What are some of your favorite hymns? |
|
Our church is really into the new praise and worship music. I'm a part of the praise team and I am a big fan of contemporary Christian music too. But 2 weeks ago my church had an old-fashioned hymn sing! I think I was a kid the last time I went to one.
We sang "victory in Jesus", "Blessed Assurance", "When we all get to heaven", "It will be worth it all (when we see Jesus)"and so many more. The men in the congregation were especially in rare form and occasionally we would split the verses with the women singing one verse and the men the next.
What a way to worship and what a blessing to all who attended.
What are some of your favorite old hymns? Do you have any stories associated with them that you can share?

11. change1life (1163) | 1 year ago | I also am a big fan of contemporary Christian music. We have an awesome praise and worship team at our church also. We do mostly new praise and worship music. Whenever I visit my brother and go to church with him, they still sing the old hymns and that is nice sometimes to. I would have to say that my favorite old hymns are "Amazing Grace", "I Come to the Garden", and I love to hear Elvis sing "How Great Thou Art". I have a CD that someone gave me several years ago that has the song "Softly and Tenderly" on it and that is also a beautiful song. Be Blessed!

13. Bluepatch (2471) | 1 year ago | When I was 12 years old I walked into this church for midnight Mass one Christmas and the choir sang Handel's Halleleuhiah ( I can't get the word right here ) Chorus and it was magnificent. I've never forgotten it and have yearned for it ever since. Its the best ever if you do hear it.

14. Humbug25 (4101) | 1 year ago | Hi there rocketj1
At present I don't attend church for a few reasons, but that's another discussion. One of my favourites I have enjoyed singing in the past was 'Onward Christian Soldiers'.

15. renitaperrone (438) | 1 year ago | Our church also does primarily contemporary Christian songs. And while I enjoy them, I miss doing some hymns now and again. I LOVE "How Great Thou Art", "It is Well With My Soul" (not sure that's the title tho), "Old Rugged Cross" and of course "Amazing Grace". I love the harmonies that you can do with these songs. I love the emotion that comes from them. Wouldn't want to do all hymns all the time, but I'd love to see more mixed in the list!

rocketj1 (2211) | 1 year ago | I think what could also work is putting hymns into a contemporary style. I hate to think that all the great words of these songs will be lost after this generation. Thanks:)

16. Bebs08 (2527) | 1 year ago | wow!! I like these hymns too. There are a lot of hymns that I like. What a Friend We have in Jesus, Trust and Obey, I would Be Like Jesus, Marching to Zion, I am Thine O Lord and many more. Those are some that We usually sing when we have our church service. I love to sing too and I joined our church choir. It is interesting and uplifting to be a part of the church worship. Have a nice day.

rocketj1 (2211) | 1 year ago | Does your church sing mostly hymns then? My parents church is very conservative and sings only songs from the Psalter Hymnal. Some churches like the more contemporary songs. I guess it is a matter of preference. Thanks!

17. mom4kids (525) | 1 year ago | My favorite hymn has to be Amazing Grace. I also like Nearer My God to thee. I love praise songs by Delirious but my absolute favorite songs to sing is by a woman named Heather Clark. She has many cd's out and she and her husband founded a church in a city about 5 hours from where I live in BC Canada. She has a real heart for people and her songs are just great. Her and a group of them at one time would pick a psalm to all read and pray for inspiration and then they would meet in the city the next day and just start singing and worshiping having nothing planned. God moved in mighty ways! She has 2 cd's strictly just taken out of the psalms. She has other cds that you can tell are so lead by the holy spirit. You can go to heatherclarkband.com to check it out.

mechanicNOT62 (1589) | 1 year ago | ROCK OF AGES - THANK YOU ever so much for mentioning this MEANINGFUL Hymn that as I understand it, truly gives glory to The Lord, like The Old Rugged Cross, which was also mentioned. That is really my problem with contemporary church music, some of which I can't even call Christian. I listen to this music while I drive instead of secular stuff most of the time, just so you know. But has anyone else noticed that a whole number of songs talk about "You" and "He" but seem to be ashamed or afraid of mentioning The Most Holy Name of Jesus? I honestly don't understand how many of the contemporary songs even deserve to be called Christian when all they do is talk about the so-called worshipper and not about Him, who deserves all the praise and glory and recognition for His Holy Sacrifice and work in our favor. What A Friend We Have in Jesus; Rock of Ages; O Sacred Head Now Wounded; Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me; Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed; All Hail The Power of Jesus' Name; Beautiful Savior; Just as I Am. Excuse me, but I don't believe these are equaled in Message and Content and Meaning by anything being composed these days when it comes to building up the faith and strengthening the soul, preparing us to meet The Lord. Of course, I'm humbly willing to submit to correction. Thanks for bringing up the theme.

19. dhisaw (241) | 1 year ago | I dont have any stories to tell that are associated with them. Although the church that I occasionally attend for soem reason only do the old hymns. I think my favorites would have to include Victory in Jesus, As well as Amaing Grace and when we all get to heaven, and old rugged cross. I know that there are many more that i truly like but I cant think of them right at the moment. Also I know that I need to attend church more. i do not know or cant think of a reason why I have not been in awhile.

20. suspenseful (17125) | 1 year ago | My favorite hymn is "A Mighty Fortress is My God," and my favorite contemporary hymm is "Our God is an Amazing God," I have other favorites such as "Amazing Grace", that Harvest Home hymn and "Oh God our Help in Ages Past"- I think they sang it when the Titanic was sinking. I love the old hymns and I also like the Psalms especially that Psalm 23 from the Scottish Psalter. And I do love the Christmas hymns but it is not Christmas yet.
