Online Game Addict... |
|
As some ppl here know, Hubby and I play an online game called EverQuest II. Although it’s a lot of fun and time consuming, we both enjoy it…especially Hubby since he’s pretty much housebound and it’s his way of getting out.
At the same time, we do other things. We both still MyLot, do our mail, I take care of the house, visit my Mom, read, and do quilting. In other words, we still have other interests besides the game.
But what about the true addicts? Ppl that get into an online game and the real world ceases to exist. They stop bathing, sleeping, going to work/school, they lock themselves away with their computers forgetting about the kids, their spouse and family. They only live for the game. A lot of the time they gain massive amounts of weight b/c they are eating and not moving around at all or very little.
In severe cases I’ve read in the news where ppl have not paid attention to their kids and the kids have died falling out a window, starved to death from not being fed or they’ve found new love interests in the game and tossed aside their current relationships.
What makes a person climb in a game and never want to come out? At what point do you or someone else step in to try to stop this self-destructive behavior? Are you addicted to an online game and to what degree?

11. glords (1434) | 7 months ago | you are strong to dabble in ever-crack and not become addicted. I've known several people who failed classes in college because they couldn't leave the game to go to class. I played a online game with my hubby when we were in college. It was called "Dark Ages of Camelot." We must have played it for two or three months. I was addicted, but not to a place that it damaged my life. I just played the game with every free second of my day. I realized that I wanted my life back so I canceled my account. I felt so sad to say goodbye to my character. I'd spent so much time and effort to develop her and it was hard to pull the plug. That feeling of loss when I quit the game has inspired me to never go back. I think it was unhealthy.
As for people who cheat of their spouse because of a game... well I think they are the types that would cheat in real life if given the opportunity. I think the spouse should consider themselves lucky. Kick them to the curb and find someone who spends more time working on their own character rather then a fictional one.

12. mcelhenney (307) | 7 months ago | I have played a few games online..I don't play as much as I use to..I don't know what makes a person get so involved in games that they quit doing anything else..At the first sign of some one not taking care of their children, some one needs to step in or they need to get the person to a professional who will know what to do.I do not know any one who is addicted to games. It is like any other addiction and they need help.It is a sickness that affects everyone around them.

13. muscles4me (8851) | 7 months ago | That sounds spooky to me that people could get that involved and find a new love interest in a game? And to sit there and paly a game to the point of not feeding your kids? Unbelievable...............

14. candy2306 (471) | 7 months ago | Hi, till date I'm an addict of Yahoo Grafitti! It's a game of drawing on a canvas and having it guessed! I just love it so much! But it's easier to use mouse than touch-pad when using laptop! It's even more interesting if you play in a team(online group).

15. gcorp09 (548) | 7 months ago | Well, I'm not into online gaming, but my hubby do play occasionally. I had have friends and colleagues who are online gaming players, but they do exercise control in some sense. It's a pity that some had fallen, and play all the time. I do say that for these people, if they are not self-aware of their addict towards online gaming, and no one discovered or tried to stop them, they will continue...

16. Davidarich (766) | 7 months ago | You don't have to reach that point to be an addict: like other addictons, if it starts to interfere with your life, relationships, studies etc. then it is a problem. I have a son-in-law and two grandsons who fall into that category: yes, they have other interests, es they go out; but they are obsessed by the games, too much of the household budget gets absorbed by it, our daugnter has become a slave to the house becouse no-one will lend a hand; the kids are sullen and morose if they have to stop playing....

18. suzzy3 (3995) | 7 months ago | Do people really forget their kids,I could not do that they make to much noise.Joking apart it is a real problem for some people thats for sure.I have never personally known anyone who is that bad. They must be depressed thats all I can think, they find some kind of solace in the game,a bit like an alcholic does with drink or a drug addict. How could you live with yourself if you harmed your child in some way,or worse.I like doing this but you have to put your priorites into your family and like I say mine make to much noise, when mine say they are hungrey that is it,or a mealtime is due I am in the kitchen like most other parents cooking up something nice for them to leave because they hate that type of food, they liked it last week.I feel so sorry for any family having to play second fiddle to a game, definatley not healthy at all.

19. guybrush (3500) | 7 months ago | I love playing adventure games on the PC - the Dark Fall series is my current favourite, and anything by Jonathan Boakes, especially his latest, The Lost Crown - but I started many years ago with Monkey Island, Kings Quest, etc. Unfortunately, those types of games are few and far between these days, as the war and killing games seem to be more popular. However, there is a nice little online game called Cradle of Rome which I've become addicted to - it's just a matching game with 100 levels, but it's great as escapism, and one level is never enough! I've finished it many, many times, and have to force myself to stop, as I've been known to spend hours on it in one session. A worrying thing I read in the weekend paper was that in Japan (I think), they have now formulated a special 'food' for gamers to eat. It apparently has all the vitamins and minerals in it which gamers miss out on, through not stopping to cook proper food. A horrible sign of the times!

20. chunijole (2865) | 7 months ago | I used to be addicted to a lot of online games. Then it became really time consuming and my family had to do an intervention on me. So I have quit playing online games for the last couple of years. I just post and watch videos now and am very responsible with my online time.
