What most Doctors don't tell you about Hydrogen Peroxide because   

I wouldn't be surprised if Peroxide was the main ingredient in the best of them. These old home remedies are hard to beat.

It's the third ingredient (after water and 8% Alcohol) in Listerine Whitening pre-brush rinse.

I'm using the pre-brush rinse until it's gone, then switching to the brown bottled H2O2. For that much of a difference in price, I can handle the taste!

I have been using peroxide on my teeth. It may taste a little funny, but I would rather spend the $1 on it than go pay $30 for one of those other kits!

Mix the peroxide with a 50/50 or 60/40 solution of your favorite, or just a cheap mouthwash. Makes the taste of peroxide a little easier to handle and you still get the benefits of the whitening. Another thing you can do is mix baking soda, peroxide and mouthwash into a paste and you have an EXCELLENT toothpaste. Fresh breath, whitening and a gentle cleanser all in one. No need to pay big bucks for a tube of toothpaste that advertises "whitening and oxygenating bubbles to kill germs." You can make your own that is better than store bought, cheaper and all natural, no SLS or other chemicals in it that you don't need or want.

Thanks for posting the snopes connection here. I was thinking of having my granddaughter put peroxide on her canker sore. she can't seem to get it to heal.

They have to play it safe, as they work around legal issues, keep from arousing the wrath of the medical profession, and try to uphold trusted, time honored, medical applications, by thousands of non- professional homemakers, and caregivers.

deebomb, put salt and lemon on the sore. It is going to hurt like crazy for a second but it will fade and get better.

I would advise against salt and lemon for canker sores. Not only are both extremely painful but they don't seem to have any good effect (citrus is one of the things that Wikipedia lists as to be avoided).

Although it appears that no one really knows what causes them, it seems that there is evidence that canker sores run in families and that they are more prevalent in women than in men. They are not contagious (as cold sores are).

Several sites say there may be a link with products containing sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), such as toothpaste, for example. Try changing her toothpaste to one that doesn't contain this.

As with any ulcer, the important thing is to keep it clean and free draining and to avoid irritants (very difficult with a mouth ulcer!). One treatment does recommend using a 1.5% solution of Hydrogen Peroxide (standard 3% diluted 1:1) as a mouthwash. This would tend to clean the wound.

Becky says you just buy it over the counter. My guess is that walmarts would be sure to stock it.

I've never used it myself, but I'm thinking of a few applications that might be applicable in my house.
