Do you like it when people ask your age? |
|
How old are you? 28. Father with 2 sons: Oh gosh, you are in the prime of your life. So young, just like a baby.
I hate it when people comment on my age this way. 28 is certainly not young in my opinion. I feel as old as a wrinkled potato and I hate people reminding me of it.
How old are you? 28. 18 yr old teenager: Geez, I am so sorry! Uncle, I didn't mean to probe... I just thought you might want to do soccer one of these days but... guess you are too old for it.
Oh thank you kiddie. I have been 18 yr old before so I don't need you to remind me of the stage you are currently at.
Either way my age is perceived (I have yet to come across a response that says it is the perfect age for whatever), I would rather the question be not asked in the first place. It also irks me when people like to ask me my age (whether deliberately or otherwise) during my birthday meals. Then they will start to try calculate it out l-o-u-d when I try to shrug it off. Somehow, some people just don't get it.
So, do you like it when people ask you your age? A resounding YES!? A sombre no? Do you desperately try to raise the question yourself? Do you pretend your ears are stuck? What is your thought on people asking you your age?

55. zhuhuifen46 (2677) | 10 months ago | I am ok if asked the question. The issue is whether we are satisfied with our appearance versus our age. It is said, you are as old as you feel yourself. As long as we keep a positive mood and care properly about ourselves in spite of the tedious chores, you will not get annoyed of the question. Take it naturally and face the future with head up in air.

57. kun2349 (7333) | 10 months ago | lol=D Age is just a number to me.. Some say, 26 is a young age, but to me, it's quite old^_^ Well, their perspective is different from ours and thus we cant stop them from asking.. hehe
Just take it in our stride, and if anybody were to ask me, i will proudly tell them my age as i'm proud of it.. Also, i dare to say, my fitness level is even far better than those teenagers now, and i will even dare them to challenge me.. lol=D Thus, u see, being old to those teenagers, do have certain advantages to me^_^ hehe

58. mipen2006 (2451) | 10 months ago | I good question. I teach English in Thailand, mainly to university students and working adults. No kids. When we start a new class, we have a getting to know you, and your teacher. Well two questions that come out very early are how old are you? and Are you married? Both considered less than polite in English, but quite natural in Thai. I answer this in different ways, but usually either tell the truth, or have the students guess. Most guesses are flattering. For your information, I'm sixty-eight.

mipen2006 (2451) | 10 months ago | I have to disagree with you. I would never had asked my teachers their ages. I think it's most impolite, and that's the way I was brought up. Incidently, my mother was a teacher too.

60. LisaHW (1511) | 10 months ago | If children ask I don't mind, because children tend to ask that kind of stuff. I don't think it's very polite for adults to ask another adult. The people we're close to know how old we are, and the specific age shouldn't matter to people who don't already know. After all, they can look at us and get some rough idea of whether we're student-age, young-parent age, grown-kids age, or grandparent age.
That's all the really need to know. In fact, if we're lucky enough to look "parent of young kids" age, when we're really "parent of grown kids age" - all the better.:)
It gets awkward if someone asks your age, though, because if you look younger than you are their jaw drops when you give them some "horrible sounding" number. If you look far older than you really are, their jaw will drop as they realize how bad you look. It's a lose/lose situation.:)
My thing is I remember what it was like to be 10 or 28 or 35. I remember that 10 isn't a baby but it's a child. 28 is very young, but it isn't a teenager. etc. etc. I don't want to "put down" an adult of 28 by saying his age is "like a baby", but I also don't want some 25-year-old knowing my "number" (take a look at the birthday cake picture on your post and add a couple of years) and imagining that I'm "over the hill".
Then again, I know a lot of elderly people who have kids my age - and they treat me as they treat their own kids (as an adult but as a still-young-side one) - and that's kind of nice.

LisaHW (1511) | 10 months ago | I agree about "quit asking". If someone thinks it's important for you to know whether they're 30 or 34 they will let you know.
(And by the way, "What year did you graduate from high school" and "How old were you when your 21-year-old child was born" are nothing more than disguised versions of "How old are you?":) )
