naming your cat |
| |
| I have always enjoyed the company of cats. We had plenty of them when I lived on a farm as a child and I always had at least one around even after we left the farm. We had cats of every kind and always came up with names that seemed to fit their personality. As I grew up I became particularly fond of science fiction and Star Trek especially. When I started naming the cats for my own household I would use characters from Star Trek for their names. My last cat was named Spot and there is a funny story behind that. One of the characters on Star Trek the next generation is an android called Data. Now Data has always aspired to be human so he is constantly experimenting with things that he hopes will make him more like humans. He has observed that his human shipmates seem to require pets to make them happy. So he has decided that he will get a pet as well. After researching it he decides that a cat would be the best pet for him so he gets a yellow stripped one which he names Spot. When he was asked why he chose that name for this cat, who had no spots, he said he had accessed his database for appropriate names for a pet and found that spot was used most often. I don't think anybody ever did tell him that Spot was traditionally a dog's name. So I named this cat, as well, after a character on my favorite sci-fi and I get to tell the story every time someone asks why I picked that name when my cat has no spots. | | | | | |

| | So, are you planning on getting a cat soon? Do these names have some special significance for you or do you just like the way they sound? | | | |

| | We've only had one cat that I can remember ever really naming. It was a beautiful white cat named Blanco, which means white. My daughter, on the other hand, has had many cats that they name. They have two right now. One is a very old cat they named Sonny when her kids were small. The other one resembles this cat and his name is Sylvester. Doesn't matter how many cats happen to be around her house, the kids figure out the right name for each of them and they can remember each of them if they were all together. Guess I'm getting too old for that! | | | | | | |

| | I have noticed that same thing when it comes to kids. One of my cats had five kittens and four of them looked so much alike that it was almost impossible to tell them apart. Never the less we named each one of them and the kids were the only ones that could keep them straight. Of course after they got older and developed their own personalities I was able to tell them apart. | | | |

| | I never like cats but I have few heads at home because my daughters love cats and I have to go along with their passion. I love dogs and I have two lovely dogs I named LALA and SPARKY. I once had a Great Dane I named spotty, as his body is full of spots. I am fond of naming my dogs with short and easy sounding names. They respond well to shorter names. | | | | | | |

| | I think most animals respond better to short simple names. While we may think our pet is as smart as we are they really have limited intelligence so its easier for them to identify with short names. There were several days that I didn't see any discussions with your name on them. Did you take some time off or were you just busy with other things. My truck has been broke down so I've had more time on my hands lately. I've been spending most of it online. | | | |

| | Yes, I have been away for a week and was only back two days ago. There are so many posts from friends that I have yet to respond. When I came back my computer was mad with me and kept shutting down so it delayed the process of responding. luckily I was able to read the problems of my computer and managed to restore it quickly. | | | |

| | I'm always fascinated by what names people come up with for their animals. My current cat is Humphrey (Short for Humphrey bogart II. His father was Humphrey bogart I and we always just called him Bogey which I think was a better name but I always retire the names. My all time favorite cat name that I thought up was "Beans". I had this little black and white devil that I couldn't come up with a name for and while I was watching him run around one morning I said "You're really full of beans today! The name stuck and everybody loved it. It really suited that cat. | | | | | | |

| | I try to blend my practice of naming my cats after star trek characters with waiting until they have developed a personality. If you watch them for awhile they will usually make it apparent what they are to be called. | | | |

| | Yes we also have the movie for the first book here. But of course the books are better than a movie eh? I bought my sister the series in hardcover for christmas a couple years ago. Hope she will come out with another book this century. LOL | | | |

| | LOL - I used to have a cat named Spot.. I have many cats now... but you might find the name for one of my dogs of interest.. her name is K'Ehleyr... my dog is a Klingon.. lol | | | | | | |

| | I think you are right there. I too think that the klingon names are more suited for dogs than cats.. I did have a kitten I named T'Pring.. she had a split foot so she looked like she was giving the vulcan "live long and prosper" sign. Vulcan names are probably good for either... :) | | | |

| | I know what you mean. When I had Spot spayed she got very big. It made me feel like she was healthier because before when she was having kittens every season she stayed so skinny even though she was well fed. | | | |

| | I think it is a nice idea to have a story for a cat's name. As you describe, it does provide something to talk about. :) | | | | | | |

| | Than you. I always thought the story was a nice touch. After all when we have children we always look for names with meaning. All the books that are written for parents to pick childrens' names from give meanings for each name. | | | |
