I do not think any circumstance grants a government to restrict our civil liberties. Once that is done, which It has, we tread on difficult territory. What will stop the government from going further into our personal lives. This is at the point where the terrorist have changed the fundalmentals of our lives. We as Americans shall never live in fear. Holla back and let me know what you all think.

As Ben Franklin said, those that would give up liberty for freedom deserve neither and will lose both.

Oh, the rights of Americans were being encroached upon by their own government far before the attacks of terrorists. We know for a fact that the government has kept an eye on us - even without warranted approval, for some time. The Patriot Act just makes it "legal" in the name of security.
Under no circumstances should our civil liberties be compromised, but sadly, there's nothing to stop the government from doing so. There's so many people on either side who are willing to lay down and be a doormat for their government to walk all over.

How do we change this? Well, it starts with refraining from giving the authorities a free pass. No more of this "well, it's in our best interests" boloney. Know your rights, and don't be afraid to be called a "whiner" or "looney" by your fellow "doormat citizens" when the government oversteps their bounds and you complain or do something about it. The worst possible thing for our country is to lie down and take whatever the government dishes out just in the same of national security. I fear my government more than ever will fear terrorists - this is exactly what our forefathers DIDN'T want to happen.

First, welcome to myLot! It's great to bring in new ideas with new myLotters.
I don't think there's ever been a good enough excuse to curtail our civil liberties. Under the current paranoid Administration, we've been wiretapped without a need for a court's permission. We're tracked on the internet all the time. Our phones, whether landline or cellular, are monitored at any time. The GPS might be a great way to get directions, but it also means having everything we door say in the car monitored -- get a map!
Terrorism has cause us to live in enough fear to change a lot of the rules for governments, courts and even employment. Somehow, there's a tinge of fascism attached to everything.
How can we fight back? I'll do whatever it takes, short of imposing on the rights of others!

Hey, thanks for the response and I am happy to be on Mylot. It seems that no matter what our information is being catalogued and put into some computer somwhere. That feeling is scary and I can only imagine what it would be like further into the future.

Have you read Brave New World or 1984? Or even A Clockwork Orange? These show exactly what we're getting into, and that's far scarier than Huxley or Orwell expected!
