I came in with a basket...

And left with a pushcart. I went to the grocery store today to buy some things for New Year's Eve. We are not having a grand celebration but I thought it would be nice to just have a lovely meal before midnight strikes and then the new year starts. So I went inside, grabbed a basket as I have my trusty list with me. No temptations, no additional buys, no spontaneous ideas of what else could be good for that night... or what else we may need in the house. That is what a list is supposed to do. (Un)fortunately, the list does not hit me every time I grab something that is not on it. So I filled my basket quickly, had to leave it on the floor as I go grab a pushcart outside as I haven't even gotten to half of what was on my list. I was neither hungry nor depressed. Yet there I was, coming in with a basket and leaving with a pushcart. Sounds familiar to you?

It sounds very familiar to me! I always go to the grocery store with the list of things were are out of or nearly out of. But I always manage to see things I had forgotten to put on the list! I rarely just buy randomly. What looks like it's going to be a small bill sometimes turns out to be a large one! I spent $184 on groceries before Christmas and didn't even have to buy the ham! I thought we wouldn't be back in the grocery store for a couple weeks. Well, forgot my grandsons were staying awhile after Christmas. I've already been back and spent almost $40 and we are about out of milk already! The list is building again. Seems we work to eat around here. Guess I had better get busy on mylot!

I got one of those huge tin foil cartons once and it lasted me almost 2 years I think! Of course I don't use yards of it covering bbq pits and stuff like that, hehehe.

Speaking of checking the receipt, my husband checked the one other night. He called me in there and said "did that Reynolds Wrap cost over $8?" I said, "What"? I looked at it - the 200 regular reynolds wrap, and the ticket did say that. I was shocked. I was blocked from getting another one by a couple people, and I never thought to look at the price on the shelf. I told my husband, though, I am sure 8-25 yds ones would cost way over $8! I guess it will last a long time!

I had to check my receipt after they were done checking me out as I could NOT believe I spent that much. I am telling myself that all these go to a good cause. The family that eats together stays together, Barb. Have a memorable 2009 in a good way!

Yep, I have even tried to trick myself before Ms Saintly. I would tally up the items on my list, add a few bucks to that and put exactly that amount in my purse along with the list, and take off... then I would have to ask the cashier if I could leave my cart there while I ran home and got the rest of my money.

The likelihood of having to put stuff back increased proportionately to the number of miles away from my house. I HATE having to put stuff back! Everybody behind you in line is like tapping their feet and sh!t! This way I could just park my full cart by the cashier when I knew I had gone over and rush home. But the fact is, I stopped doing that, and just went back to taking all my money with me when I went.

I have these moments when I just put things that I don't like at the different aisle where I decide they're not worth my money that moment. Boyfriend likes to bring them back to where I got them. Happy New Year, Ziggy. It's 2009!

Maybe you should have gone to a much farther (or further?) grocery store that you can't quickly run to, Ziggy? I remember when I was younger and I used to buy groceries while my dad waits in the car. I always am short on the cash and would tell the cashier that I was going to come back with enough money. So I would run to my dad's car, get more money and pay it.

Sounds like me. I get so into the spirit of things that I see stuff and think, "oh that'll go over good" etc. It's all about making it a fun and festive time. It is so very easy to do. It has nothing to do with my own hunger or desires....tis the season to think of others and that is what gets me into trouble in the grocery store.

"Tis the season to think of others." Very true. I think what my sister may enjoy or what we need in the house as well as what Boyfriend may enjoy and need at his place as well. Thanks, Sid. Happy new Year!

Yup. The thought that you have extra money will do that to you. When I was on a strict budget as I did not have any income coming in for a while, I barely went to the grocery store and bought stuff. Now, I just feel good knowing that I can buy stuff again. Thanks, angel of charm. Happy New Year to you and yours!

Hi anne! As always, my dear friend once again we are so much alike! I can never go into a grocery store, even with a list and come out with just what is on the list! It is for some unknown reason totally impossible! I wish I knew why! I just can not stick to anything when entering a grocery store! The food just calls to you from the shelves! I swear it talks to me! No matter how hard I try to stick to that list it just doesn't work! So I just give up and give in! I guess you do too!

Here are some of the reasons (for me) that I could think of why I do this: (1) I'm already at the store, might as well get the item instead of going back on another trip. (2) It's a bargain. (3) We may need this in the future. (4) I should try it. It looks delicious. (5) I should try it. It looks easy. (6) I should try it. it's not that expensive. (7) It is going to be my treat for today. etcetera etcetera...

If you have relatives in the Philippines then we might be, Opal. I guess for now let's just say that we're related through Adam and Eve like people believe. But yes, we have so many things in common. It's not so surprising anymore to find out you went through something or felt the same way as I did during a certain time. May you and your Boyfriend have a great time this NYE and a wonderful year ahead, Opal.

I do that ALL the time!! I go in with a list and I make sure that I have eaten so that not everything looks good to me. I still always leave with double the items on my list. Something always looks good, or there is something there that I am sure I will need......Its hard to go and only buy what you have on your list.

When I did have a tight budget, I was pretty good with leaving the store with ONLY the things I need. Now, I tell myself that we need it and if not, it is a treat. Thanks, shihtzumama and you have a great year ahead!

Sounds very familiar to me, because i get tempted too, but then pause for a moment and decide against it. Maybe next time leave all your cards at home, take just a limited amount of money and try it.

I use my debit card so I know I won't get so overboard. I do that every now and then, just make sure everything can be covered by the cash I have with me but most times, I just let myself go. Thanks, alokn. Hope you have a great and wondrous 2009!

oh yes Annie, sounds very familiar to me. On top of that, the shop which I visit every month end, does free home delivery so (un)fortunately, I don’t have to pay them then and there. So you can very well imagine the size of the pushcart I need. Well I had an idea (I thought it was brilliant) and tagged my son along with the list in his hand. He was supposed to read out and push me away from temptation! Heaven help me…I forgot that HE was MY SON! Temptation my foot…the last bar of imported chocolate just had to be a priority just like the huge tub of icecream (oh but they are giving 20% extra with that mommy…), a new cream maybe or an extra pack of meatballs! Oh boy!!! How I hate (love) monthly shopping PS: Hungry/depressed...do we really need an excuse for splurging!

Hell sudipta... I am sure you enjoyed the whole grocery outing with your son even though it got a bit more than you bargained for. Having someone with me during a grocery trip works both ways though. Sometimes I get pulled away or I do the same to them but then we also encouraged each other to try something that we haven't tried before. Happy New Year to you, sudiptacallingu!!!

When youu get home and taking it out of your cart, do you ask your self now couldn't I have lived with out that right now. I hate going to the grocery store, no matter if I take a list, I have at least 10 more items, if I'm lucky that is all, than what I went in there for. I watched my daughter yesterday at the grocery store, she put it in, took it out. When we got to the register, it was like %40. and she swore she never spent more than $20. If we could just once go in and come out with what is on our list and nothing else, I don't think I can do it, I think it is a set up, they know you can't get out of the store with out at least one more sack of stuff. Is it a disease or just stupidy on our part, I think we buy what we need and what we feel like we need at the time, won't have to go out again, oops I already had a couple of those after I got home. My problem is I'm always looking for something different, so I end up with a lot of junk I could of done without. I make a list and most of the time leave it at home. Hubby the same way send him for milk and he comes back with 10 additional items. It is just in our genes.

So it's genetic! It's not my fault then, bdugas, for buying stuff that I may not use or need in the next few months but just have to have now. Whenever I open our cupboards and see these items there unused, that is when I think I should not have bought them at all. I do have these kinds of questions when I go grocery shopping but most times, the answer in my head is "go ahead, buy it."

9 times out of 10 when I go to the grocery store I go hungry. I'll walk through the store and say that looks good. Wow that looks good. before I know it i'm leaving the store with an overflowing cart. I've tried eating before I go to the store but even when I eat I still come out with things I didn't intend to get when I went in!

I don't like going to the store hungry. I definitely know I'll be buying a lot of food I am sure I will not eat for a while. But right now, I want some doughnuts. I don't really know what it is with getting more stuff that we first intended. Thanks, marcialoyd and may you have a wonderful new year ahead.

I did that last night! I went in for a couple of things and had to get a cart. I was invited over to a friend's house and went to buy ingredients to make a dessert. Well, I decided to get some appetizers too, then I needed a couple of things for the house, and by them time I realized it, my cart was full too. Have a happy New Year!

Sounds very familar, I will even pass by both the cart and the basket, because I only come in here for one item and end up with a hand full, and they are falling all over the place, don't let me see a cart sitting somewhere and no one is using it. I wish I could go in the store and get just what I went in for and come out. Impossible thing are happening every day.

LOL. I am that other person in the aisle that has things falling all over the place. How come my paper towels would not fit in my small basket? How about some firelogs? Here's to the impossible being possible for you, Chevee, in 2009 and the years to come!

many people are like u only. goes to buy of small list .but after entering that shop , u wander here and there and picks more things . sometimes this over buying is worried by us only and everytimes thinks of buying less things , and comes outside with pushcarts with more things .this is not the problem of u only, me also like that only and me and my husband will argue about this only. he sees less things and wants to buy less things which i don;t like. i hope to change my attitude towards less shopping, but i can't control and sometimes my husband controls me . i have the attitude of we should enjoy all our life now, as we don;t know when we can leave this earth. so thinks to enjoy more now itself and do shopping more things. so u also control u;r wishes and save money for future. but i should control my wishes and should do the shopping less times .and i wish to save money now , which can be useful for tomarrow.

Sure does! That's why I leave the kids & hubby at home otherwise I'm always buying extras I had not intended or budgeted for. I'll be feeling that pain soon myself as we will have 4 house guests for a few days and I don't know what they like but I can't not have anything in the house they may like.... seeing they like junk it's not hard but still an expense I'm not looking fwd to. I'm also a sucker for a deal I see a deal I'll stock up and grab it even if I don't need it at the minute usually it works out well til I run out of that item again ;)

I hope you have a fun time with your house guests, snugglebunnies. I worry when that time comes for me when I get married and have kids. I have trouble enough alone. I'm getting better at putting back "deals". But sometimes, you just have to get there and "save". Have a happy and productive 2009, snugglebunnies and thanks!

This always happens to me at the grocery store. I run in to grab something and come out with half the shop. I really do not no why I do it as I do not really need half of the things I buy, but sometimes they are on offers and I cannot refuse a bargin.
