Picking Peas  

Yes fresh peas really are delicious. We decided to can them this year, since you just never know when the lights may go out, or a disaster my keep them off for days at a time. Plus, freezers do go out, and oh, what a waste when that happens too. My sisters recently went out, and it was a very large freezer.
When i lived in Lufkin, the hurricane came through there twice, and the lights were off days at a time, on each time. Canning just seems like the best solution.
Those wet towels really do help. A large wet towel drapped over the shoulders will really help in keeping you cooled off.

I don't think those peas will last much longer in the field either. It was too hot, and the ground too dry. Some were already going to seed. The last ones he planted, i dont think will make either, even though they did have some color showing through.

I usually add in a little salt (if it needs it) and a little bacon. That is usually all that a good pot of peas needs. We usually just use them as a side dish. And of course, cornbread to go along with them.

We haven't eaten any yet. My sister canned 19 jars last night, after i came home. I am going over in a few minutes to get out some more jars.

My brother in law priced a bushel of peas at another place the next day. The price: 28.00 and he would have to pick them!

Those wet towels, really do the job, that they are meant to do, on a hot day. That is what kept us cooled off enough to stay out there.

We picked purple hull peas. Those things were good too. We have eaten some, as well as canning them. I think he put them on sale, so he could get rid of them quickly. The heat index has been really bad this past week, and most things are just drying up. Even my sister's garden is just wilted by midday, and even with watering it every day, it still wilts down. I even have to go out and spray over my poultry to keep them cooled down.

Good ol' purple hull peas, u can't beat them. They haven't come in here yet. I don't need any in the freezer this year but sure will be having some fresh ones. I know u will enjoy yours. U DEFINIETLY GOT A BARGAIN. HAPPY DAYS TO U. WTACH that heat. I have a friend in NEW BRAUNFELS & she says texas is having some awful weather.

We sure have had some awful weather this year. Very bad, and very hot and dry.

It sure was hot out in that field that day. After that, hardly anyone could find any peas for sale. Guess they all burnt up in the hot sun. We have really had a hot summer this year, one of the hottest that i can remember having.

Our weather can have quite a devastating effect on crops... and on the stock market I presume

We lost most of our garden this year. The weather was just too hot and dry. Then the last week, it has done nothing but rain, but we sure did need it, so no one is complaining about the rain.

We only cook our peas until they reach the "done" stage, and then turn them off. Very good peas too.
