Slavery reparations sneaking in under the radar. |

I supose it should have been expected, but here it is none the less and I haven't seen a breath uttered about it in the news. Enter the Commission to Study Reparation Proposals for African-Americans Act http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h111-40

1. jonesy123 (3254) | 10 months ago | This has been tried multiple times in one form or another over the last few years. It eventually will make its way through and reparation will have to be made. What's another trillion, right?
I don't know how they want to sort this out though. This has now been almost 150 years ago. They have to trace all those relatives and birth records were somewhat scatchy back then. Plus, going forward with the discrimination, that affected and still affects newly arrived Africans turned Americans. We'll end up paying everybody who has a hint of color and is a citizen.
IMO, at one point people simply have to get over the past and not use it as an excuse for their own shortcomings.

2. redyellowblackdog (3989) | 10 months ago | If this actually comes to pass, I'd be willing to bet it sets back race relations 100 years. They might get the money, but blacks would then face worse discrimination by many more people than they have in a long time.
Blacks need to decide. Do they want the reparations or people's respect? They are not going to get both.

xfahctor (5483) | 10 months ago | you ever wonder if they do stuff like this to keep us devided on purpose? mush easier to get away with stuff if the population is busy squabling amongst itself.

|
|
redyellowblackdog (3989) | 10 months ago | One can't rule it out that is the object. It has to be considered because on a legal basis the whole concept of reparations is bogus. There is no question that legally, according to precedent, no descendent of any slave is owed anything by any descendent of any slave holder. Now, if there were any slaves and former slave owners still alive, that's another thing.
If you want to make some of the reparations advocates mad, tell them they owe us for getting them to America where even the poorest blacks are better off than the majority in any African country.

4. lilwonders456 (1926) | 10 months ago | Nope the news has not uttered one word about it. I noticed it on gov track last month. But I have not checked lately to see where it was at. Is it still in subcommittee? This is just a waste of money. But who knows, the gov seems to be really good lately at wasting money so it may stand a good chance at passing.
THis is going to start a snow ball effect. THe native americans are going to want it next....and then women. We got the vote and equal standing in this country AFTER the african americans so I guess in their line of thinking we should get reparations too. Which is stupid. There are no african americans alive today that were ever slaves. And there are not women alive today that did not have the right to vote or equal rights as men. So who would we be paying reparations to and why? Everyone has the same opportunities and rights in todays society so why no one deserves reparations.

krissy32 (170) | 9 months ago | It is a fat waste of taxpayer resources. Sooner or later people are going to have to get over the notion that the world owes them something, it doesn't. It is up to the individual to make something of their lives. If they choose not to do something worthwhile with their lives, that is their problem but they should not be whining for a handout. With the resources of the economy swirling down the commode at a rapid pace, the country can no longer afford to pay reparations for every person who wants to sit on their can and do nothing with their lives.

6. spalladino (9040) | 10 months ago | As Lil said, this is going to start a snowball effect and, personally, I believe that native Americans have a very strong case. I also believe that the Seminole tribe down here in Florida have the money, the power and the political clout to get that ball rolling on behalf of all the native american tribes in the U.S.
If folks are going to drink from the well of past injustices, I have a bone to pick with the United States in this area and I'm sure there are many other Irish Americans who feel the same way. I was robbed of my rightful name, as was my father and his father before him, going back I'm not sure how far. My ancestors came to this country bearing a good and proud Irish name...a name that started with "O'". They were*instructed* to drop the "O" when registering at Ellis Island in an attempt to hide the disgrace of being Irish. They lived in poverty, they were still discriminated against...looked down upon and, while we're at it, the fact that they were Irish Catholics added to their plight.
So, I want reparations, too, on behalf of myself and my siblings, my cousins, my father and his siblings, my grandfather and his siblings as well as their children, my greatgrandfather and on and on. I want an official apology for every Irish man and woman who was robbed of their rightful name by people acting as representatives of this government. I want a study done on the injustices done to the Irish immigrants, both economically and psychologically, and how that effects us now. Many Irish immigrants became indentured servants upon their arrival in this country and were treated very unfairly, itentionally kept in poverty. I know the origin of the "paddy wagon", I cringe at that and at the other offensive stereotypes of the Irish that are the butt of jokes, especially every St. Patrick's day. This nationally recognized*special* day dedicated to my Irish heritage is celebrated how? Wearing green, drinking green beer, getting drunk and making Leprechaun jokes.

xfahctor (5483) | 10 months ago | Come to think of it, I want in on this. In fact, I want it from several countries. I am Pagen, my people were presecuted in eastern Massichusites, and in england and Irelend, thousands more were hung, burned alive and stoned to death. In fact, I want reparations. In fact, you are catholic, YOU owe ME, because WE were the "snakes" driven out of Irleand by your beloved st. Patrick. (you realize I'm being sarcastic right? lol)

7. bobmnu (2651) | 10 months ago | What about the people who came to this country as Bond Slaves, are they going to be counted. What about the people in Georgia who were force over here to work because they were in prison. Don't forget the Chinese who were brought over here to work on the Rail Road.
If this passes are we gong to sue the tribes i Africa who sold the people into slavery or the Arab Pirates who captures ships and sold them into slavery some coming to the US?

8. speakeasy (1429) | 10 months ago | If they wanted to pay reparations they should have done it a long time ago AND Blacks were not the only slaves in the US. Also, you cant just give every black person in America money because a lot of them came to the US AFTER slavery was abolished.
Here is a link to an article that says quite a lot about why it is no longer possible to pay "slavery reparations" - http://www.helium.com/ite... think you will enjoy it.
