I have bought bags and shirts in a garage sale many years ago and they were very cheap. I loved the things they sold on sale.
My husband came up with the idea of having a garage sale to do away with our unnecessary things at home. I don't want to sell it in our garage for I know only few will come and I feel ashamed to my neighbors. They might think that we are that broke. Do you think having a garage sale is okey?

Wow that's nice. Isn't it good to see new things at home and get rid of the old stuff and at the same time earn and have some fun?
How I wish garage sale would be popular in our area.
Thanks.

Sometimes I go to garage sales to collect items to send to Uganda to my friends school for disabled kids. I also like to look at nick knacks that they usually have at garage sales. I've also held various garage sales as fund raisers.

I admire for you for being so good at charity works.
maybe I could do some garage sale not to earn for myself anymore but to help those who are in need.
Thanks for your nice comment. It opened my mind and heart to do some charity works.

Garage sales are a great way to clean clutter and things you no longer want. I don't know why you are ashamed. I go to garage sales all the time. You may even want to ask your neighbors if they would want to have one at the same time. That way you can attract more people.

Yeah, garage sales are one of the better ways to clean up our house but it's not an "in" thing in our place. I mean, rarely if not never do people hold garage sale.

Sure I think it's ok if you have a garage sale. They are very common in our area and we are in a good neighborhood. My opinion is the people who have them just don't want to keep their junk any longer. Taking up space. I don't view all garage sales as being a profitable moneymaker. They can be fun if done with a friend. I did one once with a friend and we had a blast. It was at her house and it wasn't in the garage. It was on her driveway where we had more space. I made almost nothing but enjoyed the day outside with a friend.

Yeah, it's common in your place. I saw in the television news about people having garage sales in your country. I don't know why it's not popular in our place.
Thanks for your nice comment.

well,of course. what do u care what the neighbors think. if they are that tacky u don't have very good neighbors. it's a great way to get rid of things u don't use or need. i bet if u ask some of those neighbors they'd go in w/u. i use to go to them all the time when i had my antique store. u would be surprised at what people will buy. if it's warm weather you'll do better.

Thanks for the idea and thanks for your nice comment.
By the way, what happened to your antique store? I also love to buy antique things but it's pretty expensive.

That was a wise decision. Health should come first before anything else. I hope you have a better health now. God bless.

In the summer my kids an I go to garage sales all the time. We are always finding neat things.
We have had a few garage sales in the past. It is a great way to get rid of things that you may normally just give away and to make a little extra money.

I mostly only buy "stuffs" at garage sales, flea markets, church sales, and online.
'Cause it's way cheaper than going to Walmart, and occasionally, even cheaper than the dollar store.
The only thing I have a hard time not buying at regular stores...are books, that's my big weakness.
But seriously what's more tempting a single pair of cute jeans for twenty buks or a twenty pairs of cute jeans for a buck? (Basically my philosphy about shopping in general, xD I don't care that they're second-hand)
We haven't had a garage sale of our own yet, but we do sell things are flea markets every other year or so. And what do you mean OK? It's awesome, of course!

Oh yeah, there are many nice stuffs in yardsales. I have bought also many good stuffs in flea markets. I ahven't tried buying things online for fear that I might get the wrong item.

We are having one right now. Well, not RIGHT now as we shut down for the night. We are clearing out lots of stuff from our garage and out buildings. We are pack-rats and have lots of extra stuff to sell. Sometimes we buy things at other sales and fix them up and resell. We will have another sale in about a month, I plan on putting out lots of extra in house stuff. As far as the neighbors--------ours couldn't care less. And if I were you I wouldn't worry about what yours say. They might wander over and buy something. There is nothing to be embarrassed about.

Garage sale is really a great way to help clean up the extra things at home. How many days do you usually hold the garage sale?

I've had a garage sale every may long weekend for the past three years. Its alot of work however i always enjoy the extra cash i get from it. I'm not ashamed and if neighbours want to add to mine and tell me what they want for things i'll be willing to let them!

Having a garage sale may be good. With your friends, you can have more to sell and more to expect people to come and income to earn.
Good luck.

It sounds like, in your part of the world, there is still a social stigma associated with holding or shopping at garage sales. I'm very sorry to hear that. In my opinion, garage sales are the best way of buying and selling things.
I have done garage sales for many, many years now both as a buyer and a seller. I have been able to find clothes, books, household items, toys for my kids and many other great items for very reasonable prices. If I had to buy the same items new in the store, I would go broke every month because they would cost too much. And selling things you don't need anymore is a great way to make a few extra dollars while getting rid of clutter at the same time.
I know I am not alone in this. I have met many, many garage sale enthusiasts over the years. Most of these people will start out at 7 am on Saturday with the classified listings and a map, planning which sales to go to first. It's like a game--the great treasure hunt! I have been to sales in many upscale, affluent neighbourhoods where the residents clearly don't need the money, but do it as an opportunity to get rid of things. If a few neighbours do it together it can also be a great community activity and a chance to meet new people.
As for what other people think...well, don't forget that right now the economy is affecting everyone. So what if your neighbours think your poor? Right now everybody is.

I am not from the US. . .When rich people do garage sale, people think that they just want to get rid of the unnecessary things but when average and rich people do the garage sale, people think that they are selling their stuff for the reason that they are in desperate need of money. there is really a social stigma about having garage sale in our place. I hope I could change this by doing my own garage sale. thanks for your nice response.

I have also done both. I've not really made alot at yard sales recently but it is a good way to get rid of extras , and also might be a way to meet some of the neighbors you dont know. I have been to garage sales in all types of neighborhoods. I dont think it is anything to be ashamed of. I think they will think more that you are clearing out or remodeling.
If not, you could check and see if there is something like Freecycle there. It is a great way to pass on things you no longer need and someone else comes and picks up the items and usually is very appreciative to get the things you listed. Freecycle is a yahoo group in areas of the US. I dont know from your posting if you are in the states or not. Here is it done by state and county so you dont have so far to go to get or the person picking up to get to you.
I have seen things like furniture, clothing , toys, lawnmowers ,and electronics. THings you no longer want may be just the things someone else would struggle to buy.
Good luck in whatever you decide

I love going to yard sales. I haven't went to any in a while bt this summer I'll get a newspaper and see where they are having them. I usually take a whole day to hit as many as possible. I don't get to do it often but when I do..I make it an allday thing.
