 out of 9,679 in religion  2 years ago

Oh yes...it could explain different phobias..like a person's fear of water could be attributed to a past life where the person drowned
