There has been a boost of discussions in the read category, most of them being today. I am not in the least complaining, in fact I think it's great that more people are reading. I've been asking for recommendations, not only in my own discussions but also in others that I've seen, of course I've asked for more information about the book they were reading and discussing about.
Well has anyone else noticed this spurt of reading? Is anyone else happy about it like I am? I am happy people are reading more, I think it's great. It gets us away from the t.v. set, ya know the Idget box as people like to call it or the boob tube. In any case, is this a new fad because reading is cheaper then watching t.v.?
Do you read more, write more, or watch t.v. more? How do they rank with you?
In any case, as always, happy postings to you!

I have also noticed there have been a lot of discussions in the read category which is a really good thing, and it is a good thing that more people are reading because reading helps broaden peoples minds and help them think outside the box,and I agree reading is a lot cheaper than watching television, and it seems like lately we have been reading more than watching television, even though I do enjoy watching television too.

Personally, I've always been a reader. The last few years, though, I started spending more time online and less time reading. We moved and I just never got a library card here. My sister just did this summer and now we go to the library regularly again and I've begun spending much more time reading.
I think maybe it's the way books have gotten so much media attention lately. The last few years there has been so much hype over series like: Harry Potter, The Lord Of The Ring, and Twilight just to name a few.
My younger sister, she's 21, has never really been a reader. Ever. One day she picked up a copy of one of my books (Dean Koontz' Odd Thomas) and read the little blurb about it on the back and she read it and now she's read all of those books. She also got interested in the Twilight series. Even though those books are long, she enjoys the characters and plots so much that she reads them.
So maybe another reason is that people are just creating the kind of books that appeal to people. There are so many genres of novels that anyone can really find something they like and then they get hooked on reading. My sister never really liked the types of books she'd pick up. They didn't hold her attention, but now that she has found one or two series she likes, she now can find other books that are similar to those to keep her reading.

Oh okay, I appreciate the clarification if it's about vegetarian vampires then it's definitely not like the Harry Potter Series. Then again, I don't know much about that! Oh and for the cards, they may have changed it, his library card (his meaning my fiances) is pretty old. It reminds me of the little card they put in the back of your book like when I was in school, and I think they even did that at the library as well... In any case... I appreciate the re-response! I know that with the economy the way it is, books might just have to wait.. lol.

I didn't know library cards ever expired anywhere. Here once you have one you always have it...I had the same on from first grade through till I moved out of that county when I was 21.
I am waaaaayyyy to broke to buy books. If I had the money I definitely would buy more.
I haven't read the Harry Potter books, but I don't think Twilight are anything like them. I have no interest in Harry Potter, but I thought the Twilight series was really great. They are more of a teen book than an adult one, but I still enjoyed them. They are about Vampires, but 'vegetarian' vampires that don't hunt people. There is a love story in it, which normally I don't like a lot of mushy romancey stuff in books, but it works well in this series.

Well, I don't like the fact that almost every day a new discussion is started asking "What are you reading right now?" How many times does that question need to be asked? Maybe once a month when people change what they are reading from the last time the question was asked. But it is ASKED every day!
I really like the discussions about specific books. Some of them have prompted me to keep a note of the titles and watch out for them. This is good for a lot of people.

I think the limited discussion, "What are you reading?" illustrates that some myLot members do not know how to start a good discussion that will draw people in and elicit quality responses. They would do better to say "Right now I am reading_______ and next I want to read__________. What are you reading now, and do you know what you will read next?" Something like that would make a much better discussion.

The only reason I am reading less books right now is that their is a barage of newspapers that keep begging for my attention. I am reading a book about the Depression and a 'power broker' in New York (Robert Moses) but they come after my newspapers and Im kind of using them to understand the papers more. I would really love to get back to reading for entertainment but no, it would be hard to relax enough for me to. Maybe next year I can get back to that.

I assume that the book on the depression is factual and not really fictional, right? At first it appears to be fictional, but with the way the American Economy is going I'd almost have to say your reading factual stuff. Are the newspapers from the era of the depression? Yea, I can understand not reading for entertainment right now with the way the economy is, reading up the facts is a smart idea, so that you can be prepared and to see if our economy is really in a depression stance.

I think in our case, watching TV is much cheaper than reading because it only costs us electricity which takes part of our 1000-peso electricity bill every month. While reading books costs 100 and MORE pesos a book.
The information that I will get from TV after a month is greater than reading 10 hundred-peso books.
Have a nice day!

Ah yes so for you it is cheaper and easier to just watch t.v. Is there education programming there? Here there is, but I do not think that a lot of people actually watch education programming. I wonder what the conversion is from pesos to US Dollars...

I think its a stretch to call reading a fad. After all, books have been around for centuries, TV has has only been around for about 60 years.
I have been reading more and watching TV less for two reasons.
The first is to get away from the election coverage. The second is that there are not many shows worth watching.
I usually read for about an hour each night before I go to sleep.

Well by fad I really meant "interest" or something of that nature, not really fad. Yes, I don't pay much attention to the TV because of the election. I also agree, not very many shows are worth watching now a days, with it going between crime shows and reality t.v.

Reading was always my way of escaping, but now the internet seems to be. It is pretty thought provoking to link the cost of TV with the cost of reading. Reading is only less expensive if you get your books for free, at the library, for instance. I do not specifically come to this interest, but I just started a discussion that seemed to fit here, and checked out the other discussions. I guess I would wonder if people are reading more fiction, or non-fiction right now, and why? I like books because they fit my schedule. Television, and what we see, is controlled by networks and by station managers. I have the ultimate control of my reading. I read a lot of magazines lately, moreso than books. That is because I receive them as gifts, and also because they are smaller bunches of reading and fit short time periods better.

I would say that it depends on the age group and their varying interests as to whether more are reading non fiction opposed to Fiction. I know, I myself don't care much about politics so as for all the things going on, I don't read on that, nor do I read books about the Great Depression and etc. I suppose reading is a bit more expensive if you are an avid reader as some books are downright expensive, from responses I've seen here it appears that a lot of different countries reading materials are more expensive then our own!
In any case, I appreciate the response!

I just rediscovered reading for fun, too.
I found some books online and am having
a good time.
For me, books are a real escape.
And it exercises the brain,
unlike TV.

I used to be enthralled with a site called fictionpress.com, the author's were amateur but their writings were really good. I even had a few things there myself when I felt inspiration. I think I spent a lot of time on that site more then any other. Books are a great escape and can really open your mind to possibilities. I appreciate the response.

I personally think that reading and writing are more fun, and using the computer to find more titles to read, lol. A person who uses the computer rarely watches t.v., atleast I and my fiance are the same way. We're trying to get into reading more. I appreciate the response.

Lol, I just had a dyslexic moment and read your first sentence backwards. I am glad that you read though, to me sometimes it can be much more interesting then watching the television, and often much less graphically violent. When I do watch t.v. you could hardly say that's educational. lol.

Hi there cowgirl, it's good to hear that people are reading more. I just finished reading a nice book 3 days ago called "I like to go shopping" - i think that's the appropriate translation - by Sophie Kinsella. It was really interesting as i finished it in less than a week. \
I don't read every day, but if you give me a good book be sure that i will read it quite fast and ignore things like the TV set.

Oh well the book sounds very interesting, I wonder what genre it is, it appears to be romance, but is it a mystery or what? Oh yes, and some people are more of the type to read every day wherein some read through a book in a day! I appreciate the response.

That does sound interesting, and the "Can You Keep A Secret?" Are these in translated versions? Do you know? By Letters, is it money? I mean, I know some currency is considered "notes"

It is about romance partially, about shopping... about a woman who is so addicted to shopping that makes debts and she always tosses the letters from the banks and it also has adventure and lots of fun in it... it really is worth it. Another one that i know for sure that the title is correct by Sophie Kinsella as well is " Can you keep a secret ?"

I appreciate the link. It's been a few days since I looked at it, but I don't believe I saw True Betrayals by Nora Robert's. It's one of my favorite books, and since I noticed you had Nora Roberts books on there I thought that I would recommend it to you. It's a really love story about horse races , long lost family and romance! I would definitely pick it up if you got the chance!
Anyway, I appreciate your response to me. I am glad that you are watching less and less programming.

I can understand the boost in reading. Kids are in school, vacations and hectic summer schedules are over. Some family members may be watching sports on tv, and the kids are on the computer doing homework. Perfect time to read!

Well I like Fiction. I'm a fan of romance, and westerns, but I enjoy mysteries as well. I'm also a fan of books that were written decades ago, but have read more recent books. I haven't read in awhile, and can't remember the names of some of the author's i've read, but I do like Nora Roberts, Grace Livingston Hill, and Vilhelm Moberg.

I'd be happy to recommend! What types of books do you enjoy? I enjoy mostly fiction, my choice of genre changes frequently, so I've read a lot of different types of books. I love swapping suggestions and discovering authors I might have overlooked.

I almost don't have any place to pile them up!In my city, library has only very old books and is always so crowded that I seldom be there.

I haven't been to the library where I live but I assume they may only have very old books as well, we live in a very very small county, and I am not complaining at all.. lol.. I like to purchase books myself, and although I haven't a big collection (only about ten books, I had more, but they were soaked when I left them at a friends a few years back) in any case, there are sites you can trade books, I don't know the names but if you check the reading interest I am sure you will find the discussion! Happy Reading to you! Have a blessed day!

Ah okay, well then that's settled, huh? I agree with you, I would not wish to sale or trade mine at all, I feel a bit sad that my old books got wet... Anyway, yes books are expensive. I've read that from other responders on their currency.

Trading the old books? No!Since the books are so expensive today I have to consider one more time before I make the decision of buying. So the books I've bought are all invaluable for me and I will keep them for all my life.

I know how it is to get addicted to watching television or online, I've been through those stages before, and well it's almost impossible to tear yourself away! I used to borrow books a lot, but I don't have a pass for the county I live in now, and I think my fiance's and his parents pass has expired. It's all okay though as I'd much rather buy books, so that I can't put off "going to the library" lol.

I read more than watch tv. I dont like the program shown on tv anymore. Most of them are not educational and a waste of time. I dont like watching life of some trashy people in hollywood showing how demanding and arrogant they are at work and inside there house. There are also program that all you hear everytime you watch it are bad words and fighting. So id rather just spend my time on the net reading news and read some news about whats happening in the world right now than spend time watching tv.

True, reading about the news can be more graphic and dramatic then some of the reality shows we see. Not that it's necessarily a good thing, I think all the violence today is horrible. All the educational t.v. is being drowned about drama and "reality" t.v., so I don't blame you for turning the t.v. off and a lamp on to read! I appreciate the response!
