History repeating itself |
| |
| Hello to all you American political commentators out there! A friend sent me this newspaper cartoon a little while ago. It dates from 1934. Have a look at it and you'll see that nothing has changed since then. The cartoons comment is just as valid today, or even more so, as it was then. | | political cartoon | | | | |

| | I think that history does repeat itself. Nobody was expecting a recession and a depression which left so many people begging for money and a better living. The same happened recently, nobody had predicted such a situation with all the job losses! Economists had suspicions things were going wrong, but had no certainty as to what was going to happen. | | | | | | |

| | Certain people have been forecasting a recession fot the last 10 or 15 years, but they were expecting it to start in the 90's. That's what history teaches us, continous growth is not sustainable in the long run and sooner or later the bubble will and has burst. | | | |

| | The sad fact is that the "Great Depression" was starting to recover when the government stepped in to help. First was a protectionist Tariff by President Hoover, and that was followed by massive spending by the government under President Roosevelt. WWII would have pulled us out of the depression and lead to Economic Growth but the massive government debt and lack of private capital prevented economy from growing. We did not see economic growth until the mid 1950'. | | | | | | |

| | It is not that history repeats itself, it's that ideals repeat themselfs, ever listen to R.E.M.'s song it's the end of the world, it's still true today, how about the four fundmental forces? The greeks thought fire, earth, wind, water were the elments of everthing, now it's strong nuclear force, weak nuclear force, electromagntism, & gravity. Which will proably change again. We learn from are histroy, we just don't apply that knowledge | | | | | | |

| | I'm sure that Franklin D. Roosevelt had plenty of people in his day, like the artist for that cartoon, poking fun at his efforts to combat the effects of the great depression on peoples lives. Right or wrong, his efforts to involve the government to ease the suffering of the common man (and woman) worked, and ultimately helped to end the depression and get us back on our feet. Obama faces very similar circumstances, with plenty of detractors, too. I can only hope that the results for his efforts will be like history repeating itself. | | | | | | |

| | Roosevelt's efforts actually PROLONGED the depression. It would have ended much sooner had it not been for all the government intervention and spending. | | | |

| | Yes, recycled political comment. With some changes, this could serve just as well as a present day political commentary. | | | |
