Getting Older: Eye Pain = Eye Strain. I Need Reading Glasses! :(

This morning I woke up with a sore eye that was red and bloodshot. It ached, it still does 5 hours later. I took some Tylenol and when I close my eye it feels much better. The thing is that I was on my computer until about 1:30 am last night and I think I did not sleep very well. On top of that I now need reading glasses for reading and I think I need them for the computer as well. The reason I think that is that I just put on my reading glasses in order to sit down here and use the computer. The minute I put them on I noticed that the screen was easier to read and my eye hurt less. So, I was wondering - does anyone here use reading glasses in order to use the computer? Is this just another sign of aging? Oh well, at least I can still see. Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

I'm beginning to think I'll need glasses for my pc, sometimes I can't see so well. I get my reading glasses from the dollar stores and they do a great job. Haven't used them for the computer yet but they're so cheap--$1--that I can have a pair in every room and never lose them! If I do, big deal! If you wear glasses anyway and need reading glasses incorporated into them, try Zenni Optical. Glasses start at $8 and the quality is excellent. A friend of mine just got bifocals from them and saved $300.

I do need a pair of new glasses and I also get eye strain and wake up with headaches that sometimes turn into migraines. My glasses were broken years ago and never replaces. I have changed my fonts to appear larger so I can see better and not strain so much but still it can irritate my eyes alot.

Honey, I even put my glasses on in the dark to walk to the bathroom. Yes, it goes with getting older, but also with new challenges, like computer use. It sounded more to me like you had some sinus pain going on, though, with just the one eye sore and red.

I needed glasses for reading years ago. I took advantage of a free eye test and ended up with a pair of $300 prescription glasses. Several years later my partner was having problems and he started to borrow mine. He went for an eye test eventually and the optometrist said he just needed magnifiers. I had mine tested again with the same result!! I either lose them or they get scratched...$20 is better than $300. I need them for everything! I can't walk with them and I don't need them to drive thankfully.

Of course it is another sign of aging though the first glasses I was ever prescribed when I was in my teen was for the most part exclusively for the computer. My father, after about 20 years or so, finally got new lenses and one of the things I made him do was to get anti-reflective coating on the glasses. He thought it was a waste of money 'til he got the new glasses. Now he is very happy he did that! Thanks Zelo

I am older than you are and usually spend more than 6 hours using my conputer. Thanfully I still do not need reading glasses. A person before me suggested that you may not actually need reading glasses. This person may be right. Long exposures to computer monitors can affect the eyes. The redness indicated an irritation due to several other reasons including not resting the eyes, insufficient ambient light, and sitting too close to the monitor. Maybe you may have to change certain things to delay the real need for reading glasses. all the best, rosdimy

Hey schulzie! Of course you should put on your reading glasses to use the computer! I have been doing that for a very long time! Don't be so vain! We all do it! If it helps you to see then that means it is necessary! Don't try to strain your eyes when you have the glasses which are already the answers!

http://vision.about.com/od/sportsvision/tp/Red_Eye.htm The pain seems to indicate an infection or inflammation. It could be an emergency situation where if left could damage the eye. I would go to emergency and have it looked at. If it is red due to a burst blood vessel it is usually less serious, although shocking to look at. This used to happen to my mother who was on blood thinners, white parts of her eye would turn red if a blood vessel burst but she did not feel any pain. It looked horrible but went away on its own. Having reading glasses past 40 is normal as the cornea becomes less flexible and ceases to focus on near objects. I have myopia (I cannot see long distance clearly) so my eyes generally focus about where the computer screen is normally so I actually have to take my glasses off to read. When working on the computer you should look away every 20 minutes or half hour to rest your eyes.

I wear glasses for everything. The computer screen does do a lot of damage whether you wear glasses or not. It causes eye stain. It's kind of funny, sometimes after spending a while on the computer (while wearing my glasses), I have to actually take my glasses off to relive some of the pain from staring at the screen for so long.

I have very low eye power and im 26!I do use reading glasses while I am using the computer and while watching TV. That is it. I don't have difficulty reading without them, but then my head hurts at times if I don't use my specs and am at the PC for long hours. I also rub my palms,so they get warm and then place them over the eyes when they hurt. Another thing you could do is, take breaks and close your eyes and excercise them. :)

My friend took her four kids to get an eye test and they all have to wear glasses two wear them all day and the other two are just for reading and when they are in the computer. What they told her is that the eyes get tired from looking at the screen and it make the eye sight weaker. So they have to see less TV and the computer screen because its afecting their sight. I do not know if that is also true for adult but I guess it could be since we are staring at the screaning for long period. So it might not be the aging part. Happy myLotting to you too.

eye pain, eye strain does not mean aging. that means you are doing something wrong with your eyes. maybe you stay long at the front of the computer and sometimes dont give your eyes to take a rest and then you wet it or you take a bath. thats a big NO. i dont use reading glasses but my eye hurt too and my head ache when i spend to much time on the tv playing video games or watching movies and shows. har har har. so dont say you are old. we get this really even if we are young.
