The problem is that it's usually soybean oil and the cost of soybeans has gone way up and so has the oil. But if you can get it and clean it from a restaurant, then it might be cheap enough if your cleaning method is cheap.
I read somewhere that Mercedes are the best for that kind of conversion. Take care

Deisels don't work well up here, we have cold weather about 8 months of the year, at least 3 months, deisels have to be plugged in to keep them warm enough so they don't freeze, but in warmer areas, I can see how this could be really, really great.

Running a vehicle on vegetable oil is a great idea. It would save a lot of money on gas, probably end a few wars because no one would be competing for oil, and it would be great for the environment.

I've actually seen the mythbusters try this on discovery and it does work. It tells us that the goverment is making a lot of money on the oils and they have a lot of other options to run cars but they merely won't allow us to because there is still oil. If we run out there will be cars running on water, oils or perhaps even stuff like goat milk; they just want to get as much tax money of us as long as they can.

There was a high school kid here in Kansas that did that for fun. He converted his old car, and one for his brother, and then he now has a waiting list.

WOW there have been a lot of articles on this. I think this is the fourth I have responded to just from my 'circle of friends'.
Yes there are converter kits that will take 'dirty' fry oil and convert it into usable bio-diesel.
You need a car that is a diesel (gas engines will not work) and you need a solid block car (which usually means driving an old clunker).
I have a friend who does it and he said that when all it said and done (and he gets the dirty oil for free) it is about 75ยข/gallon to run his old mercedes.
SWEET!
Thanks

This is a good idea if you can afford to pay for it all at once. Then as the fellow said, There are now thieves stealing cooking oil from the restaurants plus them charging for the used oil. Even then it would be good since the oil would be used instead of being dumped or put into cattle feed

This man has a great idea. I am sure it has saved him a lot of money also. Gas prices are getting very high.

It's great sharing to us this article. It is indeed very interesting. I think that with the soaring prices of oil, people should look for alternatives for the conventional oil. For people who are dependent on their cars but do not want to spend that much, having alternatives would be great. It is important though that we use something that would be compatible with our car.

Yes it can be done lol.... only catch is, our government are trying to outlaw it and charge taxes of 36% on cooking oil lol. And asking supermarkets to raise their prices on oil. I think they are afraid of loosing a great ammount of money over this...:-)

The only thing I've heard about this is that vehicles run slower than normal if you use this method. I think all the shcool buses in Arlington County Virginia (Al Gore's hometown) use this method sucessfully.
