This weekend I finally broke down and bought a bag of birdfeed for our feeder. Man the cost of birdseed is getting crazy noqw as well. Since I planted so many various flowers for the birds recently I decided to place my feeder back up even with the cost of seed now days. The feeder hangs in my Red Maple tree out front directly in view from my large window. I sit there each morning watching the birds. The finches seem to eat just early mornings till just before noon. After that I have seen a couple cardinals and blackbirds only. I want to sit there one day seeing all the variety that eat but for now I've yard work etc to tend to first. So far I have the large black birds and a bunch of finches visiting. I need a better camera as they are so small and not easy to get a good shot of them as they eat. Do you have a feeder for the birds? What types visit it daily? Is there a set pattern they seem to eat at it? The attatched photo shows a finch about to leave the feeder.

I have a feeder, but I put critter food in it because the cats think the squirrels are more fun than the birds...

Oh I can only imagine the sounds the cats make watching the squirrels.

I am not surprised that the cost of bird seed is going up as well! We had to take our pug Billy into the vet yesterday to have his ears checked and it cost us $50.00. That was for the checkup and a perscription which is what it costs for hubby and I when we go see the doctor. A year ago when we took Billy to the vet the same thing only cost us 26.00. Prices are unreal!

I ahven't even licensed or gotten Buster his shots since we got him a few years ago. I can only imagine the total bill for that.

We had to update Billys shots last month and it cost us over $150 to get two shots, have his nails clipped and the office visit! I have been around a lot of dogs that never had shots and did fine but with Billy being a pug and such a fussy breed and prone to health problems we take extra care. I would not worry if Buster is a healthy dog and he looks happy and healthy to me!

I enjoy feeding the birds, but we don't get as many here (in town) as we used to when we lived in the country. I have sparrows, finches, mourning doves, an occasional bluejay and lots of crows in the spring. The crows chase off the smaller birds, so I find myself scaring them away when I see them. Squirrels are a problem because I can't afford to feed them - they're gluttons! The price of bird seed has gone up about a dollar since last year. I'm wondering if I can find a spot to grow some of my own this year.

I see all sorts around the yard but not too many at the feeder yet. I suppose they have to get usede to it. I am thinking of planting some sunflowers for the big birds and squirrels.

I have a regular (two sided) cedar bird feeder hanging on the huge tree in my front yard. I fill it about twice a week or so. I get sparrows, wrens, nuthatchers, red bellied woodpeckers, cardinals, titmouse, and downey woodpeckers that come to this feeder. I also have a double sided suet feeder. All the birds enjoy this feeder too.

myLot reputation of 95/100. webeishere (12483)   ranked 1 out of 65 in bird watching  2 years ago

I bought this at WalMart awhile back for like $10 with seeds I think.
If I get more birds I am also loooking to get a suet feeder. I have woodpeckers a lot in my tree as well. We have woodpeckers as well. A few different breeds also. Downy is one and the others I can't recall.

I just bought a big bag of wild bird seed this morning and some sasflower. I have about 4 feeders. The little yellow finches like the sasflower and the cardinals. I do get the big black birds too. When I look out my kitchen window I can see all my bird feeders. And in the middle I have a bird bath. I love watching the birds. There is a set pattern my birds eat around 7:00 in the morning and then 6:00 at night. Enjoy watching your birdies.

myLot reputation of 95/100. webeishere (12483)   ranked 1 out of 65 in bird watching  2 years ago

I haven't seen the yellow finches at the feeder but they are around though. This finch is brown with a gey and white neck and head coloring I think. I want to get a bird bath as well for out front. That's when they eat here as well but after about noon I don't see any at all.

We've been feeding birds and squirrels all winter and yea, it does get expensive.

I took the liberty of taking your photo and adding a bit of flash to it so you can see the little fella better.

He's a cutie!

The only birds I ever get to see around here are sparrows and pigeons. They are everywhere, then if we go to the parks there are a lot of seagulls now as well.

myLot reputation of 95/100. webeishere (12483)   ranked 1 out of 65 in bird watching  2 years ago

I see those as well. Not too many seagulls but a few due to being so close to the Nature Center. Pidgeons are also around but not near the houses.

I haven't set any feeders out last fall being as I just don't have the extra money to be feeding them like I used to. I'm hoping I can do it this fall thru the winter thou cause I really miss watching all the different birds eating. I had woodpeckers, finches, sparrows, blue jays, cardinals, wrens, and some I never bothered to find out what they were. Beautiful mix of colors thou.

myLot reputation of 95/100. webeishere (12483)   ranked 1 out of 65 in bird watching  2 years ago

Yeah I was really shocked shocked when I started shopping around for seeds for the feeder. It has gotten ridiculous I think. But they need some good food as well plus I need something pleasant to watch as I stare out the front window. lol

I would love to have a bird feeder, but dont. The only reason being that any birds arttacted to it, but would be fair game for my cats, & if I had a feeder out the back, the min fox terrier is an excellent hunter.
I have a lot of native birds anyway., I have two huge gum trees out the front & we see & hear lots of birds.
Our the back we have fruit trees that some birds are attracted to.
Finches are cure birds.
My parents used to have a bird feeder & they enjoyed watching various birds use it. They gave up on it eventually, as there were too many poos to clean up.

myLot reputation of 95/100. webeishere (12483)   ranked 1 out of 65 in bird watching  2 years ago

Do the birds feed off the trees you have then?

The birds out the back feed of the fruit trees for sue, especially plums & apricots.
Out the front, I think the use the trees for nest building, protection & finding insects, etc on the trees.

I sure wish I could have a bird feeder....used to. Years and years ago, I hung a bird feeder on one of the steps of the fire-escape of my apartment building....used to love seeing sparrows, bluejays, starlings, etc come for it...then my spoil sport landlord forced me to take it down..claimed it was obscuring space on the fire-escape--uh, yea, right surethumbdown
