I'm so cheap... email this discussion to a friend?

Whenever I go to a vending machine, I check to see if anyone's left any change in it - and then I check the floor around it in case anyone's dropped the odd penny.

When I'm doing my grocery shopping, I'll buy supermarket own brand products simply because they're cheaper than the "name" brands.

I buy all my books, videos and DVDs in charity shops.

I wait till the end of season sales to buy my clothes.

If an item of clothing is getting worn, I'll see if I can patch it up, rather than throw it out.

When driving into town, I'll park in the cheapest car park I know, then walk the last mile or so to where I'm going.

I re-use envelopes whenever possible (so if someone sends me a bill, they're likely to get the cheque in the same envelope).

I'm the cheapest date in town. If a lady's going out with me, it'll be to the free museums and art galleries, and I'll cook a meal for her myself rather than take her to a restaurant (and I am actually a decent cook).

If I walk past a skip, I'll have a look in it to see if there's anything useful I can take home with me.

My living room has two light fittings - I took one of the bulbs out.

When people give me presents, I save the wrapping paper to re-use when getting someone else a present. Sometimes I'll buy a present to fit the wrapping paper.

In short, Scrooge is my hero.

What about yourselves, how cheap are you? What do you do to avoid spending money?

I wouldnt get too down on yourself, cheap people sometimes end up very wealthy. I think I spring for a restaurant once in awhile though if you can afford it. I always travel the metro during non rush hour to avoid rush hour fees. I dont buy new clothes unless I really, really need them. I do alot of shopping at discount places like aldis and Biglots.

Thanks for replying, Snowy. I'm not down on myself for being cheap. I'm actually down on myself for previous financial irresponsibility which has made it necessary to learn to be cheap.

Pennies from heaven, pennies from heaven. I always walk with my head down looking for change. I always manage to find some in the McDonald's parking lot. Usually it's just a penny (but a penny is a penny, right? it all adds up) but a couple of weeks ago I found two dimes! Whoohoo!

As for envelopes, oh Lord, I use the return self-addressed envelopes. You know, the ones you are supposed to send your payments in? But since we pay over the phone or by ATM I keep the envelopes and either put a label over the address or just scribble it out. For example, I get a sheet home from school saying the kids are going on a school trip and it costs $10. I will take one of those envelopes and put the signed form and money in it, scribble the address on the front and write "Money for..." and then my daughter's name in the top left hand corner. Or if I am collecting cash for a group I use one of the envelopes. A friend of mine doesn't write the name on the front of a greeting card envelope for the sole purpose of that person being able to use the envelope again.

I have bought clothes in second-hand stores but, let's face it, teenage girls want the real deal. Books, of course, I get secondhand but sometimes can't help myself and buy new ones.

We have a light bulb that burned out in our bedroom 3-bulb fixture and we haven't bothered to change the third bulb. We are okay with just two. The same with the light fixture in the hallway.

I new I was getting a huge chunk of inheritance money and told my husband we could fly to our summer destination (his family's home) but even knowing we had such money he refused to pay the full price for air fare and checked the rates every day until he got some good seat sales. It means we are flying at different times and will only be down there together for 5 days, but that's okay. We might have more fun without him!

I try not to waste food but my kids just WON'T eat leftovers. I certainly stock up on stuff like toilet paper and laundry detergent when they are half price or even less. I will not buy them at full price when they come on sale so often. But when it comes to taking my kids out on occasions, we don't scrimp. We have had to live poorly for so long because of my disability that sometimes you just have to treat the kids. It helps when you can find money on the street though.

hi. I am also cheap and I like it. I don't like shopping. My boyfriend doesn't like it too so we understand each other great:). I think shopping is a waste of time, so I buy only things I really need to buy.

"I'll park in the cheapest car park I know, then walk the last mile or so" - you are probably not only cheap, but also healthy too. You walk instead of going by car sometimes, and you cook meals yourself. It sounds to me like you are wise, healthy person:).

I also like to visit museums and galleries when they have a free day (usually they are free one day in a week).

I try to reuse what it able to be reused. For example plastic shopping bags - I use them as a garbage bags.

I decided this year to sell books, which I received as a presents. I did it for the first time. And I think I'll try to do it often, cause I read books only once. And of course I wouldn't sell the book from someone really close to me, especially the book with dedication.

Beeing cheap is also beeing wise - don't you think so?LOL

have a nice day, jazgottt.

Cheers Jasgott. The good thing about museums and art galleries in Britain is that they're free to go in. Do you get much money selling books?

myLot reputation of 96/100. jazgottt (806)   ranked 281 out of 2,795 in frugal living  4 months ago

Oh, you have to buy a ticket when you go to museums and art galleries here in Poland. But all museum etc. have one day in a week, when they are free to visit. Caricature Museum has free saturdays for example. And it great museum cause it is quites small and really entertaining. And exhibitions change quite often.

I sell books as almost not used, because they are almost ot used. Books I receive as gifts are mainly popular novels, which are easy to sell at internet auction site. I get about 60-80% of the original price. I think it is good result.

take care, jazgottt.

I appreciate your efforts. It takes couage and effotrs to become cheap. still I did not understand some of them such as 1)Why to wait till the end of season sales to buy clothes?

myLot reputation of 90/100. Citizen_Stuart (516)   ranked 137 out of 2,795 in frugal living  4 months ago

Because it's cheaper. You can usually save 25% in end of season sales, sometimes more.

I pick up change off the ground whenever I see it.Now a days when I go groceryshopping I buy whatever is cheapest and sometimes will go without certain things to insure that I still have money left over, but hey times are hard.I shop whenever I see a sale on and try to buy the cheapest but nice gifts I can.I need to try and save money so if it takes being cheap then thats what I have to do.

I don't see any of those things as being cheap, I think they are all sensible. I also do most of them because I need to. I don't have a car so I walk everywhere. I buy all my clothes and books second hand from charity shops, or end of season sales, never new.

I would be quite happy to go on a date with a man who would cook for me and take me to a free museum, and I have done before now. I don't choose men on how much money they have or how much they spend. I would rather be with someone who is sensible about money than with a man who spends more than he can afford.

I check the vending machines as well. At my sons' school, I am a very active volunteer. Somedays I might be at school almost the full day. The coke machine they have there sometimes spits out free cokes! Even if I don't want anything to drink, I always push a button as I go by, just in case:)
We tend not to buy many books or DVDs. I just put myself on the waiting list at our local library for all of the newest releases. Sometimes we may have to wait up to a month, but think of the money we save.

I check in vending machines and pay phones for change. I shop in thrift stores and at garage sales for books and clothing. I mend my clothing rather than throwing it away until i cant mend it anymore.

I park in free parking then walk. I love going to free events and places. I hate to pay for anything extra. If i want a movie to watch I either borrow it from the library, a friend or rent it from the 1.50 movie place not the 5.00 movie place.

I unplug all electric items when not in use except for the fridge and alarm clock.

I reuse wrapping paper and gift bags.
