I cannot believe this!! |

I have a friend that called me yesterday. Her grandson was in the hospital for 3 weeks. He is 16 and has Cerebral Palsy. His parents and grandparents could not stay with him all the time he was there, due to all the time they had off for other things dealing with him. They went to see him, and he told them that a nurse, and told her name, had come in the room, looked at him and said "You can't talk, so you cannot tell on me." She then hauled off and punched him in the stomache. He had had surgery on his stomache just a week before, and had always been quiet when this nurse came in the room, so she did not realize that he could talk.
They confronted the head nurse, the police, and a lawyer and was told they could not do anything because it would be his word against hers. The police told them that they could have pressed charges, but it was too late because it happened 2 days ago. The hospital would do nothing to her because they had not had complaints before? What happened to patients safety, and abuse. They would have arrested me because I would have went balistic, if my child had told me something like that, and even had the name of the nurse, and no one would listen. I would be on the news, writing the hospital, calling the newspaper, anything I could to bring attention to this. The only reason she did it was because she thought no one would find out, and probably does it to alot of children that are not able to talk.
How would you handle something like this? I have a son that cannot talk and it just devastates me that someone could do something like this, especially in a childrens hospital.

1. capirani (941) | 1 year ago | That's horrible that the nurse might get away with abusing that child. I know bad things do happen in health care facilities. The caregiving careers tend to draw a lot of people who should not be in those careers. At least the complaint has been made and hopefully the hospital will keep their eyes on this nurse a lot more closely in the future. Red flags tend to appear around people like that and get overlooked all the time. But now that at least this one complaint has been registered, maybe the other red flags will be more noticeable, and maybe some other former patients might have the courage to speak out. The child who spoke up is very brave and I hope he is commended by his family and friends for that.

Thoroughrob (7918) | 1 year ago | From what I understand, she would get nothing out of it, according to police and the lawyer. She did this because she was mad about something when she entered the room, and took it out on him, because she did not think he could talk and tell on her.

4. ljegbers (5761) | 1 year ago | I'm reading this and it just tore me up Thoroughrob. This is excatly why my children are never left alone with anyone! Any babysitter that comes into my home I spend 6 to 8 weeks with her here to ensure that she/he can be trust worthy.
The mental mantality of a NURSE!!! There are places online to issue complaints. Even contact the state medical board for "what's it's name" where they have to renew their liscence every year. Issue a complain and include the police report and statement from your lawyer, even include that the hospital would not repremand her.
This goes against code of ethics and it is taken very seriously by the state. I know a gal that applied and got her home health care liscence and someone complained about her and she had her liscence taken away.
They need to check out the medical liscense board (there's another name for this but I'm just too upset right now) and issue a complaint with all supporting documents.

Thoroughrob (7918) | 1 year ago | If they all gave me that answer, I would have been put in jail, because I would have went through the roof. If I would have even been accused of doing that to my son, they would have been there taking him out of the home. It is just crazy that they will do nothing.

GardenGerty (20323) | 1 year ago | Can you encourage your friend to take the advice of ljegbers. I think this is right, that the hospital needs to be brought up for review. I do not know if they have state surveyors for hospitals or not, but they should. Complaints like this in my state would warrant surveyors to come out and investigate. If nothing else they should put it on a news show or something else. I would make sure that the hospital got all of the bad press it could handle from this.

6. MSV1313 (2243) | 1 year ago | That is horrible. How would I handle it? I'd probably end up in jail for what I'd do to the nurse IF they ever found her body. I'd also be doing what you said, making my voice heard to every outlet possible until justice was served. That is just sickening. I feel so bad for that boy!

7. JoyfulOne (4248) | 1 year ago | OMG! How horrible! She should not be allowed to get away with stuff like that. If it was me, I'd get one of those little Nanny Cams and put it into a little bear (or other gift) and stick it on the shelf with other presents he got. I would keep it aimed at his bed. If she did this once, then she might come back at him to 'get even' for telling on her or something. If it was my kid I would be causing an unbelieveable stink over it and not let it drop. People like her should never ever be allowed to take care of kids. I hope they catch her in the act and she gets what's coming to her. I hope that punch didn't do any damage to his surgical site or anything else. How scary for both the boy and his relatives! At the very least I would insist that this person not be allowed to tend to him, or even be in his room.

8. sweetdesign (2194) | 1 year ago | That is horrible!! I would be raising such a stink that the hospital would wish they had done something to keep it quiet. That is not right. She should have atleast been investigated thouroughly and sanctioned because that is plain and simple abuse.

9. newtondak (2125) | 1 year ago | It doesn't matter that it's a few days later - they can still press charges - the police are just blowing it off because they don't want to deal with it.

thebohemianheart (2703) | 1 year ago | I agree. It could have happened a week earlier and they could still press charges. What is wrong with people who take positions that are supposed to serve and protect and help us get well, that they can even think the way these people obviously do?
| |
|
|
newtondak (2125) | 1 year ago | There should be some evidence of bruising or other damage in the stomach area - especially with the previous surgery. They should take him to another doctor that isn't associated with the hospital and have him examined for evidence of the abuse. If the police won't file charges, they can file a civil suit against the hospital and the nurse who hit him.

10. mikeysmom (1980) | 1 year ago | this is a horrible story. it is so frightening. i know people have to work but it is a good argument for not leaving our kids in the hands of others. you just cannot trust anyone anymore. i think the hospital should be ashamed of themselves for not delving into this further. why would a 16 year old make up a story like this for heaven's sake??? there is no real protection for our children. it is a sick and twisted world in which we live and i see more and more sickening proof of it everyday. i hope the boy is alright. it will be so hard for him to trust anyone after this and well he shouldn't.
