The 1950's Woman... |
|
Women of the 1950’s were strong women. They handled the kids, the house, meals, laundry, dressed in dresses and pumps and still had time to greet their Hubby at the door with a cocktail. My Moms grandma was something like that. She took care of the kids, worked on the farm, tended to the animals, kept the house, cooked family meals (none of that Hamburger Helper in their house), sewed and still managed to look like a woman. Where they got all the energy is beyond me.
I see women all the time barely keeping their houses livable or their kids clothed and fed. Their wore out and tuckered out by noon. I know some work and that’s understandable but what about those that are at home all day? Is it all in their mind…they think they should be tired so they are? Or did women of the ‘50’s have a secret weapon? I doubt that I could do a third of the stuff my great grandma did in a day and still have the energy to do it again the next day and they didn’t have near the conveniences we have today. I love to hear my Mom and my Grandma talk about my great grandma b/c she really was a strong woman.
Are you a strong woman…going the distance every day or just barely making it through? Was your mom or grandma a strong woman when it came to running a home? How do you think they did it?

The writer has rightly observed that woman in the past had been maintaining the total house holding alone apart from discharging other social responsibilities. Now days either the young women either are lethargic or have not the capacity to do too much. I think the housewives do discharge all the functions and the working woman to do the house hold chores but I think have less time. They are also doing work all the day in the office and maintaining homes say double responsibility. I have great respect for women.
How do u see it.Please comment.

22. abbey19 (1750) | 1 year ago | I was a child in the 50's, and I remember the time so vividly. We lived with my mother's parents in Scotland as my father had left us, so my mother raised all 3 of us single handed. She would get up at 5.30 every morning to bake the bread for the day, and on a Sunday morning she would also make all the yummy stuff - cakes, cookies, pies, etc. She did all her laundry by hand - no luxury of a washing machine - every Monday, (we had no electricity then), and it would take her all day. She kept our home spotless, and she went out to work 3 days a week as well! My siblings and I were dressed good, and we were kept clean. She always seemed to be in the kitchen cooking! I don't know where she got the energy from! The women in those days would put some of today's women to shame - and look at all the 'conveniences' we have today! However, some of it must have rubbed off on me, because I was the same when I was raising my children. I was the first up in the morning and the last one to go to bed at night (still am). I wonder if my kids will look back one day and see me the way I remember my mother and grandmother?

23. Meljep (1345) | 1 year ago | You are right. Women of the 1950's were very strong. They took pride in everything they did. More women in the 21st century work in the public workplace and therefore the house, children, laundry, meals, etc take 2nd place to their jobs. It's hard to do 2 full time jobs well, and keeping up with a home and family IS a full time job. Usually it's the home that suffers when a woman works a full time job outside the home. My grandfather always said the one reason why he married my grandmother was that he saw that she was a good worker. He was farmer and knew he needed someone who could keep things together while he was in the fields.

27. lexus54 (2665) | 1 year ago | The women of the 50's are a great tribute to all the womenfolk. Mostly they are our mothers, aunts, grandmothers and grandaunts. The times they live in are unlike today. They are more domesticated, and so their energies are focused more on the home and family. They are hardworking, devoted, and have a strong sense of duty to looking after the home and bringing up family. Most are not privileged with a good education, yet that didn't stop them from struggling and making self-sacrifices so that their families will have a better life than theirs when they grow up. Indeed they are strong women, and get our utmost admiration for their dedication, sweat and toil.
The world today has indeed changed from the past decades. The women of today grow up with different mindsets and expectations, different outlooks of life, different drive and ambition, and views bringing up family from a different viewpoint. Women are today more well-traveled, worldly in outlook and strive for independence, so they are less inclined to be home-bound. That's probably because they have better educational and work opportunities, so many work hard at building up a career so that they can be independent. They strive to divide their time between advancing their careers and looking after the home and family. The kind of stresses and pressures they encounter are different from the 50's women. I'd say they also need to be strong, but in the way that society and the world demand of them in today's environment.

28. eeyore39 (3181) | 1 year ago | The secret you talk about is called "EXPECTATIONS". The women knew that was expected of them as a member of the family. That was their role. So they did what was expected of them and did it very well. They were indeed strong. Most women during that time did not work outside of the home. Being a domestic engineer is a full time job to be effective. Todays world is completely different. The women in a lot of cases must work to help support the family. Society has changed the roles of both the husband and the wife and I must say I don't always think it has been for the better. I say that because the children are the ones who are suffering due to this change. Back in Moms day she was always there for the children. Today there are kids who don't even see their parents at all during the day. Some even have to raise themselves. Not the best of situations I don't think.

29. katsmeow1213 (4915) | 1 year ago | You know what I think? I think women of today are spoiled. Women of the 50's were tired and worn, but they knew they weren't allowed to show it or complain about it. Not because it wasn't accepted, but because that was a woman's life, and she was happy and proud of it. Women were proud to serve their families and care for their home. Now women only want to complain about what they don't have or don't get. They are spoiled and want more and more, ignoring the blessings they already have.
