What are some of your favorite hymns? |
|
Our church is really into the new praise and worship music. I'm a part of the praise team and I am a big fan of contemporary Christian music too. But 2 weeks ago my church had an old-fashioned hymn sing! I think I was a kid the last time I went to one.
We sang "victory in Jesus", "Blessed Assurance", "When we all get to heaven", "It will be worth it all (when we see Jesus)"and so many more. The men in the congregation were especially in rare form and occasionally we would split the verses with the women singing one verse and the men the next.
What a way to worship and what a blessing to all who attended.
What are some of your favorite old hymns? Do you have any stories associated with them that you can share?

I am very good friends with a family who toured for years into different churches and sang and they have so many songs that I like. Then my friend went out on his own and began to do more contemporary stuff, but I think I liked the other stuff better. However, you might have heard of his group- Sunday Drive or of him Buddy Mullins. He is a fabulous songwriter and musician plus a super nice guy.

22. OreoCookie3 (18251) | 1 year ago | What can wash away my sins? Nothing but the Blood of Jesus! That is one of my faves. I also like Victory in Jesus, and When we all get to heaven... and In the Garden is another one.. I am usually asked to sing it acapella..(can't spell that word.. without music). Then I like the praise and worship songs... Our God is an Awesome God, Alleluia, and some others that I can't even think of. I also like the specials.. like Look what the Lord has done!, and Ain't no grave going to hold this body down... and "Mary did you know" that your little boy would one day walk on water? I very much worship with the hymns.

rocketj1 (2201) | 1 year ago | My favorite line in "Mary did you know" is:
Mary, did you know? that when you kissed your little baby, you kissed the face of God, Oh, Mary did you know?
It gives me a lump in my throat and goose bumps up my arms! Thank you! This discussion has truly been a blessing that I didn't forsee when I started it!:)

23. maple_kisses (1053) | 1 year ago | I've been a member of my church's choir since I was six years old. I just love to sing these hymns and I can feel elation everytime I sing. This feeling never waned with time and even with all the trials and problems that came in my life. Those tribulations even made me wanted to sing the hymns more.
I'm sure our church doesn't have the same hymns in other church (I'm no Catholic nor Protestant) so I'm sure you are not familiar with the hymns we sing, such as my personal fave "In My Duty I Have Found My Salvation". However, I guess some of our Wedding Hymns are quite familiar. I've been a Wedding Soloist since I was 18 years old and wedding hymns, especially those that were sing for the exchanging of vows never fail to touch my heart. I definitely love "The Vows", "Walk Hand in Hand with Me" and "With This Heart".
Sigh... I just love singing hymns of praises to the Lord.

24. headhunter525 (1445) | 1 year ago | I like some old hymns. How Great Thou Art, Just As I Am, What A Friend We Have In Jesus etc.
Among choruses that are sung for praise and worship I like These Are The Days Of Elijah, You Are My Hiding Place, My Redeemer, God Is Good All The Time, Shine Jesus Shine, Servant King etc.
But I am afraid if modern songs are losing the message of the cross. The old hymns have profound theology in the lyrics which the modern songs seem to be missing out. Just my observation!

Just make sure that you don't worship hymns but rather that your songs worship HIM.

25. AmbiePam (15252) | 1 year ago | Our church has really moved on into the chorus kind of praise and worship music, but I love when we sing an old hymn or two. You mentioned some of my favorites, but I have so many it would be impossible to name them all! Some of my other favorites are Just a Closer Walk With Thee, Up From the Grave He Arose, How Great Thou Art, and Heavenly Sunlight. Thanks for reminding me of them!

rocketj1 (2201) | 1 year ago | I especially remember "up from the grave he arose" from my sunday school days. We always sang the verses really softly and then we'd come in really loud on UP FROM THE GRAVE HE AROSE! thanks:)

AmbiePam (15252) | 1 year ago | Yeah, on that part all the men who sang bass would get really loud.

26. 6precious102 (1406) | 1 year ago | Like any type of music, some is good and some bad, and that's true with the old hymns. There are some that I really love for the beauty of the message and the melody. I like some of the contemporary Christian music, too; but it doesn't have the appeal for me that my favorite hymns have. It probably goes back to my childhood when that was all we sang. Some of my favorites are "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" (my sister has a CD of the Brigham Young Chorus singing this song and it's really powerful and beautiful), "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty," "The Church's One Foundation," and "Faith of Our Fathers."

27. KrauseHome (13413) | 1 year ago | It is always good to sing some of the Old Hymns from time to time as well as the New stuff out there as well. I think the problem is sometimes, there are some of the Newer people coming into our Church, as well as some of the younger ones that have never heard some of these songs, and really are missing out. There are some that I just love to hear and sing as well. "When We All Get To Heaven", "I'll Fly Away", "We Shall See The King", are just some of my favorites I miss singing from the olden days as well. Every once in awhile I will hear these, but most of the time I think people are just afraid too anymore.

rocketj1 (2201) | 1 year ago | I think that you are right. We know that many people did not grow up in the church and we are afraid that our "old-time" songs would not appeal to them or turn them off. I've said this before, but I think we could put the words and tune to a more contemporary style. We shouldn't just throw them out. Thanks:)
