A question for all of my kitty loving friends.....  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 99/100. Katlady2 (4477)   ranked 9 out of 5,817 in cats 4 years ago

Now, with me being the big kitty lover that I am, you would think that I already know the answer to my own question. But I don't and I need your help please. Would you please give me some ideas of some more inexpensive ways to deal with those pesky fleas that are bothering my kitties? I'm so tired of having to use toxic flea spray every week (which means braving 10 out of 11 sets of claws each time. And Sevin Dust works, but I get tired of having to wipe down all of the dusty paw prints and wash my sheets every day from kitties getting it all over my bed. And right now, I just can't get up enough money for what I really want to use, which is the Frontline Plus, even if I go online to order it. Having 11 cats makes it a bit too expensive to buy a 12 pack of that every month. I heard that putting yeast in the canned food helps to get rid of the fleas.

Any help you can give me on this would be sooooooo very appreciated. Thanks and big hugs to all.........Carryl

Since I never usew chemicals the YEAST is the only way to go. They can't taste it, & it kills fleas & their eggs!! So buy some powdered yeast, & add it to their canned food....Lori

I did some research on yeast becasue I'd never heard of it before and I came across this article:

Brewer's yeast added to the diet has been touted as a sure cure for fleas, but recently information has come to light suggesting that the large amount of brewer's yeast necessary to eliminate fleas might cause health problems. Instead of adding brewer's yeast to your dog's diet, try sprinkling it on your pet. Thoroughly rub it into the coat to make sure it reaches the skin. It is best to do this outside, because the fleas cannot stand the smell of yeast and will jump off of your pet.

Thank you for sharing that info coffeeshot. I appreciate it.

Fleas lay eggs on your pet and that is basically like making a nest, right? I know there is the story of the farmer whose horse had bird nests in its mane and the vet told him to use yeast in his mane and the birds would go away. The farmer did it and it worked. That's because "Yeast is Yeast and Nest is Nest and never the mane shall tweet." (*groan*)

I have to say that the only thing I've found to really work and that I've heard from other people to be the only thing that works, is Frontline. Perhaps you can do some eBay selling or budget in another area in your life to be able to afford it? It really does seem to be the best option. Best flea-free wishes for you!

That's definitely a thought to keep in mind. I do have lots of things I could sell too. Thanks for the idea hon. I appreciate it.

Yes, I use the Advantage on mine, it's about $10 a tube, I buy it from 1-800-Pet Meds, and get a slight discount. It works for about a month. It's the only thing that's worked for me.
Speaking of which, I need to get more of that soon myself!

cant say ive ever heard of using sevin dust for around animals, i thought on packet it said to be careful around animals and children with it.

I used to use it when i gardened but only if i knew no animals or children would be around.

myLot reputation of 99/100. Katlady2 (4477)   ranked 9 out of 5,817 in cats  4 years ago

Hi Lish. I thought that too. But my veterinarian said that it isn't harmful to the animals....at least the powdered form isn't anyway. It really works too, but you have to use it at the bare minimum, once a week for it to keep working. I use it in the house too if the fleas start showing up.

Try to avoid using pesticides on your kitty. Cats have very thin skin and will absorb the chemicals into their blood stream. The chemicals will build up over time and can cause nervous system disorders.

Here is a good article on natural flea prevention that you may be able to use. It gives tips on getting fleas off of your pet as well as reducing the number of fleas in your house and yard: http://www.associatedcont...

I just went and read your article (it IS yours, right?). Thank you so much for giving me the link. I really appreciate it. I will most definitely be putting all of that info to use.

I noticed one of your sources was MotherEarth News. I love that magazine and am a faithful subscriber to it. While reading your article, I already knew about most of the natural ways of concuring fleas which I've read from that magazine.

I read somewhere that you can use the staff that people use on kids.the rid for lice cause it has conditioner in it not to dry the skin out.But if you have a lot of cats then try the new thing out calld bio sport for fleas & tick.Good luck.

Hi Katlady. Any of those commonly used flea treatments are probably the worse kind you can use as they are very highly toxic and could cause later health problems for your furbabies....I did a quick check for the Frontline Plus just to see how expensive they are..yikes you're right..costs a small fortune
I once had a kitty that must have inherited all his siblings fleas...years and years ago, a woman who worked in my mother's bank brought in a litter of kittens that her female cat had had...all the kittens were 'adopted' save one, no one seemed to want him...well guess who adopted him..yup my mother..she brought him home and yikes, he was crawling with fleas...the way I got rid of them was to give him constant baths..that cat must have had the guinness world record for a cat with the most baths...after each bath, I combed him with a flea comb..by my side I kept a bowl of hot water and would dunk the comb that caught the fleas, and in some cases just grab at the critter with my fingers and dunk in the water...after about I don't know how many baths, Tommy was flea free..
Now you have a lot more kitties so this will be harder to do and no doubt you would have to wear combat gear...
There are more natural alternatives and in the long run a lot cheaper than that Frontline plus--here's a great website to order these products

Thanks for the links hon. I just checked them out. I think the first one is more along the lines of my pitiful budget for the time being. When hubby gets his next check I'm going to order some of their products. I'm not brave enough to bathe my kitties...don't have my suit of armor with me right now. LOL! Thanks again hon.

It's funny this discussion inspired me to write up an article about more natural ways of de-fleaing pet...hehe--amazing where one can get ideas for articles, no?

There's a product called "Capstar" that kills fleas right away.

If you get the dog size, cut it in half, then 6 pills will do your 11 cats (I need 12 pills.)

If you treat them 4 days in a row, then a week later treat them again, then a week later again, that should get the entire life cycle.

They only last 24 hours, but they are cheaper than the monthly application.

You might also consider bombing the house (the cats not in it of course) with a spray that kills all phases of the life cycle.

I did this last fall, capstar/bomb/spray the yard and the flea problem pretty much went away.

Thank you hon. I will have to check that one out. Sounds like it's a good product to have.

I just read this thread to get ideas. About the only thing I've ever used that worked was frontline but I love the idea of using yeast powder and I'll definitely try that one if the cats get fleas this Summer. Thanks for posting this helpful thread.

I'm glad it helped you out hon. I'm going to try the yeast too. I think I can afford that one. LOL

According to TV and our vet, vacuuming every day, including the upholstered furniture, and sprinkling salt on carpets is one of the best ways to control them. The eggs can't hatch out and make more. And putting a 1-inch piece of a flea collar in the dust bag or cup kills fleas right away. Cheap AND effective AND safe... it sure helps with our 3 dogs!

My poor vacuum is working overtime lately. I've definitely been keeping up on that part of it anyway. Thanks hon. Hugs!

Me, i don't like kitty. im not a pet lover, what i want is just look at them but being the owner,... i dont like. if we have a cat here in our house, they just eat what we eat. were cant afford to buy food for them.

myLot reputation of 99/100. Katlady2 (4477)   ranked 9 out of 5,817 in cats  4 years ago

Some people love them and some don't. I guess it all depends on a persons likes and dislikes (or allergies). Thanks for the response hon.
