Ok Democrats, You Convinced Me!  email this discussion to a friend?

When McCain emerged as the Republican nominee for President, a lot of us Republicans bristled at the thought. McCain has been a thorn in the side of Republicans for a long time now, and we didn't think it was fitting to reward that with the White House.

For almost as long, the Democrats have been running an anti Bush campaign whose slogan seems to be "McSame" which would insinuate that Bush and McCain are one and the same. To turn insinuation into accusation they say that McCain voted with Bush 90% of the time... which I've checked out and it's basically true.

Conservatives bristled again at the very thought that McCain could be the same as Bush. I know I was one of the bristlers, but I'm starting to listen to the Democrats.

At the outset of this elongated campaign season, I said that I would check out all the candidates before making up my mind. I have since amended that to checking out all the candidates who will appear on the Wisconsin ballot. I mean, it might be fun to read up on the nominee for the Communist Party USA, but if I can't actually vote for him, then what's the point? Actually, what I learned when I did try to read up on the nominee for the Communist Party USA is that they don't have a nominee this year. They back Barack Obama 100%.

This morning I got to thinking, why shouldn't I listen to the Democrats? I'm a reasonable person who has always been willing to learn from, or listen to the advice of others. I mean, I don't agree with much of the Democrats' platform, but I do agree with some of it. If I can agree with some of their issues, maybe it isn't so far fetched that I can agree with one of their accusations against McCain.

McCain has apparently bucked against Bush 5% of the time. That made me wonder about what the percent of the time I've disagreed with Prs. Bush. I woudn't be surprised if the answer turned out to be "about 5%". I disagree with Bush on immigration, legalization of marijuana, capital punishment, and apparently the whole "man caused global climate change" thing.

The upshot of all this is, why should I (or conservatives in general) try to defend or argue against this 90% number? Why should we demand a similar comparison to Obama and Harry Reid. Why should we get defensive at all, especially since the accusation happens to be accurate... or at least reasonably close to fact.

I've like George Bush as a president. He got us through some pretty tough times, and did it all with the incompetent press, the democrats and eventually many of his own party trumping up every lie, libel, slander and slither they could come up with. He has been accused of everything from carrying out the attacks of 9/11 to aiming Hurricane Katrina directly at New Orleans and personally signing an order to blow up the flood walls.

A lot of people don't like him (judging by his approval rating), but then again Pelosi and Reid's congress is even lower, and Democrats don't seem to let that affect their oppinion of them. It used to be said that people in other countries hate Bush, but that myth was kind of dispelled when the candidates for leadership of Germany and France ran on a pro America platform, they won. Of course, the democrats didn't let a little thing like that change their minds, they went on with the same talking points and accusations as if nothign changed.

There were times I agreed with Prs. Bush put in retrospect, I shoudn't have. I defended Gen. Abizaid's strategies for fighting in Iraq and Afghanistant because I am a firm believer in letting the commanders on the ground call the shots. But as soon as Rumsfeld was out, and Robert Gates was in, Gen. Abizaid was replaced with Gen. Patreus, and a new, winning strategy was adopted, planned and implemented... and the result has been awe inspiring.

Most of what the left holds against Prs. Bush isn't even the job of the president. Campaign rhetoric notwithstanding, presidents don't create jobs private sector jobs, nor do they destroy them. Presidents aren't responsible for mitigation, preparation, response or recovery of declared disaster areas, yet the Democrats would have us believe that the president does.

In fact, I'm trying to find what detail of government isn't the responsibility of the president, according to the left. They seem to accuse Prs. Bush of wanting to be a dictator out of one side of their mouths and yet make demands on him that only a dictator would have the authority to pull off.

So, the way it looks right now, McCain is the best person for the job, simply because he resembles a president who has done a great job over the last 8 years (notice, I said "great", not "Fantastic").

By the same token, Obama has voted with Harry Reid and the Democrats almost 100% of the time and their approval rating makes Prs. Bush's look like straight 10s... ok, 8s. Out of the two people I'd rather see the next president "be the same as", I'd rather it be someone who was with Bush 90% of the time than with Reid probably even 10% of the time.

I know a few of you democrat Mylotters are going to jump on this, calling me a sheeple, Bushie, or worse, but before you start throwing insults around, remember, coming to this conclusion was based on your advice and information. If you don't like it when people take your advice, I'd say you better quit giving it! ;~D

Para, thank you for a refreshing way to wake up, have my morning coffee and enjoy some quiet before my day begins. You are one of a handful of people here that I can chose to agree to disagree with, yet still see an intelligent conversation.
I totally understand where you are coming from, even though I am not a McCain supporter, and as of yet have seen nothing that would even remotley make me change my mind about him.
I've wondered for a long time about the whole "90%" argument, I still don't agree with McCains voting record, but if you are a Republican I see where it makes sense. Thank you for shedding light, and putting it in a way that makes it understandable.
But I do have to say...Obama/Biden '08 :)

Coming from someone who doesn't agree with Ted, if it was me, your response would get the BR.
But I can say thank you for being reasonable, even if you don't agree.

I too will be voting McCain / Palin.

The thing about McCain is that he is possibly the only Republican who can win this year. True, a lot of us would like to have someone more conservative, but such a person could not draw the democratic votes that will be needed to win. I was not for McCain getting the nomination, but I'd rather have McCain / Palin winning the election than some suitably conservative Republican lose the election.

While I was not for McCain getting the nomination, I'm all for McCain / Palin winning the election.

So you would rather vote for the winner than vote for the person you think is best for the job?

In this age of staunch and rabid party line towing and adherence, 10% does indeed a maverick make. When even one vote in congress or one bill's support can get you branded as a traitor, it makes you an outright rebel. Anyway, thanks for this one Ted, another good post, love your logic sometimes. I read and got to thinking and it seems to be about where I am right now, though I am still considering voting constitution, haven't totaly made my decision yet, still some unasnwered things about the vp candidate, she seems great, but still waiting on a few things and still trying to reconcile my constitutional ideology with a big box vote.

Constitution party would have been one I'd consider, until I read their website. Like most 3rd parties they seem more reactionary than anything else. I wish 3rd parties would start telling us what they are about instead of telling us why they are better than X party.

I commend you for a very insightful post! I will be voting McCain/Palin in this year's election.

I doubt that there has ever been a President that didn't get criticized for some of their decisions. It's somewhat like being a parent - the children don't always like your decisions, and sometimes you have to take some very unpopular actions - "for your own good"!

I believe that President Bush has been presented with some very difficult problems/decisions over the past eight years and I don't believe that the Democratic candidates that opposed him would have been able to do the job as well as he has.

myLot reputation of 63/100. ParaTed2k (6357)   ranked 325 out of 3,985 in politics  4 years ago

The candidate I would fear the most is the one that doesn't get criticized.

myLot reputation of 74/100. newtondak (2145)   ranked 278 out of 3,985 in politics  4 years ago

That is very true! If no one criticized them, that would mean that they were able to convince everyone that they were right about everything - that would be very scary!

I liked reading that.. and really haven't a response.. It's interesting to me to note that anyone who knows anything about politics whatsoever, knows Senator McCain isn't a follower.. tho now it's quoted as gospel truth.. (ironic in a sad way)..

Very well argued. Being a Canadian I don't have a say in US politics, but if I did I still wouldn't vote McCain though because I don't think Bush was a good president, I think he was better then the critics give him credit for, but certainly a far cry from a good president. Really with our own election coming up in October I am more concerned with who will be the next Prime Minister (go Happy Jack) then who will be the next president. Your argument however was very well reasoned and extremely well worded, I think any Democrat would have difficulties debating your logic.

myLot reputation of 63/100. ParaTed2k (6357)   ranked 325 out of 3,985 in politics  4 years ago

But, contrary to Democrat rhetoric, McCain and Bush aren't the same person.

Democrats ALways have trouble debating logic. But they never let it stop them. xD

I haven't understood why the Democrats kept saying voting for McCain was the same as voting for Bush. It has almost been like they are running against Bush instead of McCain. I know the point they are trying to make, is McCain will have the same policies as Bush, but why not go head to head with McCain on his policies, instead of just running the same ads over and over. I would love to see McCain and O'Bama have a good old fashioned debate, head to head, toe to toe, come out swinging and may the best candidate win. I have heard both of them say they are not afraid to debate, so whats the hold up? Bring it on.

myLot reputation of 63/100. ParaTed2k (6357)   ranked 325 out of 3,985 in politics  4 years ago

They are still running against Bush. It kills them that they have never beat him in an election. Plus, they have been campaigning against him non-stop for 8 years now, old habits die hard.

I almost fell out of my chair when I read this discussion. The last time I respond to one of your discussions, which was one week ago I wrote this "What is the difference between Bush 2004 and McCain 2008, Kerry 2004 and Obama 2008? To me there is no difference between Bush and McCain, but Kerry was actually better than Obama. So using the logic of the opponent make the other candidate more exciting, McCain is an easy choice." Your response to me was "Ah, the old 'McSame" rhetoric. Read McCain's website instead of relying on the incompetent press for information. The war in Iraq and the need for troops in countries other than the US are two of only a few issues they agree on." I do not know if I should congratulate you on your decision or should I demand an apology! I am scratching my head on this issue.

myLot reputation of 63/100. ParaTed2k (6357)   ranked 325 out of 3,985 in politics  4 years ago

There are actually a lot of differences between McCain's policies and Bush's... but I'll agree with you that Kerry was much better than Obama. But then again, how much worse can you get than a bigot with a race card up his sleeve and an invented past?

Hello ParaTed,

Wow! I sure hope that this well formulated, well-penned discussion tops the daily discussions throughout the day. What a thought-provoker!!!

You have absolutely pinned 'the tail' on this elephant (as opposed to donkey) in your descriptions within this discussion. I honor your willingness to elevate sincere analysis above partisanship!!!

I would not challenge any part of your analysis. Instead, I would only add one point that pierced my consciousness leading up to the GOP Convention. That point is that McCain demonstrated that he places the well-being of the nation over his personal whims and wishes. Can anyone doubt that McCain would have preferred Joe Lieberman to be his running mate? Yet, McCain recognized that 'We The People' would not have been assuaged by that choice. So, he put the will of the nation above his own, and chose a Governor who would be able to connect with multiple, disinranchized voter blocks, and be able to inspire the nation to look toward future challenges rather than ruminate in rankor about America's willingness or unwillingness to position a woman in our offices of highest authority.

McCain's running-mate pick strikes me as not so unlike the honorable employee who welcomes the opportunity to train his or her predecessor -- without ego, for the sake of the well-being of the organization.

While I still fundamentally disagree with a few of McCain's two decades worth of legislative endeavors, specifically McCain-Feingold and McCain-Lieberman, and McCain-Kennedy, I figure we're all entitled to a difference of opinion now and again.

Suffice it to say, your point is an excellent one. If I agree with McCain more than 90% of the time, then pulling the lever shouldn't be a problem. Geesh, how many Americans can honestly say that they agree with their own spouse as often???

myLot reputation of 63/100. ParaTed2k (6357)   ranked 325 out of 3,985 in politics  4 years ago

Speaking of well-written, your comments here fit that bill completely. Many of us waited for McCain's decision on running mates, not as much to see who he would pick, but why and how.

I agree with you, his choice says a lot about him. Not just who he picked, but who he didn't.
