I am from the south and I love grits. I like my grits with lots of butter, salt and pepper, crumble up some bacon in them and slide an over easy egg on top. Then I stir it all together and dig in. Yummy!! Grits with cheese is good too. So do you like grits?

This is another one of those American terms that I'm completely confused by! What on earth are grits? I'm guessing from how you eat it that it's got a potato base. Am I right?

LOL!! Grits are Hominy (a corn like product) that has the hull and germ removed then it is dried and ground up to a sand like texture. you cook it with either milk or water (I am a water person myself) till it is creamy and soft.

Ok Hominy is corn that has been soaked in lye. Makes it swell and changes the nature of the corn.

i live in canada and have always wanted to know what grits are...can you describe them? i can let you know what poutine is - its french fries smothered in gravy and a cheez whiz kind of substance (definitely an aquired taste and i dont like it!)

the poutine sounds like it would be better without the cheese stuff. I like cheese fries and I like gravy on fries but not keen on mixing them. Grits are hominy that has been dried and ground and then you cook them much like cream of wheat.

I have no idea what they are! We don't have them in Australia, and I've read about them often - but there's never any explanation of what they actually are. Is it cereal?

They are really hard to describe. You can also compare them to polenta cause grits can be eaten with every meal as a side dish it is not just breakfast food.

It sounds delicious - I wonder why they don't send any to Australia? I love polenta and creamed rice, so it would be great to try it! Also, I've often read about 'hot biscuits' which are apparently eaten with things like fried chicken in the South. For a while we were getting Hersey chocolate - but then it stopped coming. I think Whitmans chocolates are from America, aren't they? And M&Ms? I know I'm really getting off the subject now, but another thing I've always wondered about are Hostess Twinkies.

I lived in the South for 25 years. Grits are the one thing I just couldn't take a shine to. Now sausage gravy and biscuits... There a restaurant on my way to work here in Arizona that serves them and they're superb. I stop there at least 1 morning a week. I could also go for some country ham with redeye gravy right now.

Biscuits and gravy are one of my all time favorites. Love it love it love it. Grits are something you either love or hate. I love them everyone else in my house hates them. Go figure.

I don't hate them, I can just do without them. Since I wrote about them this morning, I've been very tempted to drive into West Sedona and have some sausage biscuits and gravy :)

I just love biscuits and gravy. My grandmother made the best biscuits and gravy. I remember when we would stay overnight at my grandma's house and she would get up super early in the morning and make me biscuits and gravy. ....maybe thats why I equate biscuits and gravy with love. LOL.

I love grits. I did not eat them for a long time, but then I started buying them again recently. I like to do cheesy grits mostly. I love them with lots of butter, salt, and pepper too. Give me some grits, fried eggs, and bacon and I am a happy camper.

Your not the only one from the south and yes I do like grits. Give me some butter an a little sugar, that will do. I have had cheese grits but not crazy about them, they were instant though. I'm not really crazy about the salt and pepper in them. I guess I have always had them with sugar and butter to the point that is the way that I like them. With some eggs and sausage on the side and toast with butter and jelly. That is a great breakfast.

I don't but my husband does.. We are from the south also, but when he was driving a truck and had a stop somewhere up north, he stopped for breakfast and ordered grits, the girl looked at him like he was crazy and said, "what a grit".. He likes them with butter and black pepper, plain, or with cheese.. My mother-in-law used to make grits and then mold them into a loaf pan, then chill and slice them and fry them until crispy.. Everyone said they taste exactly like a piece of fried fish..

Hi. sweetdesign. Yes, I do love grits so much! I love to add butter, cheese and black pepper in it. I plan to try adding bacon to my grits since many people say that it tastes really good this way. I am from the south as well and I love grits too!

Yes I love grits a lot, but in my country (Iraq) we cooked it in a different ways: -cooked as you cook the rise and but with it some pomegranate's tart it make it so sweet. -my wife use to cooked it with boiled water then put some cooked meat with it then make it like small balls with some almonds and gooseberry then cooked with hot oil it is so delicious, I hope I can send you some to taste it. and some other ways I dont know how they do it. Anyway grits is so good and you could cook it in a different ways. Have a nice day.

That actually sounds very good. I use to eat gooseberries when I was a kid and we had gooseberry bushes along our driveway. I haven't had any in years though.

I've just never gotten into grits. Maybe, I need to try them again; it's been a while, and people's tastes do change over time.

I too am from the south and was raised having grits on many occassions for breakfast. My hubby is from the north and he had never heard of grits until he met me! I am not a fan of the little flavored packages of grits, I prefer to buy them in the large bag and fix my own. I like a little butter on my grits and sometimes, I am in the mood for a tiny bit of sugar. My daughter and son like the flavored varieties, and are partial to the bacon flavored and cheese flavored grits. My hubby will eat them now, but isn't a huge fan like myself!
