Make or buy a birthday cake?

For their family celebration at home, I made a birthday cake for my twins. This saturday is their party with all their friends, and I was thinking of buying a birthday cake, but I would save money if I made one. When your kids have a party with friends, do you make or buy a birthday cake?

I always make birthday cakes, I'm not that good at making birthday cakes. I would rather they remeber the attempts of me making them a cake and the icing that I'm not that good at than a shop cake. At least my cakes are full of love

yep ! I think over time I have gotten better at baking . The no baking ones are a piece of cake hehe . When you make your own you get to mix and match that is the good thing and add more icing haha (love that (

Neither of my kids has ever had a birthday party, but when it comes to their birthday's I normally make the cake. Neither one of them really likes cake that much and I don't either, so it would be a waste of money to buy one.

I make the cakes. I only once bought a cake and it was $20 and tiny. I usually do some cool decorations on it so I usually get a "KEWL" response when the kids see it. I have printed out their favorite characters and taped them to Popsicle sticks and put them on the cake. Last year I turned my daughter's cake into a drum as she is a drummer. My last sons birthday I turned it into a spiderweb where I stuck spiderman characters on the web with the sticks. If kids like ice cream cake, this was an easy cheaper way than the dairy queen froze cake. Take the no name ice cream sandwiches and make a row of four, them put chocolate fudge and chocolate cookie crumbs on top, layer another four ice cream sandwiches, then put cool whip around the whole thing and wrap in tin foil and put in freeze. Take out and stick on any paper popsicle stick things on it. Even make the age and name if you like. Let unthaw for 10 minutes before serving. Costs have the price of store bought. The kids LOVED it.

The ice cream cake idea is great. I'll have to try it sometime. My daughter has a birthday in June so Ice cream cake would be perfect.

I've purchased them a few times for my kids, but mostly I've made them. I usually do a round 2-layer one. The kids enjoy being the one to choose the flavor and frosting. They often help making it too.

My girls are both 'grown & flown' and I still make their cakes. I make my grandchildrens cakes too. I was very lucky to have grown up near my one aunt who was a cake decorator and did all the family cakes (tiered wedding cakes and all!) I learned lots about cake decorating, and I love to do it. The last birthday (for my one grandson) I made a cake that was a train. He's really into trains this year, so he thought that a great treat. When my girls were little and had friends over for their birthday parties, they'd usually want a doll cake. (For a doll cake you make a bundt cake and put a Barbie in the middle and then make a bouffant gown with the frosting.) I think that was their fav cake lol. Lots of their friends wanted the same cake for their birthday too. Saves a lot of money doing your own cakes!

I am not nearly that talented. I would just make a regular 9x11 cake with frosting. I have a hard time using icing to spell something out!

You can still make a homemade nice one just by making their favorite flavor, and then adding purchased decorations on top. There's all kinds of little goodies you could get at the dollar store to stick on top. Anything from party favors to little mini toys. When my grandson was 3 I made him a simple cake, no homemade frosting decorations. He was into farms then, toy tractors, excavators, etc. So I made chocolate frosting and put grooves in the frosting (so it looked like rows in a field.) Then I placed the tractors and stuff around. Lol, he loved that cake and it wasn't by any means fancy. And while we were gathering together the plates and forks...he drove all over the cake with his toy tractors and stuff. Talk about some good pictures hahaha. Twins...boy, I'll bet that keeps you busy!!! Hope you have a nice Thanksgiving :-)

I think the fast pace of life here in Singapore has led to many parents buying ready made cakes from bakeries when it comes to birthday celebrations. Seldom do any parents take the time and effort to bake their own cakes, although I must say that baking cakes oneself is indeed very rewarding! It does take some effort though, but one should not be too discouraged if the cake does not come out perfect on the first try!

I usually would buy a cake. That was their special thing, we would go to the store and they could flip through the book and pick out a cake. But now with money being as tight as it is I'll probably starting making their cake. Maybe I can get crafty enough with it to make them one they like.

I'm not crafty at all. I know purchased cakes are nicer looking, but are a bunch of 6 year olds going to care? I need to buy or make the cake this weekend for their party, and I'd sure love to save the money and use it towards Christmas shopping. Maybe I'll just do cupcakes, kids like those just as much as cake.

I really like cream cheese icing tho and usualy that has to be made. I once tried to make my dad a bday cake and well it was burnt and gooey and warm in the inside I am better at pre bake ones well the no bake LOL.

Celebrations nowadays are SO commercialized that I promised myself that no matter what, I would always bake my son's Birthday Cake. We have a very large extended family and holidays, birthdays, anniverseries, graduations ETC are always an excuse for us all to gather... Yeah, it's easier to buy prepared stuff, especially for alot of people, but I look at my little guy's special day differently... He was a miracle baby (four years to have him!) and it's the one thing (his cake) that I can put my effort into and the entire time to prepare it, I have private thoughts, memories, hopes and dreams for my baby!
