Well, we already had the balcony when we moved in, it's off our living room and it's not huge, but big enough for a small patio table and chairs. We love it. Love sitting out there when it's not too hot or cold and watching the geese on the lake behind us. I think you should do what makes you happy and not worry about what everyone else thinks.

Personally I feel that having a balcony is a great idea.It sure gives you the breathing space.(Pun not intended)It lets in more air and light. And you never feel that you are confined and claustrophobic with an abetting balcony which is open.

Do what makes you happy and who cares what anyone else thinks! If you feel you can still have a comfortable amount of space in your bedroom AND have a balcony that you'd get continued use out of, then I say go for it. It's a decision that's totally your's and your Husband's, so unless someone has concerns about the building structure and possible safety issues, then it's really none of their business.

building authorities wouldnot allow us to make a additional balcony outside the room but they did give us the go ahead of this plan of making the room smaller with a balcony.as you know ,we stay in a joint family and only me and sam think this to be a good idea...

If one has balcony alongside the room, it becomes easier to get the fresh air and to get a view of outside world. However, making a room smaller for the sake of Balcony may not be a sane idea. A large room is more important and useful than a smaller room + balcony. Please check if you can carve one or two small windows from your room to get fresh air, that would be a better option.

In that case, you may go for constructing a balcony.

I love to have balconies everyplace I live or stay and I for one would advise you to go ahead and have one. But I suggest that instead of making your room smaller, why don't you just build one extending from your wall unless of course there's a problem as to the lot area. But you could have a balcony jutting out over your own lot depending on where you put it.

Oh if the problem is the law I guess you cannot go around it and have to comply. Therefore,if you indeed want to have a balcony, the only option seems to be for you to make your room smaller.

Hello my friend riyasam Ji, I think, one should do as per one's own plan, as it suits to oine's benifits. let's listen to all and do the best ways, which would suit me. I think, you should go ahead with construction of balcony. May God bless you and have a great time.

I guess it really depends on what you like and what you would get more use out of. If you aren't using the space in your room that much, you won't be missing it that much and get a nice balcony in return. If you think you would actually be missing out on living space and there are hardly any sunny days for you to use the balcony then I would not get a balcony when renovating. You can try to make a list with pre and cons and see if that helps you make up your mind. Good luck!

hi yeah, it is alwayz preferable to have a balcony-it can really serve as a good pastime.i cud stand for hours together on my balcony in my earlier flat since it was facing the main road.but in ur case to build a balcony at the expense of the room may not be a very good idea.but if your room is very spacious-then you cud certainly go ahead with it.i wud opt for a balcony only if my room was more than 4x4 metres.

Hi Riya, I think there is no need of confusion. You are staying there and you people know how it will works and how it consume spaces etc. if you people feel that it is good then go ahead. No need to listen other people, you are making for your own convenience, don’t you, riya. I think a balcony will add the beauty of the house. Consider the spacing problem and take a wise decision. Good luck dear.

If there is good view and good air I dont see why making a balcony could be foolishness. Except in the rains it is nice to sit in the balcony and if there is proper railing the kids would enjoy themselves there. I think if you like the idea of a balcony you should just go ahead and not care what others say..... PS: Do show us a picture of your balcony after you finally get it done.

I like balcony too. For me, it is not foolishness to add a balcony as long as you will not reduce the size of your room? instead, it will expand because there is an additional balcony, How come it will reduce your room size when you put up balcony? I am just wondering. But to me, it is nice to have a balcony.

we cannot take extra space or make a balcony jutting out as the society would not give us permission to do so.

Well I would opt for what I want. It's as simple as that. I'm not going to listen to what others say cause it's my house, it's my decision. However, what I will be concerned is the budget in renovating the house and how badly we need it. Ciao!

Oh yeah, you are now living with your in-laws if I remember it right. Well if that is the case you should consider what other family members has to say. But in my opinion, still who ever owns the house should make the decision.

If you were feel comfy to have a smaller room and have a balcony, go for it, riya. After all you and your family will be the one to live there and if it's okay with your Hubby and your family then it maybe sounds great for you. I personally prefer a house with balcony even if it's small. In Mumbai we lived in a apartment and luckily we're in the rooftop and the balcony is big, but we shared it with the owner. Almost everyday I sit in the balcony and watched the sunset and the ocean, sometimes I just watched the busy road and the people. Actually I've seen the parade of Indian Cricket team when they won the world cup from the balcony, but I didn't saw them close. Now our apartment has no balcony, there's small in the back where he hang our clothes, but you can't see anything.

A balcony looks very nice and you think of having one so that you can sit out.I have seen so many who have balconies but they really don't use them.So I feel it's a waste you might as as well use that space to make your room more spacious and use a big french window with lots of glass so that you have more light and can have a view.Like you I too was fascinated with balconies now that I am planning my house I have concluded not to have balconies.

All through her life my mom harped on only one fact that our house and that every house should have a balcony. We have quite a few balconies and its beautiful. we cannot think of living without balconies. Now, things are changing though. space is a criterion that has to be made proper and most use of. Still, I would suggest you go for a small balcony no matter what. You can always decorate your interior with utility furniture. Congratulations on your 10000!!

in mumbai especially, due to the space crunch having a balcony is considered as a luxury but i feel the need for a balcony,i am sure to feel suffocated without onr!(maybe alot depends on our upbringing too

It depends on how small the rooms are now and whether it will be harder to keep clean. You will have less space to put things if you are going to add a balcony. I do not seem any harm in it as long as you take the above in consideration. It could be those who are against it think that you are being a bit uppity and show off, but if it gets really hot you can go out in the balcony and you could also put some plants there so it would not just be a luxury item.

yup, that is one of the reasons why some elders are not for it but i think i can fit in all the needed items well and the balcony can be used for storing some of my kids toys as well and as for plants,i do have that idea in mind!!

I would love a balcony to sit out on in the summer! You can't listen to others on something like this. In the end....it is you that has to live with the decision you make. I can't imagine why anyone would tell you it is foolish but I think it sounds like a great idea.
