Are you a messy person or a tidy one? |
| |
| I have to say that I love to see a tidy house with clear work surfaces, smart and smooth covers on the furniture, maybe flowers on the table and everything looking fresh and nice. I, however, am complete rubbish at achieving that (or keeping it that way if I or someone else has achieved it!) I will leave papers, cooking utensils and food all over the table; pile books and papers on the floor or any available chair; leave dishes in the sink until I need to use them again (and so have to wash them) and generally behave like the proverbial pig. (As a matter of fact, pigs are very tidy and clean animals. They get their reputation from the way that we keep them penned up in tiny sties and from their natural habit of digging for roots in the earth). Well, as I was saying, a tidy and fresh house gives me great pleasure yet I seem to be always putting things out of order and starting something new before I have finished the last thing I was doing! I once took one of those psychological tests that ask all sorts of apparently irrelevant questions and map your character out on a 16 point scale. It said that I was untidy, that my workplace was likely to be full of files and folders and papers (very true) and then the tester said that this was actually a GOOD thing and that it meant that I was creative! OK, so which do you think is really more creative? To make a home (or workplace) which is just so (maybe even Feng Shui correct), with pretty chintzes or artily modern furniture, and to make sure (on pain of death) that it stays that way ... or to be happy-go-lucky, come-and-go, do-it-when-it-needs-to-be-done and know where everything is ... somewhere, so long as nobody else moved it ? What type are you and do you love or hate (or just tidy up after) the other kind? | | | | | |

| | I must admit to OCD!! On days that I mop the kitchen floor which is ceramic tile. I usually mop it 2x that day and then spend the remainder of the day very carefully watching anyone and everyone who walks on it. Vaccuming pretty much goes the same way. Hubby tells me that I need medication for this little issue. Although you will not hear him complain about a tidy house, clean floors and no dirty dishes in the sink or on the counter for him to see. Plus along with all of that he has the coffee maker all ready and waiting for him to simply press a button in the morning. Plus the feng shui thing...it keeps me on my toes with the house being clean. Now my children on the other hand...OCD with making and keeping a mess. | | | | | | |

| | I am a rubbish person as of now. I used to be a tidy when I am alone, but as I got my mother to look after things now I usually leave things in a dustbin sort of way at home, but at home I am one of the most tidiest persons. So it all depends. Isn't it? | | | | | | |

| | I think I agree that 'clean' and 'tidy' are two different things entirely (though they are often put together in one sentence). 'Clean' is fairly relative. One can be spotlessly clean where it shows or one can be fanatically clean to the extent of washing every last plate that has been even looked at by a biscuit ... on the other hand one can be careful about surfaces where food is prepared and served but dust can be left to lie where it will for the moment until one has a cleaning moment. One of your daughters has already given evidence against you, I'm afraid, so I suspect that you are not quite as messy as you make yourself out to be! | | | |

| | I'm in the second category of clean. Dirty kitchens and bathrooms I hate but dust can wait for another day. I am quite practised at tidying, I just don't do it regularly. That daughter is fighting a losing battle as her partner seems to think it's his job to make a mess and hers to clear up after him. At least she's teaching her boys differently. | | | |

| | 'That daughter' (though we have never met) seems to me to be quite a lot like her mother. Pirates and even crocodiles can be softened by the Wendiness in all of us, especially in the face of all the Peters and Lost Boys. | | | |

| | Strange you should say that as I have always thought she was exactly like her dad. I always put the fact that she drives me nuts down to her being the middle one, maybe you're right and she is like me and that's the real reason she worries me more than the other two. | | | |

| | I am "creative" too! Well, I am not quite as bad as you say you are but I do have trouble getting things tidy and keeping them that way. I think it would be less of a challenge for me if I didn't live with someone else who thinks he shouldn't tidy up because it's not all his mess. I get very frustrated tidying up after people who don't even attempt to be tidy. I do try and, if other people try then that's fine but I find that I just can't do it sometimes. My mum tidied my kitchen when I first moved house. I don't know how she did it because I can't find spaces for all the things she tidied! I do like to have a clean and tidy house but I can't do it. Although when I see other people with small children and an immaculate house, I wonder if they actually spend time with their children or if they just keep them locked up or something so they don't make a mess! | | | | | | |

| | I'm afraid that males, as a general rule, have a more proprietary feeling about 'mess' than females. In male terms, 'my mess' is something one is working on and is not really a mess - it just looks that way. It may also be something one has actually finished doing and will clear up 'in a minute'. 'Your mess', on the other hand, is something that you were doing and should have tidied away because you have transparently moved on to something else ... like dealing with a fractious child or ironing a shirt that I needed urgently. In female terms, a mess is a mess, whoever created it and there is (in some women) an urgency that it should be tidied (if not exactly cleared away out of sight). There is a problem, of course, in that none of us are purely male or purely female and that messes tend to mess with each other so the distinction between 'your mess' and 'my mess' can be blurred at times (mostly in favour of 'your mess'). I am fascinated that your mother (should I reveal that here?) 'organised' your kitchen for you so efficiently yet claims not to be a tidy person herself, LOL! | | | |

| | Mother is very tidy with her "mad cleaning". I can do a better job if I'm having a cleaning spree but it's a matter of keeping it clean. There also seems to be a bit of a thing in my family whereas none of us mind too much helping to clean and tidy in each other's homes, it's just our own we have trouble with. :) | | | |

| | You made me laugh (about tidying each other's homes)! I used to be (and still am) a 'washing-up wizard' in other people's homes (I actually prefer to do dishes - and to cook - than to socialise). | | | |

| | Are you me? I would rather wash up than socialise in other people's places sometimes. Maybe that's why we are like this. We don't have anything to get away from at home but elsewhere there are people to avoid so doing the washing up or something is a perfect excuse not to make small talk. | | | |

| | I am a very organized and tidy person not only because I like a clean home but because it saves me a lot of time if I am searching for something. I love tidying up and do it once a week. I guess if we are tidy it passes on to our children because my child is also tidy and organized. Also an uncluttered home brings happiness and prosperity as per feng-shui. Whereas clutter attracts negativity. | | | | | | |

| | I am happy for you that you love tidying. I am undecided as to whether clutter attracts negativity or is the result of it - or perhaps of some kind of positive force that forges ahead like a boat, leaving troubled waters in its wake. Your philosophy, at any rate, works for you. | | | |

| | Right now we are remodling so it's hard to be tidy. Putting wood floors in means moving "this from here to there" and it's a constant clutter (which I hate). But, once the work is done, it will look good so I put up with it. I don't like cleaning up after others. I think if you are a grown-up, you should do it for yourself. Years ago, I was almost a perfectionist with cleaning and house details. Now, I am actually relaxing a bit in my mind as I see that everything doesn't have to always be in perfect order. lol, it can be fun just looking for something that you lost in the process of moving . | | | | | | |

| | Well Owlwings, I guess I am a mixture, I have clutter EVERYWHERE and my home is chaotic because of it. I don't like seeing things all over the bench, in fact I like to see the bench clean and clear of clutter and somewhere to make a sandwich apart from shifting stuff from here to there in order to find a clear spot. But then again I can't relax if things are too darn tidy. HUGZ from Kitten1954 | | | | | | |

| | I think I'm very much like you, Kitten. I could probably be very happy in your house, in fact. As long as there is a clear spot to make a sandwich (or slice onions and meat for a casserole), I can probably live with it. If I had to clear the space, you might hear me grumble a bit - especially if it was not 'my mess'. I would be very unhappy, though, if I was constantly reminded that I hadn't put the knife away in its proper place the minute I'd finished with it or something like that | | | |
