Do you like olives?  email this discussion to a friend?

Do you like olives? Are you a green olive or black olive person if you like them? What are your favorite recipes with olives?

I like olives somewhat, they are good on salads and pizza but I haven't used them for much else. My hubby bought a giant jar of green olives, so looking for something to do with them!!

p.s.- he wants me to ask you guys since we can't find it anywhere online: how do they get the seeds out of an olive? And what are the red things inside green olives?
(Not sure where he's leading to with this one, lol!)

I'm not a fan of the stuffed green olives. But I do love the Smoked Garlic Green Olives that have the seed still inside. Those are soo yummy!

I do like black olives from time to time.

The red thing inside of some green olives is called a pimento. Not sure what the heck a pimento is though... The seeds are pretty tough to get out, I usually just eat the olive off of the seed. LOL

Smoked garlic olives sound good i might have to try them! I thought it was a pimento, but wans't sure, lol. I don't really know what a pimento is either...though I know I like pimento spreads lol. thanks for the response!

I'm not a huge fan of olives. The only way I can tolerate then is if they're burried in cheese or sauce on a piece of pizza. xD

I mostly eat them on salads. I prefer black, I like green, too. The red thing is a pimento (a variety of a pepper). You can buy a pitter that is used for olives and/or cherries. They look like this http://www.organize.com/chandolpi.html and should be available at some supermarkets or kitchen stores. You can pit cherries with a paperclip, but I don't know if it would work with olives too. http://moonstarsandpaper....
Sorry I don't have any info for what to actually do with them. I haven't gotten real creative.

There is no olive I do not love and I use an olive pitter to take the seeds out or a cherry pitter, as they are often the same. Although "rubies" beat me to the first link, here is another:

http://www.amazon.com/s?i...

You can get nice ones for pennies on the dollar at eBay, though. Life is too short to live without tools!

that is a nifty gadget...we might need to invest in one if he continues to buy them by the jar, lol...I would love trying to grow our own, but I think we'd need a greenhouse since it would never survive the winter here!

I love the black olives. I just eat them out of the can sometimes, but I love adding them to a lot of other things as well. Such as my pizza, & my salids.

I like black olives. I like them plain out of the can. I like them on pizza, in enchiladas, spanish rice. Stuff like that. I do not like green olives. I just can't passed the taste of them and that icky red thing is a pimento. Machines take out olive seeds or you can eat around it I guess. You can't eat an olive straight off a tree either since they will make you sick.

myLot reputation of 96/100. vera5d (2201)   ranked 49 out of 8,637 in cooking  4 years ago

I like the black ones more than the green ones also...i would like an olive tree, but i don't think it would grow here very well!

I enjoy OLIVES,
On my Pizza, in a Green Salad or on a platter with Cheese, semi dried tomatoes, slices of thin cooked meats, pickled onions, dill or gerken (like little dill).
I think you are talking about stuffed olives with the red things inside them, Most times it's bell pepper/capsicum some times however they will stuff them with many things, like fish, onion and other vegetables. I think this is to give them some colour.

Vera5d,

What I did miss to say is that the Olives with pips/seeds in them can be removed by a Olive piper same as you do to remove pips from Cherries.
These are like a pair of pliers, one side has a little cup (with a hole in the centre of it) the olive sits in it and the other arm of the pliers hve a sort of finger.
When you close the pliers the finger pushes the pip through the hole.
There you have one olive no pip.

I am from Louisiana and we put olives in the potato salad. It gives it a whole new taste and really good. I like the black olives best. We always have plenty of both on hand. The green ones are good I like the salt taste. If you want the recipe for the potato salad them email me and i will send it.

myLot reputation of 96/100. vera5d (2201)   ranked 49 out of 8,637 in cooking  4 years ago

the potato salad idea sounds yummy! I will have to try adding them next time...you made me think of another good use - pasta salad!

myLot reputation of 74/100. bdugas (2792)   ranked 506 out of 8,637 in cooking  4 years ago

We also put dill relish, eggs, parsley, onions, in it too. I use a spice called Nature's Seasoning and it goes in it too, but that is good in all your cooking. I guess with potato salad it is what ever you like. And yes sounds good in pasta salad too.

I like olives...all different kinds...black, green, kalamata..
I've had green olives stuffed with pimento, garlic cloves, and cheese. I like black olives on salads but on pizza I only like green olives.
I love tapenade (olive spread)
* 3 cups whole, pitted olives
* 1/3 cup olive oil
* 2 cloves garlic

Place olives and garlic in a blender. Add olive oil in a stream while pureeing; process until mixture becomes a thick, but not to smooth paste.
Serve on bread, pita, or crackers or tossed with pasta, potatoes or rice. It can also be mixed together with cream cheese and/or sour cream for a great vegetable dip.

myLot reputation of 87/100. Modestah (7912)   ranked 311 out of 8,637 in cooking  4 years ago

oh thank you for sharing the recipe, brimia... I tried tapenade for the first time not too long ago and the girls and I just loved it!

myLot reputation of 96/100. vera5d (2201)   ranked 49 out of 8,637 in cooking  4 years ago

that sounds absolutely yummy! Will have to try that soon!
