Uh, Star Wars vs. Trekkies?  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 97/100. AmbiePam (20751)   ranked 52 out of 10,795 in watching movies 4 years ago

I've heard there are usually one or the other - Star Wars fans, or Star Trek fans. Supposedly, one cannot be both. Yeah, I'm being melodramatic. I'm not a huge fan of any of the movies, though if I had to choose it would be Star Wars.

There is a new Star Trek movie (from JJ Abrams, creator of LOST and Alias) coming out, and I'm wondering about all the people who will show up in their Trekkie outfits. I remember when George Lucas started making more Star War movies, fans would line up in all different costumes of characters in those movies.

Where does your allegiance lie? lol Star Wars or Star Trek? Know anyone who goes to those movies in outfits? Are you one of them? There is no shame! whistle

If I had to choose, I'd choose Star Wars, but I am not interested in either one. I do like JJ Abrams work, but it wouldn't make me go to see the film.

Did you see Clerks II? There's a scene in it where one of the main characters gets in to a debate with a customer on whether Star Wars or Lord of the Rings is better.

I am going with Lord of the Rings!!glare

myLot reputation of 97/100. AmbiePam (20751)   ranked 52 out of 10,795 in watching movies  4 years ago

JJ Abrams couldn't make me see it either. I am already disapointed in him for Cloverfield. yawn I haven't even seen Clerks, the first one. Is it worth renting? And if it is, would the sequel be worth seeing? I can always netflix it.

myLot reputation of 87/100. itsmefaith (2222)  4 years ago

The first one was okay, the second was excellent. But, it's very crude, gross humor. Typically I don't love gross humor, but I love Jay and Silent Bob. If you like them, you'd like it.

I am a Trek fan (TOG). If I had a budget, I'd dress in costume. Believe it or not, I am married with kids and see the good in both "worlds".

As as Trek fan, or Trekker, if you look past the surface, the story lines are always for peace, understanding and sometimes an environmental angle to the show. You don't need to watch the shows in order to enjoy the episode.

The main message of Star Trek that I see is hope. Hope that things will be better.

Yes, I plan to see the new movie. Have you seen "Skylar/Gabriel" as Young Spock?!?!?!

myLot reputation of 97/100. AmbiePam (20751)   ranked 52 out of 10,795 in watching movies  4 years ago

I haven't. Is it true they they are having Leonard Nimoy do a cameo in the new film?

sarchix (8)   ranked 9,382 out of 10,795 in watching movies  4 years ago

That's what I've heard too. But no "old" Kirk.

myLot reputation of 97/100. AmbiePam (20751)   ranked 52 out of 10,795 in watching movies  4 years ago

Yes, and William Shatner was ticked off at that exclusion.

myLot reputation of 71/100. Paula1966 (558)   ranked 10,428 out of 10,795 in watching movies  4 years ago

I actually saw a trailer for the new movie a couple of night ago - darned if I can remember what I was watching. I had also seen a pic online of an Entertainment Weekly cover with the actors playing Kirk and Spock. Ole Skylar (can't remember his real name, and I'm WAAAAYYYYY too lazy to pull up imdb.com this morning) pulls off the Spock look pretty well, considering his natural abundance of eyebrow, LOL. When I saw the trailer, even in the short shots, it seems like if you can see him in action, the semblance is even more obvious than in the still picture.

The guy playing young Kirk, though... I don't see it. But I am looking forward to seeing the actor from "Sean of the Dead" playing Scottie! I don't think look-wise he is a dead-on ringer, but I think he will have the right amount of attitude. Hope he doesn't OVER do it, however.

Oh, in case you couldn't guess, I am looking forward to seeing this. :)

I've never been all that into Star Wars though I've seen all the movies once. I'm much more into Star Trek, mostly the original series and TNG.

I'm a Classic Trek fan, I also like the first 3 (that would be #4-6) of the Star Wars.

I have shown up in costume at one of the Trek movies. Now, it wasn't a STAR TREK costume, but it was a costume!

I'm a Science fiction fan, I read the books and go to most of the movies, but I don't like horror so don't mix them up.

Star Wars all the way! I love the old Star Wars movie's back when they first came out in the 70's.

myLot reputation of 97/100. AmbiePam (20751)   ranked 52 out of 10,795 in watching movies  4 years ago

I've seen the three older movies. They used to come on TV all the time when I was a teenager. I've not seen any of the new Star War prequels. I don't really have any interest in them.

Star Wars, but only the first movie. Star Trek, not really. I never like it and I didn't understand how people can watch this boring serial.
I am not going to see Star Trek....

myLot reputation of 87/100. itsmefaith (2222)  4 years ago

Me either!!ninja

myLot reputation of 97/100. polachicago (8508)   ranked 10 out of 10,795 in watching movies  4 years ago

Right, because we are going to see comedy right after skating in Chicago...cool

myLot reputation of 93/100. Transdisc (18434)  4 years ago

I like the first Star Wars the best, too, pola. But I am wondering when was the last time you watched the first Star Wars? I watched it again about a year ago, and I was shocked as to how s l o w a movie it is!! I still love it, though. It's the best!

myLot reputation of 87/100. itsmefaith (2222)  4 years ago

I guess we should not ask Transdisc to go skating and to a comedy with us. He'd rather hang out with Darth Vader and play with laser beams. rolleyes

myLot reputation of 97/100. polachicago (8508)   ranked 10 out of 10,795 in watching movies  4 years ago

The "Force" is going to be with us and the comedy....
Jedi and supernatural is going to be with us....winkwink

When I saw first Star Wars, it was phenomena in cinematography....I was very young and in love with Jedi...it was my kind of man....happy

myLot reputation of 93/100. Transdisc (18434)  4 years ago

I saw Star Wars when I was very young as well, pola. The theater was packed. It was the opening week and my dad took the whole family. I think that he was more excited about seeing it than I.

myLot reputation of 93/100. Transdisc (18434)  4 years ago

Poor, poor, Its. Not laser beams. Light sabers!

myLot reputation of 97/100. polachicago (8508)   ranked 10 out of 10,795 in watching movies  4 years ago

The first move may seems slow now, but at least I could understand the action...
In new Star Wars nobody is able to translate English to English....

myLot reputation of 87/100. itsmefaith (2222)  4 years ago

Yes, I know I lead an empty life without light sabers and whatever the heck else you said. I hope I can find a way to go on living. sad

Hello AmbiePam happy

I am more a Star Wars fan than a Star Trek fan. In fact, I was almost an anti-Trekkie for years until around the late 1980's when I saw a Star Trek movie -- the one about traveling to the past to save the whales, and I thought that was pretty cool, so I started watching more Star Trek shows. I realized that I liked them. So, I'm no longer anti-Trek, but I still prefer Star Wars over Star Trek.

About the only Star Wars thing I've ever done is spend an entire day watching all of the episodes in a row with my children.

I must say (with great pride) that when the last Star Wars movie was released a few years ago, my dad and my youngest brother went to see it when it was released at midnight AND they were both dressed in Star Wars garb.

Did you get a picture? I bet they had a heck of a lot of fun!

myLot reputation of 93/100. Transdisc (18434)  4 years ago

There is a photo or two somewhere around, Ambie. Heehee. I wasn't there and only heard about it with awe. But I bet if I dig around I could find those photos.

myLot reputation of 97/100. AmbiePam (20751)   ranked 52 out of 10,795 in watching movies  4 years ago

Hmmm...could they possibly work as blackmail?

myLot reputation of 93/100. Transdisc (18434)  4 years ago

Yes, blackmail. Of course!

If you really want to see a reason for blackmail you should see the photo of my dad where he looks like a leprochaun. It's hilarious! (He wasn't supposed to look like a leprochaun.)

Well I've actually been a fan of both, having grown up watching all the original 78 episodes of the Star Trek series. Though not fanatical. I have one friend who really IS a die-hard Trekkie, can recite the entire script/dialogue of all 78 original shows and used to go to the Trekkie conventions. As for me though, while I do love both, I think I'm more a Star Wars fan....I just love the whole idea of "The Force" thing...may the force be with yourasp

Uh...I do however do a great Live and Prosper Spock greeting..heehee

myLot reputation of 97/100. AmbiePam (20751)   ranked 52 out of 10,795 in watching movies  4 years ago

I can't do the greeting! And it vexes me (I put the vex in for Transdisc). My mom and sister can do it, but I sit alone, unable to properly tell people to live long and prosper. cry

myLot reputation of 97/100. AmbiePam (20751)   ranked 52 out of 10,795 in watching movies  4 years ago

How many Star Trek TV shows have there been? I know of two, but there have been more I think. One had Whoopi Goldberg.

myLot reputation of 92/100. nanajanet (2933)   ranked 252 out of 10,795 in watching movies  4 years ago

According to Wikepedia

1 The Original Series (1966–1969)
2 The Animated Series (1973–1974)
3 Phase II
4 The Next Generation (1987–1994)
5 Deep Space Nine (1993–1999)
6 Voyager (1995–2001)
7 Enterprise (2001–2005)

myLot reputation of 97/100. AmbiePam (20751)   ranked 52 out of 10,795 in watching movies  4 years ago

Wow!

myLot reputation of 92/100. nanajanet (2933)   ranked 252 out of 10,795 in watching movies  4 years ago

Yeah, I did not know that there were as many. I did not continue watching after the second tv series as it sort of felt different but I did like the movies. When I look back now, at the original show that I grew up with, it is corny, but it was still fun. Boy, the special effects were funny!
