A Vatican official has listed drugs, pollution, genetic manipulation and social and economic injustices as new areas of sinful behavior. Sins increasingly manifest themselves as behavior that damages society as a whole, Monsignor Gianfranco Girotti said in an interview published Sunday by the Vatican's daily newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano. "While sin used to concern mostly the individual, today it has mainly a social resonance, due to the phenomenon of globalization," said Girotti, who heads the Apostolic Penitentiary, a Vatican body that issues decisions on matters of conscience and grants absolutions. Catholic teaching distinguishes between lesser venial sins and mortal sins. Listing the new areas of sinful behavior, Girotti denounced "certain violations of the fundamental rights of human nature through experiments, genetic manipulations."He also mentioned drugs -- which "weaken the mind and obscure intelligence" -- pollution, and the widening social and economic differences between the rich and the poor. Girotti said the Catholic Church continued to be concerned by other sinful acts, including abortion and pedophilia. He said Church authorities had reacted with "rigorous measures" to child abuse scandals within the clergy, but he also claimed that the issue had been excessively emphasized by the media. As a catholic myself I say it's about time what do you think about the "new sins"?http://www1.whdh.com/news/articles/world/BO75086/

well the catholic church does believe in dogma, i think you have to as well to be a catholic, and if youre not a catholic i dont see why youre concerned with what this man has to say about morality and sin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogma "what you hold true on earth, i shall hold true in heaven" -jesus so you see, they are justified, even if theyre wrong or idiots.

I am not a Catholic, but I would have to say the Vatican has got it right. It shows far thinking, community orientated & most of all, concern regarding world issues, to list the above issues as sins. I applaud them.

"also claimed that the issue had been excessively emphasized by the media" excessively emphasized??? what the hell is that suppose to mean? The only thing IMO that is "excessive" anythign about child abuse within the church is the fact that it happens at all!! As for the other "new" sins..well iMO its just one more confirming thing that proves MAN makes the rules..not god....

i wonder if it was ever proven that what we hold to be true in this world, is true at the other side? hehe it will probably be a different thing out there, but who knows? as for me, as long as what i do does not harm me, and other people, i think its just about justified that i am living well. live and let live. the more people try to be cautious the more they become sinners. its a changing world. people adapt and so are the things around us.

I wondered when I would see this on MyLot (too lazy to start my own thread...) Another news site; http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7287071.stm I'm not a Catholic and never will be. However, I'll comment anyway... These new sins are, of course, things that are bad for society (for the most part...) and the world in general. Telling its flock that these things are bad is, obviously, a good thing. The fact it is common sense seems to have been missed though. It's interesting that the Catholic Church is finally moving with the times. However, I do not think that creating new sins is the way forward, but advocating new virtues. This is my main problem with Catholicism; everything human is portrayed in a negative light. So, can we expect some new virtues to counter these new sins? And mathewsir; if you spam my response I will report you.
