Beets: I think they taste like dirt! email this discussion to a friend?

My sister in law made a gourmet meal for our sibling supper we have every two months. She grilled veggies...peppers, potatoes, onion, okra and beets. I like everything but the beets. To me they taste like dirt unless they are pickled. Then I do like them. What is your take on beets? Do you like them or not at all?

Hello jillhill

I haven't had beets in at least 20 years. Not since I was a child. Heck, maybe 30 years. I wasn't too impressed with them then. I don't have fond beet memnories.

However, I have a friend who craves beets on a regular basis. I imagine that when I'm around her I may have to try beets again.

If I never ate them again it would be alright with me! LOL

Yep, I have to say that I totally agree with you on this, they do taste like dirt. Sometimes they are so horrible I cannot eat them. I definately prefer them to be pickled.

Me too! That's the only way I can tolerate them! LOL

I have never tried cooked beets, I've only had them pickled. I am not a big fan of them. I think they taste a little like metal. I try to add a little to my cold salads when I can since they are so healthy, though. If I add just one or two slices to the salad it doesn't taste bad, so I can sneak it in there and get the good nutrients from them without suffering with the flavor.

That's for sure...I really don't want to have to taste them! LOL

I absolutely refuse to cook or eat beets. They make so much mess to cook, I hate the taste of them and I don't appreciate still seeing them when I go to the bathroom. They're nasty and are not allowed in my house plain and simple.

myLot reputation of 99/100. jillhill (5386)   ranked 19 out of 530 in vegetables  3 months ago

They don't find there way into my house either! LOL

hello jillhill

oh i love beets! they are so good! pickled beets are so good. and the grilled beets sound delicious. i have heard of roasted beets before but haven't fixed any at home. and what is good, hard boil about a dozen eggs, let cool and peel the eggs, then get some pickled beets and put the hard boiled eggs in a big container and pour the pickled beets right in with the eggs covering the top of the eggs. store in referigerator for a few days, letting the beet juice soak into the egg whites, and serve up a side dish of those eggs and beats like that, and i promise you, you will enjoy them like that as well.

have a beautiful afternoon.

Oh jeepers, beets are one of my favorites, many people do not peel that rough outer layer after they have been cooked though, and that would indeed make them taste like dirt! Try them again, boiled, peeled and buttered, I think you might change your mind. They are soooooo good for you too!

myLot reputation of 99/100. jillhill (5386)   ranked 19 out of 530 in vegetables  3 months ago

Maybe that is why they taste like dirt! LOL

I have never eaten beets before. I'm sure I've passed them on a salad bar or two, not knowing what they were. What do they look like? Are there a couple colors of them? Is it something that is usually eaten on its own, or mixed with other vegetables?

myLot reputation of 99/100. jillhill (5386)   ranked 19 out of 530 in vegetables  3 months ago

They are red and look like a turnip...you usually eat them by themselves as they turn everything around them red. I do like them pickled....once in a while but really....they are yucky!

I don't think I would like beets grilled but they are delicious when they are cooked with salt and pepper and lots of butter. It seems that they would be like dried bark if they were grilled. Just my opinion.

I have never tried them that way...I still don't think I would totally be in love with them! LOL
