Here I've been kvetching about my carpal tunnel/wrist injuries, and then I come across this story
I saw this the other night about 78 year old....that's right 78 year old, Sister Madonna Buder who is known as the "Iron Nun" Years and years ago, when she first became a nun, she wore the usual full nun's habit, but one is more likely to see her in a workout outfit these days. What makes her so special? At 78 years old this nun races triathlons...you know those grueling tests of strength and endurance that combines swimming, cycling and running and has as the article says, "participated in more than 320 of them -- 40 of which were Ironman class events consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26-mile run."
This is an article about her and shows a video (NOT a referral link but to the article and video)
http://abcnews.go.com/WN/Story?id=7671970&page=1
Buder serves as an inspiration throughout her community -- to both the young and old. And she's a magnate on the racing circuit, where competitors flock to see the nun in spandex who doesn't know the word "quit.
"She inspires the people like the everyday person to get out and give it a shot. To get out and, you know, get a little self confidence and push yourself," said Earl Walton, who ran with Buder this spring at a race in St. Croix.
"Age doesn't matter... I think she's just great," said Joan McCann, a member of Buder's church.
You might say she trains religiously -- and she does it seven days a week between work at her church.
Her advice for a long and healthy life? Never give up and never slow down.
I don't know about you but this woman puts me to shame---I'm some 23 years younger than her and I think I'm having a GOOD day if I walk a few blocks or do at least 30 sit-ups a day, and I think her advice of never giving up and never slowing down is priceless, don't you? Okay----who wants to start jogging with me tomorrow? LOL Yeah--right
Raise hands--how many of you could swim a 2.4 mile swim, cycle for 112 miles or run 26 miles?

It figures she's a nun! She should have passed those great genes down the family tree!
I gave your last question some thought... how many of you could... you know. Well, I think I could get about 2 feet in the running competition. I MIGHT just get 10 or so feet in the swimming thing and cycling? Maybe one revolution; one and one half on a good day.
Anywho, good for her!!! It's so very awesome to hear of older folks who haven't let age slow them down. Of course, many of us old fogies have physical problems that have slowed us down but there are some who have no major complaints who use age as an excuse to slow down. I applaud this woman for giving life her all!

I happen to know a woman down the block who will be 77 this year, and while she's not jogging, cycling, etc, like the "iron nun" I swear she has more energy than me

I know the type. When my oldest son was 2 years old, he had a "girlfriend" who lived a few houses up from us who was 92 years old and was completely self-sufficient. She even still had perfect eyesight! Not fair!!!

Just kidding, of course. I couldn't go that much on any of them! Like you said about yourself, riding my bike, I think it's a good day if I go just a mile! lol There's no way I could run twenty-six miles. I can't even run a mile. And I'm a good bit younger than she is myself as well.
It does inspire me to do better with exercising, that's for sure. I might not ever be able to go the distance she does, but who knows. Still it does make me want to do more haha.

That would not be me! I am only 42 and there is no way that I could do one of these...much less all three.
I am sending the link to some of my friends...especially the older ladies at church. My hat is off to this dear lady!

Reading this I feel more ashamed then you cos I think I have a body of an 80 years old but with a face of a 40+ woman. I have been more conscious of my looks then that of my body. I take great care of the upper part but neglected the parts below the neck. I have been saying many times that I would start a tough exercise regime to stay healthy and fit but never seems to materialize. I always think that I am still physically strong and exercise has no importance in my daily agenda. Now you make me feel like jumping to the wagon and start exercising right away. Yes, put me on the list with you so we'll jog till we are breathless. I definitely see the good that comes with consistent exercise. Who wouldn't want to stay evergreen with no complain? I would love to avail myself to any form of exercise if it means that I would stay fit and healthy till my ripe old age.

You and me both--LOL While I'm 53 years old many say I could pass for my 30s---now my body is something else--not that I'm not slim, I am, and have kept myself thin, but definitely out of shape and there are days I get up and feel like 150 years old. I used to do a very regimented combo yoga and ballet exercise routine, but haven't in years and have really neglected myself. Just down the block I know this friend of mine who is to be 77 soon--nuts she has more energy than I do
Okay--I'm making a promise to myself---starting tomorrow I'm going to slowly add some of those yoga exercises--it would HAVE to be slow unless I want to wind up hospitalized...LOL

Hi pye,
I gave up wondering why some people like Iron Nun can do what she does and I walk with a cane at age 59 and still feel in my heart like I'm 10 years younger. I just recently admitted to myself that I'm not the healthy person I've always wanted to be. I woke up this morning with my hand frozen with numbness and excruciating pain because I forgot to wear my brace. I'm finally realizing that that's life and have no desire to run any race. BTW 30 sit ups is nothing to balk at! So you walk your few blocks and do your 30 situps and feel good about it. We are all made of different stuff. Hugssss

Well Pye if you manage 30 sit ups a day and a walk you are doing way better than me! Watching this amazing woman on the video I feel more than ashamed; I am so lazy! I am a person who is always on the go but as far as exercising...
I am embarrassed to say that my fitness level is probably that of an elderly woman and I am still in my forties! Shame on me and good on you Sister Madonna!
Yeah, sure I'll come jogging, yeah, really...

Pye-
I could do the swim, but not the rest lol. My hats off to Sister Buder for showing us that nuns are people too! It's very inspirational to see and hear about people like this who in their elder years are still as spry as they were in their youth. I think it also goes to show what daily prayer/meditation can do in your life. It keeps you young. I hope I'm this spry when I reach 78! Thanks for yet another inspirational article and discussion. We really need them as a civilization. I hope your pain is calm this week.

I always get a kick of the Boston or NY marathons as there usually always a few senior citizens that participate---they may not win first place and are usually the last straggling in but they don't give up and finish to the end--one has to admire that

This story comes at such an ironic tie b/c I just started reading a health book called "you staying young" and the very first few pages said basically that you don't HAVE to "get old" as you age. It said how people just assume they will break down as they get older so they give up and stop taking care of themselves. This lady is a great example that anyone can do anything if they take care of themselves and put their mind to it. Good for her!
And no, I couldn't do any of those things, but I'm trying :) I'm not going to "get old" without a fight!

Hey Pye! Yeah! Let's go jogging! Right! I'm with you on the
maybe I can walk a few blocks to the stores and hope that I
can get back with my groceries without dropping! How does she
do it? I am ashamed of myself after reading about this most
amazing woman! I just don't know how she does it, or do I?
Could it be "Divine Intervention"? Yay think? She definitely
is an inspiration! Now I will have to put on my walking shoes
and give it a go for sure! I will have to push myself even
harder than I have been with no more excuses! I'll let you
all know how I'm doing! If you don't hear from me soon you'll
know I stopped somewhere to take a long break...
