My Adopted Ducks Trying To Get Into My House!

A couple of weeks ago I made the mistake of feeding a mother duck and her 11 ducklings. For some reason this mother duck chose to come to my door to beg for food. She was very tame and so were all of her babies. I saw her and thought I would be nice and feed her and her babies some bread I had saved in the freezer. I had the bread in there to take to the park to feed the ducks there. I thought what could it hurt by feeding them here? Boy was I wrong! For the past 2 weeks she has shown up with her entire family begging for food.
As you can see in this attached photo I made the mistake of leaving my patio door slightly ajar overnight. In the morning they all waltzed right into my patio and started quacking at my sliding patio door! My 4 year old daughter almost opened the door to let them in! You can see her here in the photo watching the ducks.
Now I have created a monster and they keep coming every day even though I am no longer feeding them. It is amazing how they remember my house and come regular as clockwork every single day.
I feel sorry for her but my cat likes to hunt and he tried to catch one of her ducklings. She turned around and bit my cat on the tail.
I am now making sure that the patio door is securely latched every night and I am not feeding them any longer. Eventually she will learn that I am not handing out any more charity.
Have you ever had ducks adopt you or a similar situation? Ducks are just like pigeons down here in Florida. We have all kinds of exotic animals here. They are cute, but enough is enough.
Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

Thats cute.
for them to come every day even if your not feeding them any more.
When We lived in New York State close to a state park I would put food out I thought I was feeding cats till I saw that CAT?
Boy was I surprized when it turned out to be skunks!

Oh my gosh! I never heard of feeding wild skunks before. I think that is hilarious! I have never even seen a live skunk before except the ones at the zoo. The ones I come into contact with are always the squashed ones at the side of the road!
Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!

They are so cute! My mom has a farm and raises and sells ducks and other things and from the picture your ducks look like a domestic duck she sell. I can't think of the name of them currently (I just woke up) the one that looks like it is the mother has the white patch on her chest, it looks like it could be in the shape of a heart, if it is those are not wild ducks. They are either from someone's farm and come to your house because you fed them or someone had them as a pet and set them free. Anyway, they will come for some time until they realize that you won't feed them anymore but, I don't know how long it will take for her to figure it out. Good luck!

I think they are wild ducks here though. We have lots of variety of ducks here in South Florida. OMG, they are still coming by daily looking for food but it has been weeks since I fed them. I just try to ignore them and hope they go away.
I think that's cool that your mom raises ducks. Did you get a chance to ask her what type of duck she thinks it is? I'm just curious.

Aww..I think ducks are cute, but I guess they are also agressive from the sound of it. Well, I would feed them somewhere else like leave a bread trail and let them follow it away to somewhere else..she is just a mother trying to care for her babies since she probably has a hard time feeding them all. Maybe if a shelter or a local store would give outdated bread away to feed them people would try to care more for them I can't see the photo since I am answering from email. But I bet it is cute.

Yes, they are cute. They are not so aggressive as they are just pushy in that they want me to feed them. They went away for about a week and now they are back.
OMG, there are 11 babies, which they really are as big as their mama, and the mama - so 1 dozen ducks! I am just hoping that she goes off and finds a new place and they go on and start their own lives. I live right by a canal so that is why they keep coming over here. It is convenient for them.

Ahh, yeah living close to the canal can make them stick around for sure..I would be asking family to five their leftover breads or dried out ones and maybe feed them some but they cold be a problem this summer since every time you would be outside they would think you would feed them so maybe feeding then on down the canal would be best and so it would make them want to search for food father away from your house.

Yes, I am just hoping that they go away soon. I have to remember to keep the screen patio door closed all the way, otherwise they pry it open and come in.
I never thought they would be so tame as to try to come in my house! My son keeps saying we can have duck for dinner!

What a cute picture!
You've just learned why they always say not to feed the wild animals!
Call your local Audubon Society, they can probably tell you how to get rid of them. I hope they don't make a mess on your patio, if you know what I mean...

Honestly, I never thought this would happen. I always thought they said not to feed the animals because they could potentially bite you.
Oh and by the way, yes they did mess my patio that way! Yuck! I broke out the Lysol for that one.
Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!

You have to be careful when you feed ducks. Sometimes they can be aggressive. They sure are cute, but just be careful. I'm glad your daughter didn't open up the patio door!

My closest encounter like that was having a possum come in the back door when I had left the door open a bit for the cats to go in and out the back. I chased him out. Not quite as cute as a mother duck.

Oh, I would love that. Do you have some water close by so she feels at home? I think it must be truly delightful for your daughter to wartch Mother Duck and her offspring parading to your plaxce every day. I knowe I would. Fancy them all being so tame ?

AH...what a wonderful mother you are! To feed a whole family....but I totally understand and they leave a mess on the yard etc! I haven't had ducks adopt me...but we have tons of them down by the lake and the city had to send out a warning not to feed them anymore...why? Because their droppings were making the street slippery!!!! Go figure!

Hey schlzie! I laughed when you said that the ducks were like
pigeons in Florida! I do understand what you mean! I live in
NY so I sure know all about pigeons! We have a big family of
geese in my neighborhood. In fact, it is quite an extended
family! They run the neighborhood! Some people feed them so
then they will frequent that particular area for awhile. I am
an animal lover, but these geese are dirty, scary (they bite)
and leave disgusting messes (if you know what I mean)all over
the sidewalks! So as cute as your ducks are, and they are cute!
I do understand that you can't continue to feed them! Hopefully,
they will get the message sooner or later. At least I hope so
for your sake!

Well, now come Duck Hunting you have your own. But since you live in a city that is out. They remember sometimes btter then dogs. Ok they are cute but I never would of gave them food. As there also a pain in the Butt as you are finding out. We have Geese up here all over the place. I don't like them and you can't kill them to eat or anything. But you can out of town or city as people raise them. And they raise ducks as well. Well, yes call animal control and they will tell you what to do. Or they will come get them and put them back in park. Your friend onlydia

No, I would never go hunting anyways. I love animals too much. However, I don't think animal control would do anything as they can fly and we are right off of the canal. There are lots of ducks that live in the canals here.
I have stopped feeding them but they are still coming by. I never really realized how intelligent they were to remember exactly where to come back to.
Oh well, live and learn.

They are cute. I am sure they can be a nuisance. I haven't had any ducks to come to my home looking for a hand out. My sister lived next to a pond and she had ducks coming to her house often. She has since moved so I don't know of any other incidents with duck.
I hope they do leave before the cats make a meal out of some of them.
