Ridiculous smoking laws.  |

 A new law has come into Ontario. As of June 1st, all retailers must have their cigarette shelves completely covered. I was talking to one retailer, and as of that date, she can't even take the pack out of the display case to show the customer. Now this is a big problem for me. The cigarette company JUST changed the packaging of my brand, and I can't recognize it till I see it. Now, since they can't show it to me, I'm snookered. So, the retailer suggested I walk around with an old box so I can show the retailer the kind I want. This is ridiculous. This place is a smoke shop, that's all they sell. They have a huge room, a walk-in humidor, but, customers can't walk in. They will now have to say exactly what they want and the shop keeper will go an get it.
Unreal. The government is a bunch of bloody hypocrites. They impose all these ridiculous laws on a legal product. Now if they had any balls at all, they'd ban it outright, but, they love the taxes too much.

1.  lonewolfnan (2844) | 4 months ago |  Here in BC we have that law in effect now and while I do not think it will help with the cigarette problem,it definately does make alot of stores look empty as the space behind the counter was the main area for the cigarette packages.Basically,in its infinite wisdom,our government decided that smoking is bad and therefore we have to jump thru hoops to get them.This will have a large effect on the RETAIL sales of legal smokes.However,can you imagine how great the smuggled cigareetes will sell??Now just because the govt. loses all that tax money,they did it out of concern for our health.It does not matter that many more people will be buying illegal merchandise thus turning more and more Canadians into law breakers(I am still calling in all my friends and family members for having illegal guns for the last 50 years).I am glad the governemnt took one more worry or choice away from me so I can conentrate on whether to pay my rent or buy food this month(I am not a smoker).

| 2. Ruthep (2597) | 4 months ago |  Here in Iowa every business that sells cigarettes has to keep them locked up behind the counter. You can no longer just pick up a pack like you could 10 years ago. So if you are in a grocery store there is only one counter that has the cigarettes behind it and that is the 10 items or less so if you ask for a pack or cartoon they have to stop checking you out to go get them. That's like lots of OTC medicines, we have to go to the pharmacy counter and sign for them. Lots of laws just make no sense. It is either legal or its not.

Here in the UK they are talking about removing the Cigarette Machines now so that you can only buy them over the Counter

| Asylum (3236) | 4 months ago |  Cigarette machines are not as popular here as they used to be, but as Gabs says they are still around in a few places. Personally I have no problem with the removal of these machines because it simply means making a point of buying tobacco products elsewhere, although they can be very useful at times.

| fluffysue (497) | 4 months ago |  Wow, I forgot about cigarette machines! Not sure how long it has been since they were removed in NJ, but it could be 20 years. I remember when I was a kid, thinking they were candy machines. We also never had cigarettes out, that I can recall (but then I never smoked), they were always behind the counter, but visible. I think that had more to do with the possiblity of theft than anything else.

My mom said, though, that they were going to have a catalogue for people to look through.. Somehow that just sounds so funny to me.
Aren't they ruining the benefits of having all those ghastly images on the package if they hide them?

OreoCookie3 (13266) | 4 months ago | I do think cigarettes should be banned, because they are a conveyance to deliver drugs to the body... but you are right about one thing... they won't make them illegal for one.. it is the tax money they get off them... and for 2 there would be rioting like you wouldn't believe. The National Guard would have to be manning the streets here in the US if that happened. Can you imagine thousands of angry citizens having a nicotine fit all at the same time? The NG might have to bring out the big guns to restore order! | |

| OreoCookie3 (13266) | 4 months ago | Unless they can still stand to make billions of $$ off it, then they just make it illegal to smoke anywhere, but still want you to buy them so they can have the taxes.. catch 22 really. Also it is good for population control too. So many people are dying from them every year, it keeps us from being over populated. I remember reading once that cigarettes and wars were two ways to have population control. Sounded really cynical to me... but I think there is some truth in it. | |

| 7. Adelida2233 (847) | 4 months ago |  That is rather ridiculous. I live in the US, so the rule doesn't apply to us, yet. Is the brand one that is available in the US? If, so, just look at the website a couple of times until you remember it.
Also, instead of carrying around a whole empty pack just cut the front off of a pack and carry it around in your wallet until you can remember.
Hopefully this will never pass in the US, I really don't get the reasoning behind it...

| 8. katsmeow1213 (1430) | 4 months ago |  That is ridiculous. We have quite a few laws going into affect around here. Recently I heard we are no longer allowed to smoke in the car with our kids. I don't smoke in the car if my kids are in it, but when I did or if I ever do again I always have the windows rolled down if I do. What I wonder is most smoking parents smoke in the home around the kids, so why is the car making a big difference?
We're also not allowed to smoke in the mall parking lot... I bet you a lot of smoking employees are quitting their jobs!
I've heard we won't be able to smoke at the fair either. I promise you if that's true I won't be going this year.

10.  triptadasgupta (392) | 4 months ago |  well friend after reading this discussion i am also a bit of perplexed as to what is the idea behind it.The government should either stop the selling of cigarettes or should sell it openly because in this way neither the seller is finding any fun in selling neither the customer.Because i feel that if you cannot see the product you are buying then what is the idea of buying it.
