I was going to town to day on the interstate and a man was hitchhiking. he did look to good. Pretty down and out. The car in front of me pulled over and picked him up. Would you pick up someone on the side of the road if they were hitchhiking? I would stop if it were a woman and children. I would be to scared to pick up a single person. man or woman I would keep on going. What do you think? To many quacks in this world for me. I'm chicken.4 people like this

NO!! I never pick up a hitchhiker unless it is someone I know well. Don't do it! not even woman and children. Have you not heard of the man that picked up a woman and her children only to find she had a psycho boyfriend hiding in the bushes!! That has happened more than once and often enough for you to not take that chance. If you see a woman and kids hitching....call 911 to get them help. Just as you should not be picking them up....if she is legit....she should not be subjecting her children to the dangers of hitchhicking. They all could end up victims.

Calling 911 is a good idea. It is too scary to pick up strangers even if they have kids with them.

Nahhh I wouldn't sorry. If by some slim chance i did i would just have to truly believe from the bottom of my heart that that person was in total despair and had no more options. But even then, i could just call the police if it's that serious and have them assist the person. I have never picked up a hitchhiker and don't intend to. Those hitchhiking days were in back in the day but you just don't know who to trust now. I think most people want to help but the world we live in has just become so untrustworthy. That's just the cold hard truth.

I must have hitchhiked 50,000 miles in the eighties, all across Europe (several times, actually) and some parts of Asia. It was a way of life then, at least for me, and it was interesting, to say the least. So I always feel a special obligation when I see a hitchhiker. When it is a young person with a rucksack, I don't hesitate. It's 'jump in!', and off we go. Otherwise, if it is a person who is 'just hitching a ride' to the next town, I hesitate. As a rule, when my wife or kids are in the car, I don't pick them up. I feel bad about that, but times have changed, and there is a lot of crazy folks about. If I'm on my own, I tend to take them with me.

honestly i wouldnt pick up man, woman, or women with children, because these days you cant even trust people with kids cause they sometimes use their kids as bait.one day this women was in the parking lot at this walmart near my house and she had three kids with her and i watched her used the kids as a distraction so she could steal the persons purse and whatever was in the person' basket that she wanted. so i am sorry if you think i am wrong but i have two kid that i have to live for and i cant lose my life behind anyone.

I wouldn't pick anyone up. I agree that there are too many crazies out there. The days of hitchhiking have long passed in my opinion. It's simply not safe anymore. If there are people at an abandoned vehicle that appear to be in trouble I would call the police, but I wouldn't stop. Somewhat sad but true.

No, I don't ever pick up hitchikers, unless its someone I know, that may be having car trouble or something. There are too many crazy people in this world today, and its a shame, you can't trust anybody anymore. They may try to rob you and beat you up and take your car, you never know..

For me it all depends on the situation. Most times while I'm out driving I have my children with me, so am very hesitant to pick up a hitch hiker.
If someone's car had broken down and they needed help I'd be more inclined to stop, however I don't have a cell phone. I think if I did have a cell phone and I was not in a rush I would stop and offer my phone, but not a ride.
I have been offered rides and help in the past when I've had car troubles and things of that nature, so I'd like to be able to help another motorist, but as I said... right now I'm just unable. Perhaps someday.

I definitely wouldn't. I know it sounds bad, and I should probably be more trusting - but there have been too many strange incidents in this country recently concerning hitchhikers - and in actual fact, it's the hitchhikers themselves who've come off worst, so I definitely wouldn't do that, either!

Yes I have picked up hitch hikers. You really have to use judgement. Best to rely on your personal instinct. Better to always be safe than sorry. I have picked up hitchers all my life and never had any problems and met some nice characters as well. I am male and I think this makes a difference. I have also hitched a time or to and I give thanks to the people who picked me up. Times are changing and It is very important to always be on your guard and not ridewith or pick up any one in Question. Is a ride or rider worth your life? Good post. :)
