How safe is Online Banking |
| |
| I want to know how safe is online banking. Many of the computers will have viruses, trojans, worms which may not be detected by antiviruses. Not all the malwares are detected by a single antivirus, some are detected by only some antivirus. So we might be harboring lot of viruses, keyloggers in our computer. So there is a possibility of your login informations are sent to some remote person. I have not used online banking till now, I want to know how safe it is. Please let me know. | | | | | |

| | I cannot say for all the banks but in my case I am pretty much confident that they have not been hacked for so long now. I have not read or heard of any news that they were hacked by someone. if they have I guess they were able to make immediate action. An insider from the bank said they hired hackers that they would reward anyone from them if they could hacked into the system and they claimed that since they were hired none have been able to hacked their system. | | | | | | |

| | I've been doing online banking for almost 8 years and never encountered any problems. I am maintaining two accounts from different banks and their online banking are efficient. Same with online shopping, I have been a regular online shopper and just the same never encountered any security problem. I think one of the important thing to consider is having your own computer when you do online transactions. It would be very risky to use public computers. | | | | | | |

| | May be using personal computer is safe than using public computers. There is a higher chance of your account getting hacked if you use public computer. I shall use my own computer to do online banking. | | | |

| | online banking is fine, I have used online banking for my personal and business accounts for aslong as I can remember you have more chance of having your debit card cloned then to get hacked into via online banking, if you are sensible and take very minor steps to protect yourself. Aslong as you keep your spyware and virus definitions upto date and also dont save your passwords on your pc manually enter them everytime, and update windows whenever theres an update this is assuming you have a ligitimate copy of windows etc. | | | | | | |

| | Even if you keep your antivirus up to date there is a minor possibility of virus getting undetected. But still chances are very less of account getting hacked if you keep your antivirus up to date. | | | |

| | yeah true but you have more chance of being robbed while your at the cash point. Also here in uk you are covered by your bank for any fraudulent transaction's I had 1000 uk pounds taken out of my account as had my debit card cloned a few years back reported it to the bank and police and within 48 hours the bank had refunded the money back into my account. | | | |

| | I think online banking is safe. All the steps that are required have been taken by the banks and now it is our duty to protect ourselves from online thefts. If it is your personal computer you use online banking without fear because it is very difficult for a outside person to install a keylogger in your computer and steal your data. | | | | | | |

| | Well... Banking institutions usually take great care designing their login systems as well as spend a good deal of money investing in the security of their online banking portals. I won't say all but a good 99.9% of your online banking transactions will be done through a SSL (Secure Socket Layer) which encrypts data between your computer and the server. It's pretty safe from the data transmission aspect. As far as logging in, key loggers are usually installed on a computer by someone with access to that computer. Firewall technology has come a pretty long way as far as user notification of threats and any open ports you have that a key logger would be using to transmit data are most likely being watched by any firewalls that you have running. If you do not have a firewall software of some type I would recommend investing in one. Key loggers are more of a local threat than a remote one. That said nothing is ever 100% safe but with the security tools available to the consumer these days we can get close enough that major problems are few and far between. Identity theft is more likely to happen from personal documents being stolen from your garbage. | | | | | | |

| | I use online banking for six years now with Wachovia and nothing bad have happen. I use AVG for my antiviruse and zone alarm for firewall. If you are a little nervous about banking online and interesting in doing that, you can check you account at least once a day to make sure all transactions are correct. You can also ask your bank what will happen to your money if an issue about someone getting into your account without your knowledge and what will they do about that situation in getting your money back if they get a hold on it. | | | | | | |

| | Never had any problems either. Should the bank had any issues with regards to security online, by now everyone would know about it anyway. Which bank are you keen on? Perhaps if you're feeling a little intimidated since you haven't taken the first leap yet in using online banking, you may want to spread out your monies with different banks for a start. What i do is, I maintain one account which i use when I buy something online. I don't put a lot of money to it, I would only leave some which is just enough for any impulse shopping. The rest of my bank accounts are accessible via Internet Banking too but I only use them for Personal/Business purposes. | | | | | | |

| | You are trusting the bank to protect your money. As long as the bank keeps hackers out of there system you should be fine. Plus if a hacker did get into there system the chances of you being a target against everyone else is about as good as winning the lottery. The chances of a hacker actually getting in their system is even less than that. Your concern should be your system/computer. Because if you download the wrong file to your computer your information can be hacked and since it would be an individual attack you would be the only victim. Your chances of losing your money just went up big time. As long as you are careful and make sure you know what your downloading on your computer you should be fine. I've been online banking for awhile now and it is convenient and safe. | | | | | | |
