Why celebrate Birth Day ?  

That is my view but people could differ and that doesnot mean I dislike their celebration.

On the evening of Dec. 31, 1899 the English Novelist Poet Thomas Hardy had written a poem named "The Darkling Thrush" mourning the death of a century.
To celebrate one's dooms day one does not remain alive or some people would.

Would you elaborate your story please. It all went over my head.

My son is 19 months old now. They said he wouldn't live to be born let alone live to a birthday. So each birthday we celebrate is to honor having him for as long as we do. In July we will have had him 2 years longer then the doctors ever thought we would.

If birthdays didn't mean anything before now, they mean everything now. To face losing your child to illness, means you learn to take each day as a gift (even when they act like little monsters) So when you get a year of gifts it's time to celebrate.

This is an exceptional case. And even I would participate if it were possible for me. I wish him many a birthday!!!!

I respect how you feel and the fact that I'm sure you have your reasons for it. I gave you my reason above for why I celebrate the day my children have made it through another year as well as below.

I have just one more thing for you to hear from my side of the coin...

I didn't ask to be born. I didn't ask to suffer but I am here. I can celebrate my life because it means that I can make the world better. I can touch the lives of others in a good way. Why not pick the day of my birth to give myself a special moment, something for me, that makes me smile?

I like to make my birthday a day for those who normally I have to do for, to do for me. My husband cooks or takes me out. The kids and I take the day to play and relax.

Why not have a day to call your own? Take the birth and death out of it and just call it your day?

Go in peace and love for that is what brings happiness.

@dragon54u: Nice words to console one. It really read nice but it contradicted to my says. How many are there like you who would celebrate the wrinkle on the face? How many are there that have really passed one year in happiness and were happy to count starts at night?

And another adventure after death is too much of metaphysical. I am human being and wish not to attain sainthood therefore feel it hard to say bye to this mortal world. Or else would prepare for the adventure.

Nicely narrated. I do not disagree to your point. But in that case why not make each day my day? May be tomorrow I wont be there? Why is this sentiment only at the the end of the year? Because we need an excuse. Had the year consisted of 550 days instead of 365? What would happen the old who are at their 80 or 90 could breath their last any day. Why to wait for a year? Then lets celebrate their survival each day and ours too.

Parties are good.... but then so is having a friend around for another year.

But darling...it might be my last! Or are we celebrating the one that's past? I asked this about the New Year's celebration too, which are we celebrating the old (because it's gone) or the new (because we hope it's better)?

Celebrate your life after it ends because you touched the lives of your friends... but that I think is more for your friends.

Celebrate birthdays because you've lasted another 365 to add to the lives of your friends and have enjoyed them being in yours.

New Years.... I celebrated the last one because I loved that 2008 was over. Some years are like that.

AHA! That's how I feel. If I celebrate, say your birthday, it's because I'm celebrating your presence in my life, not that you're getting any older!
I remember seeing an event when I was just a kid, where people were gathered about, all dressed up and just having a good time, but there was something peculiar about it, so I asked my mom what were they doing and she told me it was a funeral! She told me that those people memorialized and celebrated the life of the goner instead of mourning his death. Cool, huh!?

VERY COOL! And also what my funeral is going to be. I've had it planned for better then ten years. Strange for a 23 year old to do but hey, such is life, um death.

WOW! You're right, that it's odd for someone so young to be thinking that way, but it's true. I feel funerals are for those who remain to shed all whatever they feel, whether regrets or joys anyway. And I would rather be remembered for the good things and the good memories.

What is there to cheer about that you have passed 365 days. Everybody does. Why do not think of the one who has passed similar years in starvation? Should not he/she too have celebrated?

It depends on the person.

No amount of hunger that I've known in my life has ever made want to see the end to that life. I have curled in a ball at the age of 10, held my little tummy, and still was thankful to see the sun set that meant I had made it through another day. I loved sunsets for that.

365 sunsets, sunrises and little joys that make up the time between here and there and can be, should be celebrated.

A birthday means you have made it though another year... good, bad, or indifferent.

I would cling to my view. I did not crave to be born. You gave birth to me and now as I am aging down you cheer about it? How cruel you are! If I am now there let me be there and why should I be thankful to God? Let him take my life away any moment He wishes. I am the last person to be thankful to a cruel hand.

since death is there it would show its face sooner or later and what is the point to celebrate birthday? As you wished to give birth to a baby and had therefore copulated and now you are pushing me to celebrate my birthday? You had a baby so you cheer about it why pull me along? I am not you, though you have given birth to me. I do not know you 100% neither you me so what is the point of celebrating my birthday. I am just a by product of your pleasure content and therefore please do not drag me to this birth day anymore.

You can butt in any time TLC, I love your thoughts but I'm a little worried about your son krajibg, that thinks and talks that way to you ... surely he's just testing the waters to see what you might answer and how far he can go with this, because NEVER have I known anyone who had such a negative outlook on BOTH past and future! Surely he can't have a life! And yet he looks so healthy...hmmmmmm.... We better keep the lines of communication open.
