The 1950's Woman...

Well you just described my great grandmother. but then again kids back in the 50's helped their parents with the house and they respected their parents and had chores that they did everyday no questions ask and woman in some cases and they felt they had to be strong for their families so they didn't let their emotions show and basically buried them under the rug. Nowdays woman don't or most don't we let others know when we aren't happy,depressed, and everything in between. Nowdays we don't grin and bear it like they used to. Well some do. My grandmother worked and my grandpa also but he always helped her clean he done dishes until he could no longer stand up to do them and he was always cleaning till he got to sick. My grandma was a hard worker but she had a loving husband that helped with what he could in the household he even cooked. Maybe it is all the junk we put into our bodies nowdays that makes us like we are today. There are somedays I don't even want to get out of bed much less clean, but I have to force it. Alot of woman are working one to two jobs to make ends meet now days an work for 8-16 hour days. When I was working I was so tired I would fall asleep in the bathtub most nights. Each and everyone of us is different what makes one tick my not another..We don't take pride in our houses or ourselves. Some have a like or leave it atitude.

in India,today's woman is like 1980 woman from ur country. they handled half of these kind of work u written. like care of kid,kept the house, cooked faimly meals and still manage to look like woman

I believe I am a strong woman, although I use to be stronger in health than I am now. In the old days, I remember that my aunt and I did much of the work in the home and helped granny out with the canning and we did the laundry even ironing everything. We satrted breakfast for everyone in the morning and cleaned up afterwards. Then started cooking whatever was going to be ate for lunch, cleaning up after everyone. Then starting dinnner, watching all meals while doing other house work. We dusted everything, swept, mopped, made beds, picked up and cleaned up. We helped make quilts and did many other things. Since this was the way I was taught, it carried on into my adulthood.
After every meal we swept and mopped the kitchen floors. I have been kown to sweep numerous times a day and mop at least 3 times a day. Depending on if it was needed or not. I cook 3 good meals a day. And clean my home. I have done this even when I worked I kept house and cooked everyday. Needless to say my days were very full. I got up before everyone else and was the last one going to bed. Because I didn't do so much when my husband was home. UNless he was off of work for the whole day.
Now I'm at home alone most times, unless my ganchildren come over or my husband is home for a few days to a week. I do as much as I possibly can even pushing myself no matter how badly I feel.

I think part of it was that they ate better food (no chemicals) and there was less pollution (respiratory problems slow us down). Also, kids were expected to keep their clothes reasonably clean, and usually wore the same outfit days in a row, so there was less laundry to do (there were Sunday clothes that you didn't dare get dirty and were generally put away at the end of the day, not in the wash).
And then there were the drugs... "Mother's little helper"

I think people ate real food and had strong families, too. Now people eat cocoa puffs and are far away from their families. I think people are sick more often because of polution, too.

To compare women of the 50's to women of today is like comparing apples to oranges, it just doesn't mesh.

Hell it's not even so much women as it is comparing moms.

Back then they had very little to contend with as far as taking care of their kids. They didn't have the problem with all the drugs out there that we have to face in protecting our children from.

They didn't really have to worry about preditors attacking their children if they let them outside to play and didn't always keep them in sight. We do.

So yea it was easy for them, they could send their kids outside to play and not worry about them getting snached up, offered drugs, run over by a car, attacked by a gang, or any of the stresses mothers today deal with.

So of course moms are tired. We've got a whole different set of issues to contend with.

Not to mention those of us who do stay home full time, the stuff we do everyday.

I prepare 3 meals a day in my house, I clean EVERYDAY, do the bills, balance the budget, make sure the kids have a balance of education and fun EVERYDAY, constantly make sure nothing happens to them if we do have to go out.

NO I don't run around in dresses and high heels all day, but I don't like those types of clothing.

I am beyond a strong woman, I'm a wife, a mom, and a superhero.

Every generation says theirs was better,my grandma says the same,but there are advantages and disadvantages in every era. Yes before the mothers would take care of the kids, house, husband and be great about it,but maybe it was because that was really their calling in life,most moms didn´t go to school so they lived their stay at home lives pleasently.Nowadays almost everybody has an education therefore aspirations and ambitions.Put a woman like that as a stay at home mom and she´ll go crazy and won´t even raise the kids right, she´ll always resent being there. Besides, the stress and problems we cope with nowadays is greatly superior than in the past.But i do agree that some women do complain too much about working at home.

My grandma was a strong woman like that, I only wished I could be like her. She was always doing something in the house, plus she would be outside too, doing some kind of yardwork, and she always seemed to be on time with every meal, she would also have some kind of pie or pastry made, when she did that, I don't know. I don't think I ever seen her just sitting down and resting, she was always up and about. I don't have any kids myself, and I'm a stay at home wife, but I still don't have enough time to get things done during the day, besides being on Mylot..lol. I don't know how they did it...Have a good day

I was born in 1951 and remember my Mother and Grandmother..taking care of their families(my Parents had 6 kids)cleaning,cooking,laundry in wash tubs,hng on lines and ironed everything..and i mean everything..there was no conveniences like there is now, but also there wasn't that processed food that harms everyone, or microwaves or as much eating out stuff..
Most was grown from our gardens, and we ate more vegetables and not as much starches or grease in our food..milk wasn't poisoned like it is now with growth hormones,and hardly anything in the air too..as we get older our bodies aren't liking all this chemical stuff..and Dr.'s are so free to prescribe meds to anyone..instead of people using herbs to heal..
Life was different then oh yes....playing in the neighborhood till dinner time meant less stress on the mom's..now they are afraid to let them out of the house and are worn out...

Yes twoey, those women had a secret it was called respect from their children. I remember when I was a kid, I would not have dared left my socks on the floor for my Mother to pick up. When I got up from the table, my dishes went with me to the kitchen. If I spilled water in the bathroom I had better either get the mop or dry it with tissue. In other words women of the 50's taught their children to be self reliant. Yes in most cases the men were treated like the king of the castle, but,they did go out to bring home the bacon, if a man didn't work and support their family back then they weren't respected, and when they got home they did their part as Fathers. I remember too well the days of 8 hr dread, waiting in my Dad to get home, because my Mom was at her last straw and uttered the dreaded, "Wait til your Dad gets home!" I would have rather a tiger bite my arm off. Men backed their wives role in the home. You better listen to your Mother, or you will deal with me. This is the way I try to run my home today. It doesn't always work out that way. Kids today see so many of their friends being disrespectful brats, and they think well let me see how far I can push that button, but my children will tell you, my button doesn't extend very far. I expect them to pick up after themselves, clean their place at the table, keep their rooms straight. If they don't they lose their privilages. I tell them watching TV, playing video games, etc. is not a right it is a privilage you earn the right to do these things.
