It is not really a long time, but it is a start. I don't have any here to smoke and I am not going to buy any more. I did go and get nicotine gum today and have started chewing it as directed on the package. It is actually better than the last time I tried to quit using it. It now comes in a fruit flavor that is sugar free. Wish me luck. Today will be my first full day of smoke free. I have to do it this time. 50 bucks for a carton of cigarettes is absolutely ridiculous.

congrats and good luck. i'm smoking my last pack. there is no way i will pay 50 bucks for a carton either. does the fruit flavor taste better than the "fresh mint"?

myLot reputation of 93/100. JABeau59 (221)   ranked 25 out of 744 in smoking  8 months ago

If you like juicy fruit better than doublemint you will like the fruit better and visa versa. It is better than the last time I tried with it. That was about 10 years ago. It has now been 22 hours. I haven't smoked. Hooray! And if you are near a walmart, the equate brand is half the price and is working just fine for me.

Keep it up!
Stay away from any smokers or smoking areas, keep yourself distracted!
Always think of the advantages, and here are some more (let's assume you stopped RIGHT NOW):
-In 8 hours CO levels in your blood will drop by half, oxygen levels will return to normal
-In 48 hours your risk of having a heart attack will decrease, nicotine will have left your body and your taste and smell return to normal
-In 72 hours you'll feel more energetic
-Between 2 and 10 weeks, your blood circulation will improve
-Between 3 to 9 months your lung capacity will increase
-In 1 year, your risk of having a heart attack will drop to half
-In 5 years the risk of having a stroke is the same as a non smoker
-In 10 years, the risk of having lung cancer is the same as a non smoker
-And finally, in 15 years the risk of having a heart attack is the same as a non smoker!

It's a long time, but don't pick up any bad habits along the way such as a bad junk food diet to make up for smoking.

I have been trying to do things that I couldn't do and smoke. Like sorting out clothes to give to charity. I have never smoked in my house, so I am kinda staying inside. Hubby is great. He has been taking the dogs outside for me as that is a really big smoking trigger for me. Thanks for the support.

Congratulations!! You can do it, you know you can! It's just a matter of breaking that physical habit of hand/arm motion more than anything. Be sure to avoid behaviors that led to your having one, like drinking coffee at the breakfast table. If you had one there, move your coffee to the living room or out on the porch. By avoiding the behaviors you avoid the craving for the habit.

You'll be glad tomorrow when you realize you've gone a whole day. Soon it'll be a few days then a week--hooray for you! thumbup

I agree. I don't have the nicotine withdrawl if I stop completely... its the mental side of it. Just like.... um, what am I supposed to do if there's no cigarette in my hand???

myLot reputation of 98/100. dragon54u (9445)   ranked 232 out of 744 in smoking  8 months ago

Well, you can type replies to discussions and make some money here! You can also go outside and dig in the dirt to prepare flower beds or a veggie garden. You can join Helium or some other writing site and start writing articles or fiction. Clean your house, scrub the sinks, etc.

I know it's tough but you'll figure out what to do with your hands. You could even polish your nails. happy

22 hours dragon. Whoo hoo! I am starting to wash jackets and things that had smoke smell in them so I will not get tempted. I don't drink coffee, so that is not a problem. Walking my little doggies is what is one of the biggest triggers. Hubby has been doing that for me today. He is a sweetie and also a supportive non-smoker.

good luck...

while you were trying to quit, here i am starting an old habit... it just has gotten too stressful these days here that thinking about smoking feels like freeing my mind of all the worries i have now. i think it was three weeks ago, that i started smoking again, and it did made me feel a little bit ok... as i see the smoke going up, floating in the air... inhaling it, the minty flavor of it... reminds me of my youth. i wasnt that a big smoker, and i stopped when i got into a relationship...

here i am now, not to worry though, i have full control of myself, even if i itch for that 1 stick i can stop myself from going for it. i only smoke when i really really feel like smoking and when nobody is around the house... (guilty - hehehe), just to release some stress.

myLot reputation of 93/100. JABeau59 (221)   ranked 25 out of 744 in smoking  8 months ago

It has been 22 hours now. I am on my way. I can't condemn you for smoking because I did enjoy it. I am just not foolish enough to let the government charge me for the pleasure.

6. myLot reputation of 85/100. Gorjess (1065)   ranked 140 out of 744 in smoking   8 months ago

Congratulations and keep it up. It is the first week that is hardest and If you have another cigarette you'll have to start quitting all over again. My boyfriend is in his third week of quitting, he is using patches and they really seem to help, he doesn't even seem to be struggling but gets a bit grumpy occasionally. He has an inhalator but says using both makes him feel a bit sick. He doesn't like the gum or inhalator so much as it's not a nice taste, but to be honest if he started smoking now he'd hate the taste of that too!

Keep up the good work, I recommend trying patches or any other way of quitting, some days he realizes he forgot to put a patch on, like today and still didn't have a cigarette so he knows he doesn't need to rely on patches.

Good luck and think of the money you're saving.

myLot reputation of 93/100. JABeau59 (221)   ranked 25 out of 744 in smoking  8 months ago

Gorjess, thank you for supporting me. And congrats to your boyfriend. I wish I could try the patches, but I am allergic to the sticky stuff that holds them on. I am allergic to band aids too, so that makes sense. But I think the gum helps me a little more because I am doing something with my mouth. The fruit gum is really not too bad. It does make me burp though. I think I chew it too fast. But it does help.

myLot reputation of 85/100. Gorjess (1065)   ranked 140 out of 744 in smoking  8 months ago

Oh that is a shame you can't try the patches, I think the first time my boyfriend tried to quit they just made his skin red and dind't stick, but no problems this time.
There are pills you can take too but I don't personally know anyone who tried them, actually I bumped into an old man at hospital when my boyfriend went to a one on one meeting, he said he tried the pills and it's the first time he's been able to quit in 65 years! They say it's best to have help if you want to quit, and my stubborn, childish boyfriend was never the type to go and do something properly but after two quitting smoking meetings he has come out quite positive. They measure something in your blood, some toxins and he was under very heavy smoker, nearly off the chart, then a week later after no cigarettes he was down as a light, nearly non smoker. So going to meetings may really benefit you and make you really want to succeed more as someone is guiding you through it, I'm in the UK, and these 'counselors' then supply you with free or very cheap quitting supplies which can get very expensive here.

Thank you my friend. It is hard but I am going to make it this time. One big reason is I don't want to smoke with the little foster children around. That wouldn't be good for them. I didn't smoke around my hubby because he has asthma. It was really just time to stop. I can't afford the ridiculous prices, so that was a good motivator. Thanks again.

CONGRATS!

This is my second week of "cut back smoking". I was going to cold turkey it with the gum... and I just don't have the will power yet to give them up completely. I"m not quitting because I want to be healthier or anything like that, I'm quitting because of cost. SO, I went from 20-30 cigs a day, down to 5ish a day. One pack every 4 to 7 days is much more manageable then one a day or whatever.

SO - i will say a HUGE good luck to you! And the new gum is quite refreshing! lol. I got the mint kind. OH, and if you run out, instead of paying $40 for a box... go on ebay. I got mine for $13.50... and I also made the mistake of NOT reading the directions and chewed it like regular gum, holy crap does that make you sick! lol

Okay, good luck again!!!! And if you need any support... I'm here for ya! And CONGRATS for making the change!;o)

myLot reputation of 93/100. JABeau59 (221)   ranked 25 out of 744 in smoking  8 months ago

Thanks shell, I appreciate your support. I will say good luck to you too. Maybe you will find that 4 is really not worth it either. And thanks for the info on the gum. I will check it out. I bought the equate brand from walmart and it was only 25 for a box of 100 of the 2 mg. gum. I did read the instructions better this time because I got sick the last time from chewing it too long at a time. Thank you shell, and I may pm you if I need some support.

myLot reputation of 86/100. shell2784 (230)   ranked 120 out of 744 in smoking  8 months ago

You're very welcome... and thank YOU!

And by the way... my $13.50 was for a box of 170 4mg!:o) GREAT deal! lol

myLot reputation of 93/100. JABeau59 (221)   ranked 25 out of 744 in smoking  8 months ago

Thanks again, I will definitely check it out when I need some more gum. That is quite a deal.
