Nicholas Cage. How did he get so popular when he only has one facial expression?

This has me baffled! This man looks EXACTLY the same when he's happy, sad, angry, confused, contented, irritated, baffled, sexually aroused, etc. Doesn't matter what the situation, this guy has the exact same expression on his face!

I saw him smile in some movie once and it was so sad! I mean to see this normally pathetic-looking face trying to smile, it just looked so forced!

So, how did he get to be so popular with only one expression that looks natural on his face? I mean, he's a good actor and all, but geesh! He can't fake any other expression than sadly confused and depressed?

LOL---I hear ya gal. Not only does he have one facial expression but his acting is rather wooden...I do love him in The City Of Angels, and the National Treasure movies..but as a great actor..nah. lol At the risk of having wet noodles flung at me...another actor I could never "get" as being a great one...do I dare say his name? How about if I just give the intials...C.H. recently died and was in a lot of epic movies and was "gun" ho...literally...

lol Yeah, him, too!!! What is it? I don't get it. I only really liked C.H. in one movie... Solent Green. My husband calls him a "wuss" because, in the first "Planet of the Apes" movies, when C.H. is jumping out of the spaceship into the water, the camera catches him, for just a brief moment, holding his nose before going into the water! doh

But, in the mono-expression department, I honestly think Nicholas Cage has first place. I don't think anything other than this man needs therapy! LOL

I wish he'd get plastic surgery or something to at least 'create' a realistic-looking smile or even just a pleasant-looking face!

I thought acting was all about creating different facial expressions. Well, not ALL about it, but it has a large role in it. He definitely couldn't pull off, oh, let's say, a 'winning a billion dollars' expression! He'd make an excellent poker player, though!

I enjoy Nicholas Cage, and yes you are right, but then he has a way to tell a story and relay it to you. Its the VOICE, the timing, and the scripts he chooses.

Always good to watch in any movie.

Well, I wasn't impressed with him in movies where he 'gets the girl' at the end. He has the same expression on his face when he's about to kiss a woman (and right AFTER he's kissed a woman) as when he's facing a bad guy with a gun pointed at him! He'd be awesome in a movie where he played a poker player, though!

I really like Nicholas Cage but now that you mentioned it you are right about just one facial expression. I like that he can play in a comedy (It Can Happen to You) and suspensful type movies(Face Off). Not everybody can do that. BTW its good to see you posting, I haven't seen you much unless I just am not getting all my notifys.????? cry sad

Oh, heck yeah, I've been posting. I guess it's my turn to be a victim of the myLot curse (glitch). I agree that Nicholas Cage is very versatile in his role-playing and can pull off just about any character very well, but, geesh! It's almost like his face is paralyzed or something! One thing I know, I'll never play poker with that guy! His 'poker face' has got to be the BEST!

That look is part of his personality!!! I think I'm the only person in the world who hated Raising Arizona!!! I kept hearing what a GREAT movie it was. Well, I waited a few years & went back to watch it again thinking I had just missed something. OMG, it was WORSE than I had remembered!!! I always asked...WHY is Nick Cage so popular??? I must say as the years have gone by, I am one of his biggest fans. He is NOT good looking, he has MINIMAL personality, yet he is GREAT in what he does!!! Examples....City of Angels & ConAir...just to name a couple.

He is well connected in Hollywood via his family. Apparently someone (probably his uncle) taught him how to choose scripts that fit his personality. I can't imagine anyone else doing the National Treasure series!!! But then again, I couldn't imagine anyone else being James Bond beside Sean Connery only to find that several did a good job!!! happy happy happy

Oh, I agree that he's a great choice for the characters he plays. It's just so hard to imagine him pulling any character off except maybe someone with clincial depression!

I wouldn't want to be his wife, that's for sure! I'd never be able to tell when he's lying about saying he loved the meatloaf or when he was trying to get, you know, romantic. blink

If I were a poker player, I'd definitely want him on my team! He has the best poker face in the world! w00t

Oh, definitely! He's an awesome speaker and knows exactly when and how to say his lines, when to add a pause, etc.

Hahahaha! Well, at least one person thinks he's hot! lol (I'm sure there are many more!) For me, Robert Redford always turned me on until he got really old. Then, it was Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp! drool

If Nicholas Cage were next to me, I'd have a hard time reading his thoughts because of that poker-face he has. I watch people I'm with; read their body language. I'd have a really hard time knowing whether he was happy or sad or angry or excited!

confused And now that you mention it I can't think of any of his movies besides Conair even though I've seen several, but you're right, I don't ever remember him smiling at all. Still, I like him as an actor, so maybe that's what makes him special! Funny, huh.

I don't know maybe it has to do with being a Coppola and having a famous uncle. Kind of like all the attention Drew Barrymore got for ET because of her famous name when all she did in that movie was scream.
I know what you mean about his facial expressions. Some movies its worked to his benefit.
